Contenders V.S. Dark Horses: Make Tokens Viable Again! Written

This archetype is based on pairs of famous historical dark horse (or underdogs) and their adversaries who made them famous.

thanks in advance for the C+C!

[spoiler= inspiration]

the idea for this archetype came to me while I was designing Dark Horse Shepard David. i wanted its effect to have to deal with the Scapegoat and Stray Lamb cards, and thats when it hit me. Why not make an archetype with token monsters as its back bone. Both Contender and Dark Horse utilize token monsters for their effects, however they utilize them in different ways. Contender monsters are used to bring out tokens and then they can tribute them to activate their effects. On the other hand Dark Horse monsters punish your opponent for the destruction of tokens.

[spoiler= Dark Horse monsters]

Dark Horse Shepard David

Earth - Level 4 - Warrior/Effect - 2100/1200
This card can only be normal summoned by tributing 3 level 8 or higher monsters. This card can only be special summoned by banishing 1 "Contender Goliath" from your field or graveyard. This card cannot be destroyed by battle and is unaffected by level 5 or higher monsters. Before the damage step, if this card is battling a level 5 or higher monster, destroy it before damage calculations. If a token is destroyed you gain 1000 life points. During your End phase, target as many monsters on your opponent's side of the field as face up token monsters, shuffle the targeted monsters into your opponents deck.

Our field reseter, helps clear the field of any set traps or spells. He also combos well with Dark Horse General Maximus since he can even clear tokens summoned to your opponent's side of the field.

Dark Horse Waring King Leonidas

Earth - Level 3 - Warrior/Effect - 2700/800

This card can only be normal summoned by tributing 3 level 8 or higher monsters. This card can only be special summoned by banishing 1 "Contender Xerxes" from your field or graveyard. This card cannot be destroyed by battle and is unaffected by level 5 or higher monsters. Before the damage step, if this card is battling a level 5 or higher monster, destroy it before damage calculations. If a token monster is destroyed by battle, add 1"Dark Horse" or "Contender" Spell/Trap to your hand. This card gains 300 attack for every token monster on the field.

Our Spell/Trap searcher, he's really helpful in searching out Legendary Dark Horse Tale, which can help bring back destroyed Contender or Dark Horse monsters, or Contender's regime, which can help special summon other Dark Horse monsters.

Dark Horse General Maximus

Earth - Level 1 - Warrior/Effect - 3000/2500

This card can only be normal summoned by tributing 3 level 8 or higher monsters. This card can only be special summoned by banishing 1 "Contender Comodus" from your field or graveyard. This card cannot be destroyed by battle and is unaffected by level 5 or higher monsters. Before the damage step, if this card is battling a level 5 or higher monster, destroy it before damage calculations. If a Token monster leaves the field, banish the top card on your opponent's deck.

The Main boss for the archetype, He can really mess with your opponent with his ability to banish the top card on the deck. He combos well with Dark Horse Shepard David and pretty much any Contender monsters since their effects deal with removing cards from the field and tributing tokens.

Dark Horse Paladin Roland

Earth - Level 3 - Warrior/Effect - 2500/1000

This card can only be normal summoned by tributing 3 level 8 or higher monsters. This card can only be special summoned by banishing 1 "Contender's Reigme" from your field or graveyard. This card cannot be destroyed by battle and is unaffected by level 5 or higher monsters. Before the damage step, if this card is battling a level 5 or higher monster, destroy it before damage calculations. If a Token monster is destroyed by one of your opponent's monster, destroy that monster. If a face up Token monster is on the field, you can activate "Dark Horse" or "Contender" trap cards without having to set them first, you can only use this effect once per turn.

Part of the sub Contender's Regime Dark Horse archetype, this card deals with revenge destruction just like roland did in real life, he also comes with the added effect of being able to turn traps into spells.

Dark Horse Samurai Takamori

Earth - Level 4 - Warrior/Effect - 2300/1900

This card can only be normal summoned by tributing 3 level 8 or higher monsters. This card can only be special summoned by banishing 1 "Contender's Regime" from your field or graveyard. This card cannot be destroyed by battle and is unaffected by level 5 or higher monsters. Before the damage step, if this card is battling a level 5 or higher monster, destroy it before damage calculations. If a token is destroyed your opponent loses 800 life points. During your standby phase, target as many monsters on your opponent's side of the field as face up token monsters, half the attack and defense of the targeted monsters until the end phase.

More of a defensive monster really, with his ability to halve monster's ATK plus the added bonus of dealing damage to your opponent whenever they think its a good idea to destroy one of your tokens.

[spoiler=Contender monsters]

Contender Goliath

Earth - Level 8 - Warrior/Effect - 1700/1000

This card can be normal summoned without tributes. You can only have 1 "Contender" on the field at a time. When this card is normal or special summoned, special summon 2 "Dark Horse" tokens (Warrior-type/EARTH/Level 1/ATK0/DEF0) in attack position. These tokens cannot be use for a tribute summon or be tributes to activate an effect except for "Dark Horse" or "Contender" cards. This card cannot be destroyed by battle and is unaffected by level 5 or lower monsters. Before the damage step, if this card is battling a level 5 or lower monster, destroy it before damage calculations. When this card is sent from the field to the graveyard, add 1 "Dark Horse" card from your deck to your hand.

Our main searcher. When you summon Dark Horse Shepard David you can activate Contender Goliath's effect and search out Dark Horse Paladin Roland or Dark Horse Samurai Takamori if you have a Contender's regime so that you can summon multiple Dark Horse in a turn.

Contender Xerxes

Earth - Level 6 - Warrior/Effect - 1700/1000

Once per turn, if this card destroys one of your opponent's monsters, immediately tribute 1 token monster, destroy 1 Spell/Trap card on the field. if you cannot, destroy this card.

Spell/Trap destroyer, if you combo him with Dark Horse Samurai Takamori you can potentially deal 2500 damage to your opponent each turn, not to mention the fact you can easily banish cards if you combo him with Dark Horse General Maximus.

Contender Comodus

Earth - Level 7 - Warrior/Effect - 1300/1500

This card can be normal summoned without tributes. You can only have 1 "Contender" on the field at a time. Before the damage step, if this card is battling a level 5 or lower monster, destroy it before damage calculations. During your End phase you can tribute up to 2 face up Token monsters, your opponent must discard the same number of cards from their hand as tokens that were tribute.

this card can end up combing really well with Dark Horse Shepard David and its ability to return cards to your opponent's hand. imagine sending your opponent's cards to their hand only to have them be discarded.

David, Prophet King of God

Light - Level 10 - Spellcaster/Effect - 3500/3000

This card cannot be normal summoned or set, this card can only be special summoned by Banishing 1 "Dark Horse Shepard David" and cannot be special summoned by any other methods. When this card is summoned, special summon as many "Dark Horse" tokens (Warrior-type/EARTH/Level 1/ATK0/DEF0)  in attack position as possible on both sides of the field. These tokens cannot be use for a tribute summon or be tributes to activate an effect except for "Dark Horse" or "Contender" cards. This card can attack for as many times as there are token monsters on the field. Any battle damage your opponent would receive involving a token monster is 0. When a Token monster leaves the field your opponent loses 500 life points. This card is unaffected by card effects.

The boss of the deck,  his ability can help crowd your opponent's field so that they can't summon any monsters to take out David, Prophet King of God. plus then he can attack potentially 5+ times and all the while providing protection for you from any battle damage involving tokens.

Legend Author

Earth - Level 4 - Spellcaster/Effect - 500/1700

Once per turn, if a "Dark Horse" or "Contender" card is summoned, you can set 1  "Dark Horse" or "Contender" Spell/Trap card directly from your deck.

A nice little spell/trap searcher, helps protect contender monsters by setting cards like Contender's training regimen.

[spoiler=Spells]

Legendary Dark Horse Tale

You cannot special summon the turn this effect is used. You can only control 1 face up "Legendary Dark Horse Tale".

another search card, it can help look for certain Dark Horses if you have the corresponding Contender monster or even visa versa!

Legendary Battle Field

Field

Warrior-type monsters cannot be destroyed by battle. All "Dark Horse" and "Contender" monsters gain 100 ATK. When this card leaves the field, special summon 1 "Dark Horse" (token Warrior-type/EARTH/Level 1/ATK0/DEF0)  in attack position. These tokens cannot be use for a tribute summon or be tributes to activate an effect except for "Dark Horse" or "Contender" cards.

The ultimate battle ground, now your monsters can't be destroyed by any monsters and you get a free token if your opponent decides to destroy the field spell.

Contender's regime

[spoiler= Traps]

 Contender's training regimen

Quick Play

If a Contender monster is targeted for an attack or attacks , it gains ATK points equal to half the DEF of your opponent's monster.

basically a poor man's trap version of honest. But, with the added benefit of being able to activate it like a spell if Dark Horse Paladin Roland is on the field.

 Pinpoint Accuracy

Normal

This card can only be activated if a "Dark Horse" monster is face up on the field, destroy 2 Spell/Trap cards. This card's effect cannot be negated and cannot be chained.

With Dark Horse Shepard David being the mascot of the archetype, i needed to give him a signature Spell or Trap card. I thought about making it destroy a monster instead of 2 Spell/Trap cards but with the fire power already in the archetype and the lack of Spell/Trap destroyers I thought this idea would be better.

Indentured Servitude

Quick Play

This card can only be activated if a "Contender" monster is face up on the field. When your opponent's monster declares an attack, destroy that monster. If you do special summon as many "Dark Horse" tokens (Warrior-type/EARTH/Level 1/ATK0/DEF0) in attack position on your side of the field as possible. These tokens cannot be use for a tribute summon or be tributes to activate an effect except for "Dark Horse" or "Contender" cards. this card's effect can only be used once per turn.

with the main idea behind Contender monsters being rulers or regimes known for not being "the peoples favorite" (for lack of a better phrase) i also wanted to create a card that would take an opponent's monster and, like the name suggests, put it to work for you in the form of new tokens.
