Chauchow-chan ( Anime )

Reading how it worked in the anime doesn't really correlate to how it would work in the actual game.

If Yuma decided to use the effect himself, then it still should've destroyed "the attacking monster", his Dododo Gasser, while inflicting damage to the opponent.  Instead he was able to select his opponent's monster for that effect.  (According to the episode synopsis on the wiki).  It doesn't really make much sense in the real game how it was used.

I think it sort one of those things where it works without question it, kind of like Diamond Dude can use cards like Destiny Draw, Wrath of Neos, Ojama Delta Hurricane and etc. without having to making conditions suitable for it which is where this card is likely going to fall under.

Unfortunately, in the TCG, cards that copy Trap Card effects must follow proper activation conditions, especially when many effects wouldn't work without it.

Regardless of that, the attacking monster is still the attacking monster.  That's the effect.
