So you want to splice the Pokemons?

Some what I feel are very valuable tips:

  • PrtSc a zoomed canvas onto IMGUR will save it as a PNG and gives a crisper image instead of resizing it from the regular sprite.
  • The COLOR 2 on MSPaint can be accessed by right clicking. This can potentially save you minutes or even hours of clicking back and forth.
  • A single feature like bumps, feathers, and textures can often be scratched to produce better results.
  • Don't be afraid to separate a sprite into its individual components, no matter how dull it may seem. This will often give you a better workflow and coax ideas out of you more by having it spread out.
  • Always and I mean always, have multiple instances of the sprites you're using on your canvas to reference from. If using a program with layering this will be less of an issue.
  • Having multiple modified/cut references of the same sprite will help create a better work environment when conceptualizing and putting the pieces together.
  • If you do not have enough shading to make it look appropriate, find the original and create your own off that. Or use another pokemon with the texture you need as a reference and base the shading texture off of that.
  • In Pixel Art, shading and texturing are the same thing. If you mess up one, the appearance will be off. Take your time.

And most important of all; Less is more with pixel art. The difference between taking the time to add or subtract a couple of extra pixels can make or break a piece.

I'm sure I might have missed some, in fact I more than likely missed a lot. But that's off the top of my head.
