Chuck Schuldiner

1967 - 2001

"Chuck Schuldiner was one of the most significant figures in the history of metal" - Kerrang! - 1.5.2002

Many of you, my fellow members of YCM, may not know who this man was. Today I will explain the significance of Chuck Schuldiner and what he did for the Death Metal community. This is part of a series I will make that will acknowledge the great names of metal.

How he became to be:

Chuck Schuldiner "The Father Of Death Metal" was born on the 13th of May in 1967 in Long Island, New York. Chuck moved to Florida (the state where his band "Death" was created) in 1968. At the young age of 9 Chuck received a guitar after the death of his 16 year old brother in hope that it would life some of the sorrow that came with the death. It wasn't until after his parents gave him an electric guitar that he took a real intrest in it (seeing as he attempted to go to lessons that he only took for less than a year before quitting). From then on he taught himself how to play, a truely remarkable feature.

Influences:

Chuck sites many influences such as KISS and Iron Maiden as inspirations, later bands such as Possessed, Slayer, and Metallica were influences that were applied to his music. Suprisingly, Chuck also enjoyed other forms of music such as Jazz and Classical but dislikes such music like Country and Rap (who can blame him).

Creation and Albums:

Chuck founded Death in the year of 1983 in Orlando, Florida.

Scream Bloody Gore - 1987

ScreamBloodyGore.jpg

Death's first major album Scream Bloody Gore was considered by many to be the first Death Metal ever released. The Album is compiled of tracks from Death's demo days and was, suprisingly, recoreded twice due to complications from the old record company. Strangly only about half of the tracks were re-recorded and put on the re-release.

Tracks Include:

"Infernal Death"

"Zombie Ritual"

"Denial of Life"

"Sacrificial"

"Mutilation"

"Regurgitated Guts"

"Baptized in Blood"

"Torn to Pieces"

"Evil Dead"

"Scream Bloody Gore"

Leprosy -1988

Leprosy, the second album released by Death has a different tone and a somewhat different style than that of Scream Bloody Gore. It like Scream Bloody Gore is marked as a very influencial album in the creation of Death Metal.

Track Include:

"Leprosy"

"Born Dead"

"Forgotten Past"

"Left to Die"

"Pull the Plug"

"Open Casket"

"Primitive Ways"

"Choke on It"

Spiritual Healing - 1990

200px-Spiritual_Healing.jpg

Spiritual Healing was the third album released by Death. It showed a more "Progressive Metal" tone than it's counter-parts. The lyrical styles of Death also took an entire 180. Going from gore related to social issues found in the world.

Tracks Include:

"Living Monstrosity"

"Altering the Future"

"Defensive Personalities"

"Within the Mind"

"Spiritual Healing"

"Low Life"

"Genetic Reconstruction"

"Killing Spree"

Human - 1991

album_death_human.jpg

Human, the fourth album released by Death marks a major turning point in the lyric and instrumental styles shown in the first three albums. The style becomes more technical and the lyrics become meaningful (more so). Human is considered to be Death's most acomplished album.

Tracks Include:

"Flattening of Emotions"

"Suicide Machine"

"Together as One"

"Secret Face"

"Lack of Comprehension"

"See Through Dreams"

"Cosmic Sea"

"Vacant Planets"

Individual Thought Patterns - 1993

200px-Individual_Thought_patterns.jpg

Individual Thought Patterns, the fifth album released by Death shows Death's progression towards Technical Death Metal. It also hold Death's most notable song The The Philosopher.

Tracks Include:

"Overactive Imagination"

"In Human Form"

"Jealousy"

"Trapped in a Corner"

"Nothing Is Everything"

"Mentally Blind"

"Individual Thought Patterns"

"Destiny"

"Out of Touch"

"The Philosopher"

Symbolic - 1995

200px-Symbolic_Album.jpg

Symbolic, the Sixth Album by Death shows the same technical styles of it's predecessors, but due to the slower song tempos the album is considered more of a Progressive Metal album, rather than a Technical one. If I were to suggest you to get any if Death's albums this one would be right on top due to its deep lyrics and awesome solos ;)

Tracks Include:

"Symbolic"

"Zero Tolerance"

"Empty Words"

"Sacred Serenity"

"1,000 Eyes"

"Without Judgement"

"Crystal Mountain"

"Misanthrope"

"Perennial Quest"

The Sound of Perseverance - 1998

SoundOf.jpg

The Sound of Perseverance, was Death's seventh and last studio album. The album like those before it shows the progressive style that death was building on after the realease of Human. The Album also include "Voice of the Soul", an instrumental that contrasts all of Death's other songs.

Tracks Include:

"Scavenger of Human Sorrow"

"Bite the Pain"

"Spirit Crusher"

"Story to Tell"

"Flesh and the Power It Holds"

"Voice of the Soul"

"To Forgive Is to Suffer"

The Death and Legacy Of Chuck Schuldiner:

After experiencing pain is his upper neck, around May 1999, Chuck consulted a docter and after a MRI it was concluded that chuck had Pontine Glioma. Many bands like Korn and The Red Hot Chili Peppers got tigether at an auction in the summer of 2001 to auction of some of Chuck's personal items to help with medical expenses. During the winter of 2001 Chuck became ill with Pneumonia during treatment (which included radiation and pills that weakened his severely) and died on December 13, 2001. But Chuck will always be remembered as

"The Father of Death Metal" due to his contributions that would lay down a foundation for Death Metal.

[/quote']

Well no, Iron maiden was an influence to Death but nonetheless, the band itself was a massive inspiration to many other bands.

Epic topic is simply epic. Chuck Schuldiner is one of the lesser known artist that has done more for the music world than most people around today and gets no recognition. Simply he was original and created a whole genre. Cant wait for Dimebag topic' date=' simply best musician ever
