Define "Broken"

Recommended Posts

A card which disrupts the balance of the game to the point that it's inclusion in a player's hand, or other applicable zone, is likely to cause a victory, or condition which significantly increases that player's chance of victory, for that player in a majority of situations, or an easy enough situation to achieve that the player using the card is unlikely to have problems in consistently bringing it about.

A card being broken can be a reason for it being ban-worthy, but it does not always mean it is ban-worthy (Example: Heavy Storm) and cards can be ban-worthy for other reasons, such as

having an effect which brings about unfair conditions (example: Match winners).

The term "Broken" is used to refer to any card that is considered to be overpowered, giving the user of the card a significant advantage.

The term is purely subjective. Many cards that are considered "Broken" are Forbidden, Limited or Semi-Limited in the Advanced Format, and some existing cards may have to wait before they can be considered broken; usually, this takes place during the release of newer cards, opening new strategies and Deck types to players. Also, some cards that are considered to be "broken" may only be so due to some kind of card combo that utilizes the card's effects to their maximum potential; sometimes, when used outside of that combo, said card may not fare as well as it would if it was in the combo. An example of this is Chimeratech Overdragon, who was considered to be broken due only to the Chimeratech OTK strategy.

Kinda curious to see what YCM thinks "Broken" actually means in a TCG sense.

Attempted topic exploitation fail.

I personally have defined "broken" as a card that gives the user WAY too much of an advantage for little to no real set-up and can be done with relative ease. It is absurdly subjective.

Examples:

Judgment Dragon (I'm inclined to believe Lightsworn decks w/ JD slowly sap the soul of the user until they care about nothing but winning, because I find playing and facing the deck to be ungodly boring and the only reason to keep using it is because it wins)

DAD (Borderline, but I see why people want it gone)

Brionac (Borderline, but it's so cheap...)

There are cards that are theme specific that are questionably broken because of how incredibly abusable they are: Mezuki/Plague. One of those is a little too abusable. I'm undecided on which.
