Let have a serious discussion [Upstart Goblin]

Recommended Posts

These things are 5-10 common and I'm glad I had a playset lying around.

Running it while Soul Charge is at 3 is something I'm still debating. Cybers get big beaters out of nowhere but 4-5k LP is all you need. Duality is for early and this is for late game imo.

Life Points are again a material part of the game the way they were in Goat Format, solely because of Soul Charge. No longer are the typical competitive cut-offs of 2000 and 800 the only cut-off points you need to keep track of. Upstart just got pretty bad unless you can vomit damage on the board to mitigate the gain.

So.... Now everyone copying following Hoban can jump off that bandwagon?

Regardless, though, while the 37 card deck is nice and all, each copy gives the opponent another revive with Charge, and that by itself is a bit of an issue.
Or at least, for as long as Charge is still at 3, given the fact that it became such a deciding factor out of nowhere.

idgaf if you're running Soul Charge or not, because even if you aren't running Upstarts, its not going to stop your opponent paying 2000-3000 Life Points and taking the game from there, so you might as well run a 37-card deck to draw into your answers much faster.

Besides, when you go to game 2, you most likely side them out for more answers anyway.

Never really understood why people jumped on the Hoban train when most cards in your deck, usually within some sort of archetype, thin themselves out based on effects alone. On top of that, you've got Foolish, ODoP, and (usually) your Spell tutors. And Duality exists.

The only time I ever tried to run Upstart was in Gadgets, and that was back when Gadgets had the Offering OTK. I didn't really like it at all, especially when it gave your opponents a free Solemn Warning to begin with.

This allows you to draw into your archetype searchers faster. Also, don't mention Foolish or One Day of Peace because they're limited and they serve different purposes. Also, as stated before, Duality makes you not be able to Special Summon and can only be activated once per turn when Upstart does not have any of those limitations.

Eh. Depends on who you talk to and what you're playing. Which is part of the problem, because the whole idea of "Upstart being good in everything" is preposterous 100% of the time.

Yeah, they serve somewhat different purposes, but that doesn't mean that they don't share similar traits and don't do similar things at the end of the day.
