Cards that summon themselves from the deck

Recommended Posts

What are YCM's thoughts on cards which summon themselves directly from the deck like the Familiar Possessed and the never used Red Eyes Metal. They allow for a look through your deck if you meet the summoning requirement, but are usually underwhelming in terms of effects or summoning conditions (or in Red Eyes Metal both, who really runs Metalmorph in a Red Eyes deck for slightly stronger Red Eyes.)

It actually depends more on the context of what the card is.

Possessed Hiita

You need an otherwise gimmicky monster that you would otherwise waste the effect of, and another monster of the matching Attribute, in order to Summon something with 1850 from the Hand/Deck. You basically use 2 monsters to Summon another monster.... Just for piercing damage. Or, you know, you could just Summon Possessed Hiita, and not give a sheet about the piercing damage, as it hardly makes a dfference/It has more synergy with it's matching cards then the Charmers themselves do. Which is why Unpossessed gives your attacking Possessed monsters 800, regardless of how they were played, since they know full well you will just straight-up Summon them without the gimmicky method because you are then attacking with a 2650 monster.

Red-Eyes Metal

Red-Eyes Dragon has a few cards that easily put it into play, sure. Red-Eyes Metal itself has 0 synergy with the Deck, and wants to be in the Deck; Searching it is pointless. Metalmorph itself is typically unsearchable(you honestly wont bother using Cat of Ill Omen), and on the slow side because it's a Trap. So you are using an inconsistent Trap to Summon a monster that can't be Summoned from anywhere, except in the Deck, and becomes a wasted card on the off chance you draw into it; They force luck to be the decding factor on this card. And what do you get? A monster with 400 more ATK and does absolutely nothing else? I know right?

tl;dr: Monsters that Summon themselves from the Deck are "safe", as long as they are basically useless/gimmicky as funk.

Gladiator beasts were a nice way of doing this. They had a cost (your glad beast attacked or was attacked and survived) and the monsters had decent effects.

Not really what I was talking about as Gladiator Beasts activate in the field rather than have an effect from the deck.

Anyway how powerful an effect for an easy self summon from the deck could a card have is another thing I've been wondering and what could the easiest condition be. Familiar Possessed Dharc has got the standard piercing bonus but then has an extra effect, with Charmer Dharc going after a pretty common type so he is one of the easiest to get out.

The only example I can really think of is Theinen the Great Sphinx. It would be nice to see more cards that have this sort of effect. Although without the proper conditions, this could be abused af. I can see why it's not really a thing among small common cards.
