What is your most and least favorite kind of opponent?

Recommended Posts

I second this^

And solitaire players. Especially bragging solitaire players.

I mean... yes, okay, you won, you're done drawing now, there are your five pieces, okay. Yes, yes it was a really good game and I am impressed. Yes, I know I should be enjoying the game.

Except you made me sit here for half an hour to watch you draw cards.

>assumes solitaire just lies with Exodia

I swear, some players play decks that don't let the opponent move. And when I say this, I mean that they trample upon lower tier decks and still brag about it. The bragging is unbearable. Forgive me and other people for not playing a deck on Tier 0.

>brags at children's card games

So, tell me more about how you have life goals.

I really hate versing people that have to read every single card they are using, and when talking about this situation I'm mainly talking about one person at locals who doesn't net deck and builds his own decks so I don't know why every time I'm paired up against him he seems to have the need to read each card and then also out to me, such as: Mirror Force, MST.

I like versing people who know what they're doing and are willing to explain a card if needed.

People in the anime do this, so I do it as well, it just feels right. Of course, I don't do it with staples, but other funny stuff like Numbers, and wacky stuff like Trap Reactor and stuff.

I don't like people who play Solitaire decks in general. And that extends to quite a few decks.

> Darkworlds

> Exodia

> Burn

> Alternate Victory Conditions

> Infernity

> Gravekeepers to an extent

> Malefic Drain variants

> Herald of Perfection

> Gishki Hand Loop

All of these decks just play with themselves and if your opponent doesn't have the responses they lose. Its so boring its not even funny. What kind of person plays decks that have no interaction at all and simply want to hit a win-button every single game? I realize that there are rare times when you actually have to interact with an opponent, but the rest of the time you are basically saying your opponent isn't allowed to play Yugioh.

I hope the shift towards throwing boss monsters vs. boss monsters will remedy this situation because I really dislike playing against these decks. You could say I am just b****ing because my favourite decks have difficult match-ups against them, but that is not true and not the point either. I have played each of these decks (to learn how they work) and god, its so tedious. The fact that some decks "auto-lose" to these decks is even more unfair in the sense that there is a loss of skill in Yugioh nowadays.

Gone are the days of a single deck (or two) emerging as the superior deck(s) and having the best players take them to victory. Now its all about match-ups, percentages, opening hands, and other statistical odds of calculating victory. Decks like Chain Burn are definitely going to win a game here or there because of their nature, but they are not consistent enough to face-off against a variety of other decks over many rounds and manage to top. The players unfortunate enough to face them may lose their shot at topping because some player decided to ruin several other duelists' day and win a game or two. And of course, you could say that it is a strategic meta call to use such a deck and that the "top" decks could be hurt by them, but then you are not helping the problem and end up going in circles.

Some people might call me stupid, or think that I have a bias against styles of play, and you're right. I don't like decks that only play themselves, and if you play them, I probably won't like playing against you. I am completely fine with that as well because I have my own opinions and likes about the game and feel that there should be more to it than playing by yourself. If you could recall the short format where the Baby Dragon Rulers existed, several decks simply were demolished by it simply because the deck was so obviously powerful. It emerged as the best deck at the time, and the mirror match between the two decks is considered to be one of the most highly skilled Mirror Matches in Yugioh since Goat Control. Sure the deck was too powerful, and some cards needed to be hit to allow for more decks to come into play, but if decks like Chain Burn and Exodia reached this level of power, they would still lack any depth or skill to it at all. Even after posting this argument, I am absolutely sure I will get readers who will make the remark "but X deck vs. X deck has lots of skill". An example of this might include Darkworld Mirrors. If this was considered to be skillful, that would still not rationalize the deck's lack of player interaction when facing various other decks. At least with the Dragon Ruler deck, it won not because it lacked any player interaction, but because it was simply so powerful. That is the difference between them in my eyes.

And so this is why decks like the ones I have listed are not good for the game. If I could share my thoughts in the form that would have an actual impact on the game, I would simply make minor changes to the ban list to ensure that these decks are not played. Konami has made some progress with restricting cards like One Day of Peace, and recently with the banning of Self-Destruction Button, but I feel there is so much more that they should do.

I would be perfectly content if Konami were to do the following:

- Ban Exodia

- Ban Final Countdown

- Ban Reversal Quiz

- Ban Bad Reaction to Simochi

- Ban Nurse Reficule the Fallen One

- Ban Secret Barrel, Just Desserts, Chain Strike

- Ban Ookazi, and other Normal Spell burn cards

- Ban Grapha

- Ban EEV, DDV

- Ban Infernity Archfiend

- Ban Herald of Perfection

- Ban Royal Tribute

- Ban Evigishki Mind Augus

- Ban Cannon Soldier / Toon Cannon Soldier

- Ban Magical Explosion

- Ban Blasting the Ruins

- Ban D.D. Dynamite

- Ban Inferno Tempest

- Ban Chain Material

- Ban Tempest Magician

And I doubt that anyone would really be sad to see them go. Most of these cards promote solitaire-like gameplay and are not fun at all to play against. And you could even say that certain cards provide some form of play that is not exclusive to solitaire decks (Toon Cannon Soldier for example), but they are mostly used with a malicious intent to game the opponent before they can do anything. This is why, it is easier to hit a single card that is abused for the sake of not hitting a huge number of cards in order to keep it around.

I welcome other suggestions of cards you think shouldn't exist because they limit player interaction since there are probably a few that I've missed in Yugioh's huge number of cards and decks that exist.

I wanted to also comment on specific cards including Skill Drain and Royal Tribute. While I dislike them, I'm not exactly sure that their influence on the game warrants a Ban under my given rationality. To be honest, I don't know exactly where they should fit in, so some insight would be greatly appreciated. If I had to make a decision right now, it would be to restrict them both to 1 and see how their respective decks fair against other decks.

Implying that DW have no skill at all is a bit much. Summoning their ace every turn does not mean you can't play Yugioh. Ban Fortress and Garunix with that logic. I have been fighting fair fights against and with DW except when they flip up a virus. The rest of that seems legit. Playing alone? Not being able to play? That's what Backrow heavy decks are. And what most of the game is right now.

The Viruses are crummy, yes.

Grapha, maybe not on its own (though still pretty broken), allows for the solitaire play that is Darkworlds.

Their first turn always consists of playing as many Gates, DWD, Dragged Down, Upstarts, Trade-Ins as possible, only to wait until you draw and flip EEV, DDV, and Mind Crush, essentially winning.

While Grapha may not be the card that makes you auto-scoop, its definitely one of the main cards that allows you to maintain hand advantage while drawing through your deck.

The thing about DWs....
It's the fact you can literally sit on Grapha the whole duel. Like, it's literally what an ideal boss monster should be; Support it's own archetype's shenanigans while still being able to take part in it, without being an Extra Deck monster.
EXCEPT-
It's a bit too much.
I mean, it would be fine if it were more like Birdman, in the sense that it returns stuff from the field, but Banishes itself if it's removed. But, you know, it has the whole Graveyard motif to it, which puts it on the absurd side.

EDIT:

I love the idea of you and your opponent not being to use effects just to win the game. Actual...battling occurs.

Except in this case, Drain is a crutch for you, and all of your battling is meaningless.
If the opponent has a Set monster that's something as obscure as, oh, I don't know, Penguin Soldier, then you should understand the risk of such a thing occurring, on the grounds that Set monsters can be as mind-game oriented as backrows. But with Drain, it completely eliminates that, which is the issue.

ot: I just want to play against good knowledgeable and preferably friendly players playing good and/or meta decks that aren't solitaire decks.

Like the friendly thing isn't even that important, just don't be a git and know what you're doing.

On the other side of the spectrum, I really get annoyed by the kind of guy that responds to "good luck" with ridiculous stuff like "I don't need luck" or "you're the one who needs luck" then proceeds to exodia you without thought of potential responses or just plays a frankly awful deck without knowing how basic cards work.

I can pretty much handle everything in-between, the ragequitters/butthurts/whiners don't faze me at all.

There are namely two kinds of players I hate.

I only know of one person who falls in the first category. He was playing Chain Burn, and to be honest I was a bit disappointed - it being the first duel of the day and I was hoping for something more fun and engaging - and I said so. Then he suddenly got really offended before stating, and I do quote this "Yu-Gi-Oh! Is about making money, don't be such an ass about fun." I dont play for money, I play for fun, and while winning is fun, losing can be if one loses to decent people.

Then there are the guys who get mad when I try to ensure they are playing the game correctly, and instantly jump to titling me a shark. Dude, you are playing your cards wrong, stfu and lets fix this together. -_-

On the other hand, I really like players who A: Know what they are doing - that is, know what combos they are trying to pull without fiddling too much -, who look like they are having fun even when I pull a fast one and crush their combo, and who can just be nice in general on the off-chance I make a mistake or they need some clarification, among other circumstances.

Not justifying Grapha, but getting 101'd is a common occurrence, and can hurt the deck quite significantly. And maybe it's just my bad luck, but I can't keep him on the field for more than a turn or two at most. I have noticed how much he helps the deck, even more than I thought though. Putting a monster in the hand just to be discarded.

much strategy

very wow

On Topic More So Than DW:

I also can't stand the opponent who acts lighthearted and then rages when he loses. Or opens up with "boo Xyz" when I Xyz ONE TIME when he has 60 cards in his deck and no extra deck.

- Ban Grapha - ..Why?

- Ban EEV, DDV - Yes

- Ban Infernity Archfiend - No. If anything it needs to be barrier limited.

- Ban Herald of Perfection - Maybe

- Ban Royal Tribute - Maybe

- Ban Evigishki Mind Augus - Recycling is degenerate now? k. No.

- Ban Cannon Soldier / Toon Cannon Soldier - Yes

- Ban Magical Explosion - Maybe

- Ban Blasting the Ruins - No

- Ban D.D. Dynamite - Yes

- Ban Inferno Tempest - ...Why?

- Ban Chain Material - Yes

- Ban Tempest Magician - Too specific imo. leave it alone

Except that then becomes Grapha's life-line, in addition to actually encouraging an occasional Normal Summon, among Special Summon-spam.
Plus, if you revive a Snoww, use it to revive Grapha, then discard said Snoww right away, you've just used Grapha to search a card from your Deck.

Xyz/Synchro monsters are obviously cheating, because they refuse to take into consideration new mechanics that were introduced into the game throughout the years.

And then I try to tell the guy that Xyz are needed to get around his cards like Gravity Bind. /sarcasm

He then proceeds to list counters to GB. Cool story bro.

Searching a DW from the deck once a turn being bad is like saying Fire Fists are bad for doing the same thing.

They are quite similar, but not exactly.

Searching a DW from the deck once a turn being bad-

I never said it was bad.
I just said it then becomes a means of keeping Grapha on the field, because it encourages you to come up with various ways to keep him on the field, by supplying him with fodder, to which then gives you more stuff to Discard.
Again, the whole issue is that, THAT, is just too good as far as support goes.
