Seeing how the Elements work, they take up a percentage of your being. From either 1% to 100%, though, 100% means you're either really good with fire, or you're the god of fire. However, adding more elements means you have less percentage for other elements. More so, if you specialize in both ice and fire, or any conflicting element, they must be balanced, otherwise you risk tearing yourself apart. If you have command of say, 8 elements, each would be 12.5% in order to balance them. Light and Darkness must always be balanced, otherwise you destroy yourself. But, having less control of an element means thta you lose to those who possess a greater control of it. So someone with 12.5% in fire loses to someone with 25% in fire. (Assuming you aren't a God or Overdiety) requires the knowledge of how to manipulate said element. As well as concentration. The concentration requited will vary depending on how powerful the attack you want to launch is. An example being choking your enemy to death with wind manipulation. Now in theory. A person with infinite concentration could command all elements indefinitely. However this is an impossibility due to the fact that even Gods have trouble with infinite concentration. This leads to the "Divided energy" theory. While spiritual or Mana energy does fuel manipulation it is concentration that determines effectiveness. It seems plausible to me.
