Should the legal driving age be raised to 18?

There is no real "driving" age. Some states let you get your license at 17, some at 16, and I think even a select few at 15 (provisional license, I believe).

Any raising of the "driving" age on a state-by-state basis is stupid. You act as if you gain so much knowledge about driving in two years, when you aren't even driving those two years. Also, I would much rather have everyone start driving before they head off to college.

i think it shoud be lowered, it actually used to be 14 once. there are good reasons to this
1. 14 was considered to young mainly because of the height difference, but they have new functions to raise your seat or w/e, so instead they should make a height limit
2. younger people have faster reaction times to avoid major accidents and injuries than older people
3. younger people are more alert to danger because their fear in being inexperienced and doing something unfamiliar to them
4. even if you lowered it most parents and student would not want to deal with gas prices anyways, the legal age to go into the work force and provide an income to pay for gas is 16, so only the rich few can drive and the rich few according to the law of social status, means that no matter how smart or strong someone is, in social status who ever starts with a higher income has a enviromental advantage
5. 2 of my cousins got their license at age 14 and they had no issues with accidents and got even better as time progressed, so that when they did reach the age of 16 they were safer drivers than most adults. meaning good habits were learned because more parents take caution for a younger age setting better examples to follow off and all that

Go ahead. Then kids that play NFS and TDU are going to go street racing and kill themselves before they even hit puberty. Don't forget they should allow 12 year old gun licenses, and give 8 year old their own houses.

Pretty much this. Kids entering high school and only just starting or finishing dealing with puberty don't have the mental stability to be responsible for every other driver they come close to on the roads and they are far too easily distracted for their own good and the good of others. No offense freshman, but stay the heck away from my car.

In most countries, the age limit is 18, and even 21. The USA should learn.

Europe (and the rest of the world, in fact) might have the arguably smarter drinking age, but us Americans have the smarter driving age.

Don't hate 'cause we're awesome, son.

Nope, we hate 'cause you're wrong.

I personally believe that the age should be 18 - not necessarily because 16-year-olds are drastically worse drivers than 18-year-olds, but for psychological reasons. One of the things you saw your parents do when you were a kid - apart from drinking and having children - was driving. Somewhere, your brain connected "driving" with "being grown up" and it stayed in the back of your head for a while.

Fast forward, you're sixteen. You get your license. Suddenly, you're grown up. You can drink, you can have kids, because you're grown up. Personally, I would rather see that happening to someone with a complete high school-level education rather than an incomplete one.

...what kind of logic is that?

I highly doubt anyone associates driving with being able to drink or have kids, even on an age level.

If you surveyed a bunch of kids, I can assure you they associate driving with 16 or 17 and kids with 23 or 24. Just because you have the privilege to drive doesn't necessarily mean you feel you are an adult. I sure as hell don't feel like an adult, and I drive everywhere.

And you fail to realize that a ton of good things come out of driving before you go off to college. First, you get experience before you go to college, and unless you are going to a local college, you probably won't be bringing a car. I'd rather have kids get two years of solid driving before taking a four-year or six-year hiatus from driving while in college. Furthermore, it bestows a sense of responsibility upon teenagers.

Just because Europe is super-strict about their driving laws doesn't mean they are correct in their thinking; America sure as hell isn't correct keeping the drinking age at 21.

Driving should only be for male, 35-year-old, Caucasian, businessmen. *shot*
JK
I prefer it like this: 16 to drive with adult, 18 to drive with gf. At least gives teens chance to learn.

Iirc its already like that.
In Hawaii, you can drive at 14-15 with a permit or a person with a license present. 16-18, your parents are basically taking your punishments so you're still on that leash. And at 18 it's completely your responsibility.
