Thousand-Eyes Restrict, again

Recommended Posts

If you remove Instant Fusion from the cardpool, then Restrict is tentatively okay, due to its Summon Condition requiring more dedication. Metamorphosis was another card that enabled Restrict, but that's already banned for reasons not solely limited to Restrict.

So it sort of comes down to the same logic of Gearfried and Butterfly Dagger. Those cards form a ridiculous combo that's abusable, ignoring all arguments of consistency for the time being. They should not co-exist, but neither is broken on its own.

So which card provides more value to the game? Butterfly Dagger's only contribution besides loop potential is Guardian Elma. Gearfried is a decent beater, has a few support cards and interesting combos. So of the two, Butterfly Dagger is banned because all it has to offer is the abusable combos, whereas Gearfried has more value on its own merits.

Instant Fusion vs Restrict is a gray area even with that logic. Is what Instant Fusion doing of any value? It provides Tribute, Xyz, or Synchro fodder among a very limited number of targets from the Extra Deck, with a 1000 LP cost. Restrict isn't a support for Relinquished, it's just the embodiment of stall, which isn't considered healthy.

You'd have a better argument saying both should be banned, rather than Instant Fusion should be banned so that Restrict can be freed.

Shame Konami doesn't always follow that logic. Chimeratech Overdragon was OTK personified, Overload Fusion was just a Fusion enabler, but they chose to limit the latter. (At the time it also got FF limited, but I don't defend it because FF was always problem design.)

Hitting Chimeratech, short of a ban, wouldn't affect the OTK. Limiting Future Fusion and Overload Fusion would reduce the consistency of it.

Then again, I said from the beginning: Chimeratech/Future Fusion/Overload Fusion were deliberate. They WANTED that to exist. They were released in the same pack, and even the anime used Overdragon as an OTK with Overload Fusion.

Not that it makes it less stupid, but they knew what they were doing when they created those cards.

The issue with "Instant Fusion becomes 141" is Instant Fusion as a 141 is actually way shittier than most of the 141's we have now. Most 141's don't die to so hard to Veiler or any effect negation or any backrow, don't require extra deck dedication, plenty don't even cost you anything, and most of them definitely don't use to stuff like Vanity's. Using TER like that is so incredibly suboptimal and bad that using it as a reasoning for it to stay on the list means we might as well ban Tsukuyomi again, Mask of Darkness is still a card!

Not at all what I meant, but at least you tried.  I mean the exact same card just with a single clause "This card cannot be Summoned by "Instant Fusion".

Incredibly unlikely. If anything they'd go with the "above Fusion Material Monsters" clause. Also, Plasma basically IS nomi TER, except even more nasty with Scapegoat at 3.

Then why not ban Chimeratech? And I could ask the same of FGD, but it's not as bad as Chimeratech by a long shot and does nothing without FF.

It's a fair question, but I don't have an answer to it. Chimeratech was nothing more than an OTK machine, and Overload Fusion was the enabler. Future Fusion's ban at least made you need something more dedicated or later game most of the time to pull off the OTK, but it still was bad design and it still has been argued as deserving a ban.

I simply was answering the question as to why Future Fusion and Overload Fusion got limited, rather than Chimeratech getting hit to 1. The answer, essentially was "You only need 1 Chimeratech to OTK" while noting the OTK combo was deliberate on Konami's part, as stupid as it is.

If TER was somehow remade so it can't be SSed by Instant Fusion, then Instant Fusion is no longer capable of abusing Restrict, and a Deck wanting to spam Restrict would need to devote, at the very least, Relinquished and a Fusion substitute (or Idol and a Fusion Substitute).

I tend to be of the opinion that banned cards should, for the most part, remain banned regardless of whether they'd have any impact in the meta on unbanning. This isn't an absolute, but I don't see any BENEFIT, as a player, or to the game, to having Restrict.
