Priority Ruling Change

Recommended Posts

So, the OCG is apparently changing the "priority" rule. Monsters can no longer have priority over spells unless they are Trigger speed.
Meaning you can lol when you bottomless a DAD or Judgment Dragon.
Source, but it's in JP.

SO hopefully it's only a matter of time before it comes over to the TCG

Over a year late, it is now in the TCG

So lets say your summon Lyla so you cant priority and they can use bth and Lyla wont get her effect :0
Dont like this at all tbh. Changes the game.
And BTH would see play now.

Lyla could never destroy when she was Bottomlessed.

She would activate her effect to go to defense mode
Then Bottomless would get chained
Resolves backward
She's destroyed before she changed to defense mode and therefore never got to destroy.

Can someone exaplin to me how would this exactly work?

Priority still exists. Priority still allows my spell speed 2 spells and traps to be used as chain link 1 when a guy is summoned (Torrential, book of moon, etc...). If I summon a gadget I can still use its trigger effect as normal. If I summon an Exiled Force I now have to wait until after the "When a card is summoned" activation window before I can use its effect, so now my opponent can use book of moon or trap hole and prevent me being able to use his ignition effect to destroy their monster.

I...don't like it.

Ignition Effects having priority is a key part of the foundation of the game, and this change, if official, will severely change a ton of rulings and the power of several cards. And anyone who understands priority but isn't aware of the ruling change is going to be very confused and annoyed when other people are suddenly "idiots" and telling them they can't use priority the way they've always been able to.

More importantly, why are they changing this now?

Idk. Maybe to help out Exceeds?

Though the reasoning for limiting Book of Moon is a lot clearer now.

and yes, if this rule change occurs, only monsters with effects you have to activate will be effected(ignition). Monsters with effects that happen when you summon them (trigger), like Gadgets, Monarchs, Stratos, will not be effected.

Look, if they're changing the base mechanics of the game just to help Exceeds, then clearly they're stupider than I allowed myself to believe. This is like saying "let's try something new, but now let's change the very rules of the game so our idea doesn't suck as much".

Wouldn't this form of priority HURT Exceeds, who can't use their effects the moment they're brought out?

Book of Moon is both for Exceeds and the fact everyone runs it. That does not make it a good choice.

So wait, if I got this right. If a card's effect specifically designates activation at the time of Summon, like Debris Dragon or Gadgets, it works as always, meaning that first your effect triggers, then opponent chains. However, if its a card like Judgment Dragon, that has an Ignition effect at any time, they can Bottomless or Veiler it before I activate its effect?

If yes, Book's limit makes sense now

Yes, evidently Ignition Effects have to wait until the monster is Summoned and opponent/you has responded to Summon. You can still activate Quick Plays or Traps to your own Summon though, such as Torrential.

Uria will lose its priority-induced awesomeness. JD and DAD will lose a chunk of their power. Exiled Force is less awesome. Almost all other Ignition effects will be weakened.

Is this good or bad?
