So, there's a lot of complex science behind all of this that I don't understand.

Essentially, what's going on as far as I can tell, is that they've made a nanomaterial that can be surgically applied to damage spinal cords/nervous systems to repair damage. In the test done, a rat's spinal cord was completely severed and then repaired using the nanomaterial. After only 24 hours, the rat began to show signs of electrical connection between the brain and body. After two weeks of recovery, the rat showed a restoration of 90 percent of their motor abilities, and then bump it up to 95 percent after 3 weeks. This is compared to previous experiments with similar nanomaterials in the past that only showed a 10 percent restoration in motor ability after four weeks.

Once this method and material are developed more and approved for public practice on humans (after more testing, of course), we could be looking at medical methods that can allow paraplegics and quadriplegics to walk again. This is a pretty big step for medical science, so to speak*.

Oh, and just to add in a little bit, the guy that headed this project is a graduate from a local university of mine.

*pun most certainly and definitely intended.

Following advancements in medicine and reparation, it can potentially be used for improvement of human anatomy, strengthening bone structure, creating more spatially-robust mechanical implants, etc. A step towards deliberate evolution the species so desperately needs.

When I think of so many Sci-fi series and what they say the future might look like, especially in this case something like Deus Ex, their picture is something closer to really high-tech prosthetics and technology integrated in human beings. In this case, though, this takes the idea of "augmentation" and brings it beyond simply tech implanted in our bodies and turns it into overall improvements over the human body. If this advancement is as good as it seems it will be, then the idea of needing external machines to fix paralysis will actually be just an obsolete concept. It's actually kind of amazing how our science can progress in areas that we didn't imagine they could in this time frame.

If we can use nanotechnology to study the brain as well, not even necessarily augment it, just observe it at a better angle, we might get closer to solving ASI development, at least at the hardware level.

~WE CAN REBUILD THEM! WE CAN MAKE THEM STRONGER, FASTER, SMARTER~

but really, this seems like a really massive step in favor of cyber enhancement. repairing spines would save lives, and even prevent lives from being ruined by such things as vehicle accidents and other such incidents. hell, there's a ton of ways they can take this that'll be fun to watch.
