I've noticed some people have been saying things like "oh obelisk's summon can't be countered by that" when it CAN. Monster effects are spell speed 2 and Counters like Solemn Judgement can counter them because they are Spell Speed 3

Here is a below link

http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Spell_Speed

notice that spell speed 4 is optional for cards like Obelisk but tournament officials have said that Spell Speed 4 is invalid.

The problem isn't that people think Obelisk is some sort of magical Spell Speed 4; the problem is that the effect of Obelisk the Tormentor, printed right on the card, explicitly states "The Normal Summon of this card cannot be negated. When this card is Normal Summoned, Spells, Traps, and Effect Monster effects cannot be activated." That seems fairly straightforward, doesn't it?

In some cases' date=' monster effects are speed 3. This card is one of those cases. Anyway, it doesn't even matter, the card stops anything from being chained.

read this link and see how wrong you are

http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Spell_Speed_3

Says nothing about monsters

Heraklinos is speed 3. Prime Material is speed 3. lolWikia is wrong sometimes you know (most of the time actually, especially when we are talking about what cards to put in your deck).

That is what the people are using to debate back with saying it is a Spell Speed 4. judges have ruled that it means nothing. That Obelisk effect is Spell Speed 1

Solemn still beats Obelisk.

I'm not going crazy, am I? Someone else can see the "The Normal Summon of this card cannot be negated" line on Obelisk's text, right?

Well, you see, things that negate other things are generally speed 3.

Its because you can keep using there effects in a chain.

Naturia Extrio, for exmaple, also does that.

No you're not, just YCM is being YCM. It's pretty clear what that line of text means <_<

Cards with a "Once per turn, you can do [X]" text are different from "Discard [blah] to do [X]" effects.

Obveiously, you can keep using them.

It's just like how judges have ruled that Counter Traps can still be activated while you control a face-up Jinzo because they're Spell Speed 3. Except, wait, no, that never happened because none of this has anything to do with Spell Speed.

If these rulings exist, I'm sure you can provide links to them.

XD this thread is getting posted in too quick for me to keep up. Basically, Obelisk's summon cannot be countered by any spell or trap of any speed, even if that card NEGATES the summon. If you happen to say something along the lines of "Find me proof" then ask all of the experienced people on YCM.

*sigh*

I was thinking it was like a Solemn vs Stardust sort of thing.

But Obelisk's "ur cards suck" effect happens at all times, and not just when you play him.

....My bad.

No monster effects are Spell Speed 3, no matter what. Only Counter Traps are. Also, there is no such thing as Spell Speed 4 in the actual card game.

Obelisk's effect that states "The Normal Summon of this card cannot be negated" does not activate, therefore, it does not have a Spell Speed at all. They are conditions for its Normal Summon. When it is Normal Summoned, it cannot be negated. Its printed in plain black lettering on the card itself.

I don't see what's the issue here x.o;

No, Jaden, nobody here has mentioned Spell Speed 4 except for you. If this were about Spell Speeds, the problem would be that people would try to chain Solemn Judgment and then Obelisk's effect would be chained to Solemn to negate Solemn. Instead, what happens is that Obelisk's effect preemptively makes it against the rules to even activate Solemn Judgment. None of this has anything to do with Spell Speeds. If you could read, you would know that nobody here except you thinks this has anything to do with Spell Speeds. Now, provide links to your allegedly-existing rulings that Obelisk the Tormentor's effect contains two utterly meaningless sentences that have no effect whatsoever, despite the existence of numerous other cards with identical effects that do actually work, or shut up.
