Let's make a Yu-Gi-Oh! version of the Elder Dragon Highlander format!

Rules:
1. Your deck must have the maximum of 60 cards.
2. You can only have 1 copy of each card in your Deck.
3. Traditional rules apply for deck construction.
4. Everyone starts out with 20000 LP each.
5. At the start of the duel, each player selects a monster from their Deck to be their Commander, and place it in their Command Zone, a Zone to the right of the Deck (Dueling Network players can place their Commander in their Banished Zone instead, and it is not counted as being banished.)
6. Decks and Extra Decks can only contain monsters that are of the same Type and/or Attribute as the Commander (i.e., if the Commander is Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon, the Deck and Extra Deck can only have LIGHT monsters of any Type and Dragon-Type monsters of any Attribute). Therefore, DIVINE monsters cannot be Commanders, but any effect inherent to the monster that make it have a different Attribute or Type at the same time as its normal Attribute and Type (i.e., Light and Darkness Dragon) counts for deck construction.
7. The Commander can be Command Summoned from the Command Zone onto the field by Tributing a number of monsters needed to Tribute Summon the monster normally +1, with the monsters being of the same Type and Attribute as the Commander, and ignoring the Summoning conditions normally listed on the Commander.
8. You can only Command Summon once per turn, and it counts as a Special Summon.
Commanders cannot be used as Synchro, Xyz, or Fusion Material Monsters, and cannot be Tributed.
9. If a Commander leaves the field, it is returned to the Command Zone, but is treated as going to the location on the field it was supposed to go.
10. If a Commander deals Battle Damage to a player, place 1 Shame Counter on that player's Commander for each multiple of 500 damage done to that player.
11. Shame Counters cannot be removed by any card effect, and stay on the Commander, no matter where the Commander is.
12. If a player has more than 20 Shame Counters on their Commander, they automatically lose.
13. For more than 2 players, any player is treated as an opponent. Effects affecting more than 1 player affect all players.

Discuss.

I really want to see how this might work, considering how it completely warps a TON of different decks.
Unlike M:tG, we don't have regular reprints and remakes, simply knockoffs of existing cards that have been banned or limited.
I had to make this a Traditional analogue simply because of the 1 copy rule.
Do you think the Shame Counters are a good analogue of the "deals 21 damage, you win" mechanic?

I really can't get behind this idea because the game is fundamentally different from Magic. Color identity doesn't exist to the extent it does in Magic, yet at the same time it's also much broader, instantly skewing this towards Types that can toolbox and use the Extra in-Type; see Dragons and Warriors.

Generic and strong Type support would need a hit. Things like Trade-In, Consonance, Dealings, Creeping Darkness, Recurring Nightmare etc. are too strong of recycling/advantage engines even at lower counts as they're power cards in an inconsistent format. If you got a big enough playerbase to test this out, sure, you'd be able to start identifying problem cards but it's a big task without very extensive playtesting.

Limiting to Attribute might fix some of the problems of Type advantage. But then you have the problem of certain archetypes being too powerful even if not consistent, and you still have the issue of Type in some cases, since for example most Fiends are DARK, Fairies/Heralds are LIGHT, Beast-Warriors are FIRE or EARTH, Hieratics are all LIGHT and so on. Generic advantage cards are also somewhat degenerate, and generic mill cards are also equally problematic.

I thought having the broader spectrum would appease both decks that have Attribute diversity over a single Type (HEROs, most Dragons, Spellcasters) as well as Type diversity over a single Attribute (Photons, Bujins, Ghostricks). That's the best translation that I had for the color restriction.

By that token, having Doraido as your Commander means you can play any monster that isn't DARK or DIVINE, because her effect treats her as 5 Attributes.

But all of this is experimental, and is subject to modification.

On that note, should the "Commander returns to the Command Zone no matter how they were sent" clause be changed, as well as the "Commander can't be used for any Tributes or Summoning" rule?

What about monsters with specific summoning conditions as commanders? E.G. Judgement Dragon.

Are those allowed or does it have to be a tribute summonable monster?

Like I said earlier, they can be Command Summoned, ignoring their regular Summoning conditions, by Tributing the number of monsters needed to Tribute Summon them +1, and those Tribute must be the same Type and/or Attribute as the Commander. So, for Judgment Dragon, he can be Command Summoned using 3 LIGHTs, 3 Dragons, or any combination of the two.

Ah ok, I must have missed the part about ignoring summoning conditions, my bad.

So, like, how does it work for a nomi like, say, DAD, then. Do you pretend it can be tribute summoned and use 2 darks/dragons, then? or is it based on the summoning conditions

EDIT: i think i get it. IF they could be tribute summoned, you work with what it WOULD be, correct?

Yes. You ignore the Summoning conditions on the card, and Command Summon them based on how they WOULD be Normal Summoned if they could be Normal Summoned, adding an extra Tribute and including those restrictions on the Tributes.

  • 4 weeks later...

ScapeGoats for days. Since it's a Special Summon, they can be used for the Command Tributes. See: D-Hero Plasma

Scapegoat on EP, Sac 3 for Commander

Or 58 cards to Search/Dig for Cyber Stein, an Extra with 3 LIGHT Fusion beatsticks (All the Dark Fusions of sufficient strength are out of Steins range), Cyber Stein, and LADD as Commander.
