This thread should of been an obvious thread after I changed my name to a Tales Of character name, either way this is a thread dedicated to the marvelous game series known as Tales Of. This series includes and is not limited to titles such as "Tales of Eternia", "Tales of Phantasia", "Tales of Symphonia", "Tales of Legendia", "Tales of the Abyss", "Tales of Destiny", "Tales of Vesperia", and many more.

Dude my fave is Tales of Phantasia on the GBA, but the only ones I really have played are Phantasia, Symphonia, and Eternia (I don't own it, I just play it on my friend's PSP). I would play Abyss or Legendia, but I don't have a PS2. I also reserved Tales of Vesperia last Monday, and I hear is you reserve it you get the OST, then again I'm not sure.

I have never played any Tales of game and nobody has ever made a convincing argument as to why I should. Correct me if I'm wrong (seriously, please do, I readily admit I don't know much), and I'm basing this off of my experiences with fans of the series, but the games seem like they're only appreciated by fluent RPG fans that only tend to play them because they've burnt out on everything else that's popular.

You're sort of right about that. I was slightly pissed with the Final Fantasy series, so decided to look for another series to play. I already had Tales of Symphonia at the time (didn't know it was part of series yet), so I decided to play that. After that, I did some research and found out Symphonia was the 5th game of the series. Legendia was also out at the time, so I decided to buy it. It was okay. Abyss, along with Final Fantasy XII, were also coming out in a few months, so wanted both. Final Fantasy XII came out first. XII was okay. At this point, I was hyped up on the Final Fantasy series, so I decided to play Final Fantasy VII and X. I couldn't bring myself to play them. In the back of my mind, I was missing the Tales battle system. So I dropped Final Fantasy VII and X, and decided to play through Symphonia again. I guess it was around then I realized I liked the Tales series more than the Final Fantasy series. When Abyss came out, I loved it and beat in less than a week. After that, I decided to give Final Fantasy XII another chance, but didn't get very far before I decided to start my second playthrough on Abyss. Weird, I waited 2-3 years for Final Fantasy XII, and ended up liking Abyss, a game I waited for for a few months a whole lot more.

Why do I like the Tales Series more than the Final Fantasy Series? I like the battle system better. This is just personal preference, but turn-based boring. I really don't like standing there, waiting to attack while the enemy charges up their super attack. In the Tales Series, you can run around, dodge, and attack. Sort of like fighting game, except your characters don't feel as bulky. (To the people that don't like free-run, turn it off).

I would say the music in the Tales Series is better than the music in the Final Fantasy series, but aside from the generic RPG music they through into the games, some are really good. The music that plays during anime cutscenes (yes, anime cutscenes, I'll get to those later) and battles are where Tales music shines (except like any RPG, it can still get annoying after a while). Tales of Legendia is the exception. The music in that game is awesome. I've even imported the soundtrack from Japan. There isn't a single "miss" on that soundtrack.

Again, person preference, but I like Tales' anime style graphics better than Final Fantasy's CG graphics. I'm also a fan of anime, so yeah. The cutscenes and in the 2-D games, the character sprites are drawn beautifully. (Unfortunately, Sony of America frowns on 2-D games, so the 2-D games are never released in America).

Okay, huge post, but I'm not done yet. :P

The first game I got was Symphonia. I like it a ton. To this day, it's on the top of my list with Tales of Abyss. Like I said before, I got Legendia after Symphonia. I was a little disappointed with it, but it wasn't bad by any means. (It has the best soundtrack in the series. I'd even go as far as to say it's probably one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard in a videogame. Ever). After that, I got Abyss, and loved it right away. It's a lot Symphonia, so that's cool. My only complaint is the difficulty. It's either too easy, or too hard, depending on the difficulty you play on. I can't decide if it's better than Symphonia, even after going through a comparative playthough, so it's just tied with it. I later got Phantasia on the GBA, but after playing Abyss and Symphonia, I just put it down and imported Eternia on the PSP from Europe (again, Sony of America hates 2-D games). Eternia was fun. It's my favorite 2-D Tales game, even if it's voice acting was pretty bad. Now that I knew the PSP was region-free, I imported Tales of Destiny 2 from Japan. It was my first Japanese game ever, so I thought I would have trouble playing it. Surprisingly enough, it doesn't take a lot of Japanese to know how to play Japanese games. Yeah I was slightly overwhelmed at first, but I got though it and had a good time playing it (even if I had next to no clue what was going on :P). After Destiny 2, I imported Phantasia FVE too. It's like Phantasia GBA + Eternia PSP. I haven't beaten it yet. After playing fast games like Eternia and Destiny 2, playing slow Phantasia was a little boring. I'll probably pick it up again later. (Where was I? Okay, three more to go!) That summer, I bought Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology on the PSP. It's a pretty fun game, but only if you're a fan of series. It basically has a bunch of characters from every game in the series, and puts them into one game. Kinda like "what would happen if Luke from Abyss met Kratos from Symphonia?" (I don't think that ever happens though, but still). After RadiMyth, I got Innocence on the DS. This one was in Japanese too. Even though this one was in 3-D, it still didn't come here from some reason. Innocence was pretty fun. Probably one of the best 3-D battle systems. And it was harder than Abyss, so that was good. Apparently, it's story kind of sucks, but I wouldn't have known that had I not looked up the translation once I beat it. Meh, it seemed pretty good when I was playing it. After Innocence, I imported the PSP port of Rebirth the day it came out. I haven't beaten it yet. Rebirth has the most complicated battle systems in the whole series, and because it's in Japanese, I really have no clue what I'm doing some of the time. It's still pretty fun though. It's also really hard. Now I'm just waiting for Vesperia on the 360, Hearts on the DS, and RadiMyth 2 on the PSP. Vesperia is coming out in America around August 26, Hearts is coming in Japan this winter, and RadiMyth 2 is coming out next year. Looks like I'll be entertained for a while. :)

Lulz, very long post.

tl;dr: Tales Series = yes.

The new game, Tales of Hearts looks more like a Final Fantasy game.

And Slime Lord, I agree with you about FF games getting boring after a while, Tales games are more action paced, with better music (I'd like to see Motoi Sakuraba and Nobuo Uematsu do a music battle, that would be intense!)

I also agree about the Anime cutscenes, not very many games have them and Tales games are a refreshing taste of them (minus Symphonia with the lacked amount of them).

Tales of Vesperia comes out at the end of the month and I'm by hell excited!

Also, I was too brought on by Tales of Symphonia, but I knew it was in a series, cuz my friend (Yusei, or Cless Alvein) had Tales of Destiny II (or Eternia) for the PSX. And after about a year I saw that game I got Symphonia in 2006, and been a sorta fan being that I don't own a PS2.

I'm also excited about ToS2, but I still got to get a Wii!

They're making two different versions of Hearts. One with CG, one with anime. I personally am going to import the anime one because if Hearts even gets localized, we would probably get the CG one (which I would still get) because of all the 2-D hate.

And Vesperia comes out around the end of August. I wish it was the end of July. That would be cool. I've said this before, but I feel sorry for the European Tales fans. They're getting it sometime in 2009.

Don't expect either versions to get localized. That way you're not disappointed when they don't. We thought Innocence was going to get localized, but no...

I want to play ES. The disc drive on my 360 is broken though. (Piece of crap). I'll have to get it fixed before Vesperia comes out. It sounds pretty good. A bunch of reviewers are comparing it to the Vesperia demo, which is kind of stupid. Making assumptions that a game is bad just by playing a 15-30 demo isn't cool.

I guess I'll have to check it out then. Probably rent it just to check it out, to see if I like it.

(It has the best soundtrack in the series. I'd even go as far as to say it's probably one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard in a videogame. Ever).

Ever play the MGS series? That series ( 1-4 ) has some damn good music.

Woah...all this posting without me I will shun you all for that. My experience with the series is quite similar to Slime's minus the FF play as I actually love FFX-2 because Yuna and Rikku are goddesses. I originally got ahold of Tales of Eternia back in the day but I had no idea it was part of a great series and I never really played it at all. Eventually I played the GC version of Symphonia and I absolutely loved the game and of course previously I had played the SNES version of Phantasia.

During my time I've played Eternia on the PSP and Phantasia's GBA version but I never got around to playing the Full Voiced version of Phantasia since my PSP is now broken and it makes me very sad. Moving on though I do plan to buy Vesperia as well as a good few other games I have been waiting for such as SvsR2009 lol. Also I haven't played Eternal Sonata but I'm going to be borrowing it soon after I beat Enchanted Arms.

I am now currently playing Tales of the Abyss and I must say I am really enjoying it, certain things are a pain but you know it is still a good game, heard it is short but still sweet, as for Legendia I've heard some very bad things regarding that game however I also have the PS2 version of Symphonia too which I plan to play after Abyss and before Legendia. ^_^

I do not approve of this thread. FAIL ! (LOL)

And I do not approve of your FAIL' date=' if you plan to spam this thread then be prepared to get warnings, unless you have something constructive to say don't even touch your keyboard.

It isn't spamming if I'm giving something (i.e. opinion) relating to the thread (including the thread itself). People on this forum refer to spam whenever someone says anything negative about the thread, lighten up and get a clue not all comments can be positive.

Oh yes, saying it is fail is really constructive isn't it? Well it isn't mate so you need to go read a dictionary on what is and isn't constructive, I'm getting really irritated at your attitude and behavior and quite frankly you are starting to really get on my nerves.

Both of you STOP! Right, On Topic. The first game I played of the Tales series was Tales of Symphonia, I loved everything about it, The Battle System, The characters (Zelos was just pure genius) and especially the Music. You knew you were in deep crap when you were in a Boss Battle. Longevity was greatly increased by the Difficulty Ranks as well. But be honest all of you. Did you play as anyone other then Lloyd? I set myself a challenge once and played through the game as Genis when I could. It was a nice change of pace.
