Survival vs. Morality

Thar

Recommended Posts

Let's be real here; if you were put up against the last living being of a certain species that could kill you if you didn't kill it first, would you kill it to save your ass, or would you let it kill you so that it didn't become extinct?

You can answer that limiting question if you want, but in general: Are you willing to survive for your own good or are you willing to give others a chance for theirs?

Discuss.

Depends. Does it want me dead? Is it female? If not, does it reproduce asexually?

If yes to the first, yes.

If yes to either of the second two, and no to the first, no.

Alright, then, let's say there was one other of its species of  the opposite sex.

Honestly I think in the heat of the moment, if it was actually trying to kill you, then you would defend yourself and try to kill it instinctively. Every member of every species has the instinct to survive and you wouldn't even think about morality when it comes down to it.

My thoughts exactly. Now let's get human here:

If someone were to approach me in a threatening way, to which I'd have a competent advantage, I'd strike him with every muscle I've got. I really don't care what his story is; his ass ain't sheet to what he has me cornered with. My story is here and now, and his is just a crutch to mine.

Preservation of endangered species is a just about complete non-factor in my moral decisions. Also, a single mating pair cannot revive a species which basically disproves Adam and Eve.

A more interesting question is if you were to choose between your life and the life of a bunch of other people, which would you choose?

I was also thinking this when making the thread, but it came out differently. But yes, this would be a much more complicated answer.

Honestly, it depends on the number of people we're talking about and what they mean to me. If it's my family, I'd gladly give my life for them. If it's like a couple dozen strangers that I've never met, then I really don't care. If it were THOUSANDS of strangers (let's say their city was threatened to be bombed or something), that really depends on the killer; can you trust them? Cause even if you make the right choice, there's a chance they might kill them anyway. People can be bastards that way.

I'd defend myself. If people are going to admonish me for protecting my life that they see is lesser than this particular animal, then screw them.

For other people, I would want to say I would, depending on the situation. But I also feel like it's possible I'd crack under the heat of the moment and save myself. I'm just not sure.

If they're strangers, they'd never know the difference if I were dead, so I'd chose my life without a second's thought.

People I know, depends on circumstances then, doesn't it?
