The_robotwithhumanhair
Ever since I was a kid I have been as I put it, a horror fiend. Anything dark, creepy, or bloody is what I love. I am a creature of the night, often only sleeping two or three hours. Most of these nocturnal hours are spent watching horror movies, or reading horror novels. But as I get older I am realizing that horror is dead. All horror is now is ghost movies(dont get me wrong I love every little niche of horror but I hate saturation). Not only that, they are often terrible, relying on cheep pop up scares. *sigh* I hope one day horror gets a blood transfusion
Scarecrow
It's a shame indeed. The horror movie genre has been saturated to the brim with ghost movies, but as a whole all be it a movie, a game, or what have you, there's a sickening ammount of reliance on jumpscares of all kinds. Take it from someone who knows, a jumpscare is not true horror, for the mind is not being scared. It's being startled.Startling someone is easy, but actually making them afraid is an art in and of itself. To truly scare them you need to get under their skin, make the audience feel unsafe, and as it stands right now very few understand that. Comparing it to a blood transfusion may be a bit extreme, but I agree with you that horror as a genre needs a radical switch if it's gonna survive. Susie
While I do think that there are some decent modern horror films the majority of the genre is dead. Atmosphere is much more frightening than jumpscares. Well never films as great as Eraserhead, The Shining, The Thing or The Silence of the Lambs. Also the amount of terrible remakes is annoying. The Nyx Avatar
A good horror movie can use jumpscares, but when they do, they do it effectively rather than sheet fake-outs and loud noises. But of course, atmosphere is key. And most good horror movies don't have characters that you hate and wait to have killed off. As for remakes, who else remembers those god awful Halloween remakes?
