Topic of the Day: Party Games

Super Smash Brothers, with items (according to some) would go in the Examples Section.

=D

I believe there is still soil involved, just a different kind of skill. Primary skill involved? Adaptation, and learning/predicting the random stuff after a while.

Skill shouldn't be thrown out the window but when skill is too heavily involved it stops being fun for some. So, a laid back still playing the game smartly kind of playing.

I don't think skill matters in party games, because the point of those games is anyone can just go in and play with anyone and have a chance. However, any multiplayer game you compete in can be considered a party game, if the skill-level of the players are about even.

And TGM, even with items Smash can be more competitive than party in my opinion. Seeing as you still need to know how to use the items and be able to get to them first while avoiding getting hit by other players.

Adaptation is a good skill, but there are games that it doesn't matter, where even if you adapt perfectly you won't be able to do anything.

The biggest thing that makes the difference between party and competitive is the players and the mind-set. A competitive game can be a party one if everyone is laid-back and about equal in skill.

And a party game can become competitive if they players all really know what they are doing and get really into it trying to win.

So...skill shouldn't be thrown out the window exactly. What makes a party game a great one, is the players themselves and their attitude, more than the game itself.

A great party game simply needs to be a game that a bunch of people can play together and all have a chance at winning and enjoying.

....I don't think that made sense, oh well.

The skill in Mario Party is whoever picks Yoshi first because every game I play that damn dinosaur wins. It actually happened so much me and my friends banned Yoshi.

But yeah Mario Party is the perfect example because you can go in not knowing anything about the map or the games and still have fun and even win.

I think that it is better to throw skill out for party games.

This is because, basically, games like Mario Party make things fair for everyone, and everyone gets roughly the same chances of winning or losing. But when playing skill-based games (fighting, shooter, etc.), people who are not familiar with it may get frustrated and/or not enjoy it when they are continuously defeated by those who know how to play.

Needless to say, skill-based games should be an option in parties where most players, if not everyone, know how to play them.

Here in Indonesia, the only acceptable party game is FIFA. Or PES, if you want your friend to laugh at you. As you know, FIFA is a game based entirely on skill and nothing else, but we still have a lot of fun with them. Usually the fun comes from shouting rude words when your opponent steals the ball, but it's fun nevertheless.

If you somehow got 16 computers, a stable LAN connecting them all together, then we go play Counter Strike. Usually 1.6. Again, a game based entirely on skill. This time, the fun comes from using rude words as your display name, so you get stuff like "Penis has killed Asshole" or something like that.

As a side note, my favorite party game of all time is Tekken 6. Mostly because I'm literally the best player in my school. So I like to just invite my friends who also play Tekken and proceed to kick their ass for several hours. But, there's no friendship broken and we all have jolly good fun.

Maybe priorities on party games differ with the culture? Just food for thought.
