Heheh, I'mma gonna use football instead of... soccer, because we call it football over here, so sue me/shoot me.

I'd say England has got a tough group, they'd be lucky to finish 2nd imo. With Theo Walcott ruled out for the rest of the season due to an injury, England has lost a good player and I hope Roy Hodgson makes a good replacement.

Holy fucking shitballs, a football thread on YCM. Thought I'd never see the day!

Anyways, this is the year of dark horses I feel. The big guns are showing that teams thought to be weaker than them can beat them with some hard work and luck so I think we might see lots of upsets. I'm Bosnian so I have mixed feelings about Bosnia's group - Argentina is obviously a danger and we looked terrible against them in the friendly before the draw.

Sad news though, Walcott got an ACL rupture (I think) against Spurs so he'll be out for up to 6 months. He's gonna miss yet another WC. Shame for the guy, genuinely gutted. By the time the next WC rolls around in 2018, he'll be, what, ~29? ACL Rupture and getting older, I don't know if he'll be as good by then, seeing as he's so reliant on his pace. Here's hoping he has a speedy recovery.

I was honestly really upset about that injury... Hate the Spurs too. My step father is from England and he got me into the sport so ive always been a big England fan. They have a touch group man Italy, Costa Rica, and Uruguay are all phenomenal teams. My picks are Italy and Germany in the final as of now but we will see. Im from the USA though so i really want to see them win their group but i know that's pretty much impossible. Ghana has knocked them out the past 2 world cups. Germany... well lets face it Germany's whole team could get injured and their back up squad could probably sill win the group. Im a big Ozil fan because im a big Arsenal fan but i wouldn't root against my country. But Germany also has Neuer whos a great goal keeper and Mueller who i like as well. Then there is Portugal man Ronaldo is just a beast. Maybe the USA will pull some miracle out of their ass that we can make a movie out of.

Put up by an American too hahaha.

Bosnia still seems like a great team im not discounting that they could win. Most of that group i havent seen play too much. I dont know any players from the team but when ive seen them play they have been enjoyable to watch. They have great pace i will say that.

I'm in England. Frankly we'll be lucky to win a game. (Not that I'm that fussed, have no real empathy to the England football team and only have anything to do with them out of social conveniance). Will only watch games if it's a case of seeing people/hosting.

Nice to see Sepp's Switzerland got an easy draw having been top seeded, again. I wonder how that keeps happening...

The big World Cup event is next year. :D

Really? No mention of Spain? I mean sure their most recent squad isn't amazing but you have to realize that Spain has been one of the biggest forces in National football in the past 10, maybe 20 years and that they're waiting on players like Xavi, Cesc, Pique, Alba, Puyol, Silva, Isco, Costa, Soldado and co. to respond to their callups - which they will. Sure, they're not quite the forces like the Brazil of the 50s and 60s or the Netherlands of the Cruyff era, but still strong favorites to win this WC.

My call is on Germany though. BuLi is dominating the European stage right now and this is in big part to their Germans.

EDIT:

Oh I have no doubts that Bosnia will make the WC. I see people harshly underestimating us against Iran and Nigeria which is absolutely ridiculous considering we nearly had most goals scored in the group stage and we're one of the truest black horses of the competition. Belgium, Chile, Colombia, Bosnia...all are expected to make upsets.

Also, if you follow club football, you'd have possibly stumbled upon some of our better players without knowing it. Begovic, Dzeko, Ibisevic, Pjanic, Salihovic, Spahic, rabble rabble. A lot of pretty big names ATM.

Of course it'll be a huge disappointment if we don't get through but this is Bosnia's first World Cup so we're proud of our boys whatever the outcome. Regarding the pace of our National Team, you can expect the fast counters and lots of short passes. A lot like Arsenal in a sense.

EDIT 2: Algeria >> Nigera. TY Ash.

Spain is definitely a force to be reckon with. I was just talking about the USA and England draws there. Spain is a team that has the potential to be in the finals. I think they will definitely be one of the final 4 in the semis. Im a pretty big Xavi fan as well. Then there is Brazil and Argentina who i think have the potential to go far. And hey maybe Portugal will pull something out and beat Germany XD.

EDIT: OH wow i actually know Dzeko ! hes on Man City? right.

Yup. Short list for Bosnia NT reference:

Dzeko - Man City

Pjanic - Roma

Begovic - Stoke

Spahic - Bayer 04

Salihovic - Hoffenheim

Ibisevic - Stuttgart

Lulic - Lazio

Those are some of the bigger names/guys playing for bigger clubs.

I really can't comprehend how you have Algeria winning a group with Belgium, Russia and Korea in it.

This year could be Argentina's, they have such a strong squad and possibly the best attacking force the game has had for a long time.

I agree, I can definitely see Italy topping the group, it was just a shame that England are in the same group as them tbh, and Walcott's injury doesn't help either.

As a massive football fan, I can't say I'm looking too forward to the World Cup with England's team atm. Should be fun to watch when we get knocked out though, I'm going for a Spain win.

Football overall isn't looking too good for myself atm, being a huge Manchester United fan we've gone completely down the drain.

Ahahahahaha it's just not going well for Moyes is it. Season's interesting now we aren't winning everything though.

I cannot speak much on grounds of the game, but as per usual I'll always be rooting for England despite how unlikely it seems they'll win and, if they're out, Spain.

I do like the influence of the Beautiful Game on culture, however - especially with this year's being held in Brazil. I'm quite excited to see it.

You say that, but with what, 5-6 months to go and next to no stadiums completed, (not to mention workers being killed on site with alarming regularity), a shoddy transport network, and the overshadowing threats being made by some of the gangs, at the minute it's looking somewhere between a shambles and an outright disaster.

Then again these things always do at this stage, and they always seem to pull through when it comes to it. Still...

Don't know about you but I would've preferred that Arsenal never snapped out of the Invincible form and continued steamrolling the PL. This might be our season though haha -- on another note, we need a club football thread.

On topic though, I don't know how strong Argentina really is going into this. My prediction's Germany--Spain--Italy--Brazil. Argentina's cores are really injury prone and haven't done on the national pitch what they do on that of their clubs. Yeah, sure, they have Messi, Aguero, Tevez, Lavezzi and others, but we've seen that they haven't done much together yet. Same could be said for Germany, but their superstars seem to have better chemistry.

The only team that ever really gels come World Cup time is Spain anyway, its why they've steamrolled the world scene for years. And it's why they're favourites again. Individually though, I can't look past Argentina's team because they have so much attacking depth backed by a pretty solid strong defensive unit. They're also playing in their own continent so they haven't got so much of an issue with climatizing like some European teams.

Following from that logic, Brazil have so much going for them that it wouldn't surprise me to see them take it all - playing in their home country is such a boost that it can really motivate them beyond their capabilities (see England '66). They've got a strong squad, they almost always have but these days they are playing well too - like they did when the likes of Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Cafu and Roberto Carlos were taking them to success.

It'll be such a goddamn shame if Brasil drop out early. Like, shit's gonna go haywire.

On paper though, can anybody expect much from their setup? Their's is an amazing squad list, don't get me wrong, but I feel like it's Brasil's weakest in a very long time. Each of the last decades has been marked by amazing squads, starting from even earlier than Pele's era (late 50s, 60s) yet this squad hasn't left the mark the others have.

HUDDLESTONE FOR ENGLAND

/hullcityfanbias

Seriously though, he has been incredible this season so far and if he maintains his form he should make the team on merit.

Pshhhht, I'd take Cleverley over Huddlestone all day long

;D
