Periphery

Gospel.

Recommended Posts

I had the pleasure of seeing Periphery, Dead Letter Circus and Memories In Broken Glass in San Antonio last week.

In my opinion, Periphery (Their music) embodies the talent of some of the best musicians around right now...

Plus like, half of their song names are either Arrested Development or Battlestar Galactica references, which is pretty rad.

The painfully soulful vocals ruin what could be great riffs.

I remember really digging their first album and EP, however.

Oh, I don't know.  I mean the vocals aren't really my cup of tea either, but it's all just the style.  And I will say it doesn't quite reach the levels of generic whiny metalcore vocals.  The guy's a proper singer IMO.

As talented as they are, I find them and the whole Djent style to be plain unappealing, it doesn't do much for me.

I think bands like Periphery and Tesseract do a lot to break up the monotony of the genre. In terms of repetitiveness, the whole 'djent' genre, because it revolves around a single guitar tone, begs for variety. For every technical metal band out there who use the same repetitive sweep patterns and chugging riffs, there are bands like Polyphia and Asymmetrical who are doing some pretty fantastic, original shit.

Like I said I just find them to be unappealing, though I'll admit that TesseracT sound like a less annoying and more tolerabe version of Periphery and Make Total Destroy sounds better than most other songs I've heard by them. Who knows maybe Djent might grow onto me, but for now the only Djent band that I consider myself to be a fan of is Meshuggah.
