Thar
Sanity (from Latin: sānitās) refers to the soundness, rationality and healthiness of the human mind, as opposed to insanity. A person is not considered sane anymore just if he/she is rational. In modern society, the terms have become exclusively synonymous with compos mentis (Latin: compos, having mastery of, and mentis, mind), in contrast with non compos mentis, or insane, meaning troubled conscience. A sane mind is nowadays considered healthy both from its analytical -once called rational- and emotional aspects.[1] It's often questioned here, which I see no reason for. In a way, we're all sane for our own reasons. We haven't done nothing to be considered otherwise, so why should be be considered the opposite? Discuss. Thar
Because people typically fear what they don't understand. I shit you not, but that is a lyric written by a Death Metal band that holds one of the most controversial music videos of all time. Word for word. There's a reason why you're my senpai. A minor reason is because of what you underlined. But the truth is obvious. People hate what they don't understand because they're ignorant. However, if ignorance gives them the will to pursue their lives, then let them. Leave progress to those who want to progress in their own way. We're not one to judge how a certain people progress. I'm fine with letting people progress through their own ignorance when it comes to things like thinking BBC Sherlock is a better show than Elementary or that the Beatles are actually good, but I'm not really down with just letting people be when it comes to ignorance of things like race, sexuality, gender, or mental/physical health

LordCowCowCowCowCowCowCowCow
Its overrated. Conversation ended, No, it is not overrated. Actual insanity is a really not good thing and can harm a person greatly. I don't think it should be taken so lightly. However it also shouldn't be looked at as a thing that makes someone a bad person. It needs to be understood more. And people really, really, really need to stop labeling themselves and others as insane without any actual basis.
goddamnit names are a pain
Sanity? Never heard of the guy. Quite an interesting definition, though. I think having mastery of our mind is actually…more rare than it sounds. Or at the very least, is something one must work for. You truly must know yourself (hue) to know your mind. " A sane mind is nowadays considered healthy both from its analytical -once called rational- and emotional aspects" That sounds quite odd. Is someone lacking emotionally (entirely or partially) insane, then?
LordCowCowCowCowCowCowCowCow
That sounds quite odd. Is someone lacking emotionally (entirely or partially) insane, then? In some cases, yes. Remember insanity is a bit of a broad term. Not being able to feel empathy for instance can be considered a form of insanity. Which again, is why we need to examine the idea as a whole much closer. goddamnit names are a pain
At the same time, "rationality" is a very interpretive thing to judge someone sanity on.
Cierfrost
Because I literally hear voices that are not there and aren't a part of my imagination. Because I frequently have waking nightmares. Because I can not understand many simple things people experience. Because I cannot control my reactions that when my home changes, I feel like and have, screamed for hours on end. Absolutely incapable of doing anything about it. Because whenever I want to leave my house, I hear loud screams that leave me on my knees. Because when I see something wrong, my response isn't to talk it out, it's to want to eviscerate the person. Because without my medication I'd be a drooling zombie in some padded room. You all talk like it's overrated and something that people should just move past. But let me tell you something, having your sanity is one of the greatest things you can keep. Its not subjective or something to dwell on. It's something you want to keep a firm grasp on because the alternative is utterly terrifying and it only gets worse.
Spinny
Its overrated. Conversation ended, i said this as a joke BTW....At the same time, "rationality" is a very interpretive thing to judge someone sanity on. indeed because I know a lot of people that don't make a lot of rational choices but I don't view them as insane.
