Johan Liebert
Alright, so I wanna do a martial art of some sort, I just don't know which one. I live in Indiana, and I know some great places, but they're mostly karate. Anyway, my top three are Taekwondo, Jujitsu, and Aikido. I've read a bit about each of them and a few more different martial arts, but these three clicked. So, discuss martial arts and which ones I should do/you do. Bahamut - Envoy of the End
http://forum.yugiohcardmaker.net/topic/310861-mmaor-really-fight-sports-in-general-boxing-kickboxing-muy-thai-brazilian-jiu-jitsu-ncaa-wrestleing-ect/ See here. Anyway, I might as well repeat what I've already said about the three you mentioned: Aikido is very traditional and beautiful and all that kind of stuff as an art form and might well be effective as a self-defence if mastered, but that will take a lot of dedication I think and some aspects of it and the teaching of it might be hard to put up with. Taekwondo is great for fitness and social aspect, but is awful as a way of defending yourself against attack. The best for that is probably Jujitsu from the three. Depends what you want. Aix
I like how Batman is a tag here. OT: I heard somewhere that judo was the most functional martial art though, but I know little about martial arts.
Admiral Tim
I can't speak of other arts, but personally I take Muay Thai, it's a powerful art that is very useful in real combat situations. It is full contact and is considered one of the best striking arts in the world.
Flash Flyer - Sakura
Aikido is good if you want to use the opponent's force against them to place them into a submission hold and/or throw them, while not using too much of your own energy. You should know how to do basic forward/back rolls and fall properly, however (in a way similar to judo, but without grappling). Just keep in mind that a lot of the techniques come from the sword. Taekwondo is mostly kicks from what I remember; most of them are to the face. If you can kick to the face w/out ripping muscles, great, but just note that you will be easier for an opponent to sweep to the ground (due to balance). Jujitsu is for ground combat from what I know; that's about it. This may be the best option for when someone tries to mug you in broad daylight, but I can't say for certain. --- In my case though, I'm currently taking karate (which I hold an advanced rank in), but it's augmented with some degree of aikido due to having weekly classes from an qualified instructor. The cross training helps because we are taught how to do leg sweeps, so if we do get swept to the ground, we're able to fall correctly and have different ways of evading attacks, instead of just blocking it and hitting back with force. Contrary to what some people say karate is, it's not breaking boards [I'm certainly not taught how to do that] and it's not just beating the stuffing out of everyone. Granted at the higher ranks, you are taught techniques that can cause severe and/or fatal injuries (I'll admit this here and now), but don't worry about this until you master the basics. --- But to sum up everything, it's up to you what you want to take (and how your body works). I don't advise choosing an art that you'll end up getting seriously injured. Just find something that'll teach you how to defend yourself in real life and hopefully learn something that'll aid you in life.
