El Majishan
Ok, so the only TCG I've ever played is YGO (I collected pokemon cards when I was younger but never actually played the game) and I'm feeling to branch out and try something new for 2 reasons..YGO is getting stupidly expensive to stay competitive and the game is pretty herp derp with all the broken s*** you can do. The only other legit TCG that seems to get the same amount of support as YGO (In America because I believe Duel Masters is still pretty big in Japan) is MTG so its the most obvious choice to try out. The only problem is I didn't learn jack s*** from the few youtube vids I watched and I have no idea how the different formats work. I've often heard that you have to build a new deck every time an expansion set comes out because you are no longer allowed to use cards from previous sets...which seems like it can get just as expensive as YGO and that there is also alot of herp derp in MTG as well. So I ask YCMers who play BOTH MTG and YGO to compare and contrast the 2 games based on game speed, card prices, format design, fun factor ect ect. Intelligent Discussions ONLY...please and thank you
Dr. Cakey
inb4flamedragon Hell if I know. I've never played Magic. The people I know who do make it sound even more broken than YGO, along the lines of "and now I get infinity tokens that are invincible and i get infinity more every turn gg"

Ieyasu Tokugawa
Why does it matter? I'm also pretty sure this is gonna get moved to polls, because there is no point in comparing 2 games whose only similarity is that they involve shiny pieces of cardboard. Sleepy
I know how to play both games, but I only know about YGO competitive level and am VERY casual in MTG. From what I can tell you. I heard Flame Dragon say something along the lines of 3 very notorious MTG formats. Their equivalent of Traditional, their equivalent to Advanced, and their Rotation format. MTG does a lot of reprints pretty often. When something is reprinted in MTG, it means it's still legal. Also, the rarity distribution in MTG packs is Common, Uncommon, Rare, and Mythic Rare. You always get 1 rare + 2 or 3 uncommon cards in every pack. All packs have like 12 or 15 cards (I don't remember), and Mythic Rare is about as hard to pull out as a Super Rare in Yugioh is. When joining MTG (if you do), you have to know this: Look at the borders of the cards. Black Card Border: Card is good for official tournaments and stuff. Silver Card Border: If I recall, these are Joke cards. Although its usually easy to distinguish because of ridiculous characteristics in them anyways (like 3 and 1/2 power, or effects like: "When your opponent says the word Creature, you may yell Gatcha! and add this card from your Graveyard to your hand") White Card Border: I'm not 100% sure, but someone told me these are naturally banned. Decks containing cards with White and/or Silver borders are usually the ones that connect stupid combos for infinite 100000000000000 ATK tokens. Otherwise, what I've seen from the Black border cards is balanced. If you play casual its fun too. MTG has cards designed for games with multiple opponents. The casual games I've played, the game can last from about 4 or 5 turns up to more than an hour (of course I don't know about competitive level, and the only fast Decks I've seen are cheap burn RED Decks.) I'll finish this comment stating that I don't remember how accurate the part I said about the formats of the function of each card border is... and post this before my computer freezes (again)... El Majishan
I'm mostly interested in their version of advance...if I do start playing its going to start off as casual and hopefully becomes competitive. Thanks for your input
Well.............there are 2, possible now 3 formats (Yes MTG has alot of formats) that could be considered Advanced. First and foremost is Standard. It only allows the most recent Core set and the 2 most recent Block sets as being playable. There are few cards that get banned out right but it does happen. Second up is Extended It has a much bigger card pool. I won't go into detail on it so I'll show you what the wiki says.
Extended The Extended format, formerly known as Type 1.x, consists of the last four years of block rotations and core sets. With each autumn set release, one year's worth of sets rotate out of the format. Any additional sets released between rotations are automatically added to this format's card pool.[sup][5][/sup] This system was implemented in July 2010 to reduce the format's card pool, making it more attractive to play.[sup][6][/sup] The current Extended rotation (as of October 1st, 2010) consists of the Scars of Mirrodin, Lorwyn-Shadowmoor, Shards of Alara, and Zendikar blocks; and the Magic 2010 and Magic 2011 core sets.[sup][7][/sup]
Finally the possible third of the Advanced Lv. Formats is Modern The reason I say possible is that it has only recently come out. It has a very large card pool. Anycard thatt was in 8th and up are in it, excluding of course banned cards. Now I play yugioh and have only recently come back to the game of Magic. So I know I'm not the best at Magic currently and it will be a while before I consider myself tourny lv. Not really sure why I'm saying this though ?.?

burnpsy
Thread completely ignored that PKMN TCG gets the same amount of support as both of those and gives them both a run for their money in sales numbers (and overtakes them in some quarters). So I cannot take this thread seriously right off the bat.
-Lightray Daedalus-
@Sleepy: White Bordered cards were from reprints sets till 10th edition come and then all cards have Black borders MTG also has in each of its formats a gameplay style called PAUPER...which involve building Deck using only common Cards Which is also very popular and fun to play with. MTG Boosters contain 15 cards each: 1 Rare, 3 Uncommon and 11 commons (You have 1/8 chance of getting a mythic) also occasionally a foil card replaces a common in some packs (This foil card can be at any rarity) MTG Formats: Standard: Which cover the last 2 years of MTG sets and this is the format that rotates more often changing every year. Extended: Covers the lastest 4 Years of MTG it rotates in a different frequency than Standard Modern: Is one of the newest formats and covers all the set starting from 8th edition. Is a static format meaning nothing will rotate out. Legacy: Is the Format where cards from the very first set till now can be used. (This format alonside Modern has different Banlists and stuff) Casual Formats: Pauper: As said pauper is a format where the only cards you are allowed to use. Pauper has 4 different Variants 1 for each of the Big Formats (Standard,Extended,Modern and Legacy). Commander: is a format Where Deck revolve around a commander (Much as YGO Duel masters) Decks has special Building rules and is also allowed for multiplayer. This is one of the most popular casual games 2 Headed Giant: Is a casual Format for 2v2 players. It has special rulings on Deck Building and Gameplay. Archenemy and Planechase: Are multiplayer format that adds new cards types that interact with players in certain way. Planechase makes use of planes which modifies the game adding global effects in the form of a Field Spell esque way...has special rules for them and also visits lots of well known places in the MTG universe. Archenemy on the other hand add special schemes cards that the archenemy can use in their 1 on Many players...the goal...defeat the archenemy of course...but doing so might not be as easy as it seems... =D @Burnpsy: He said he tried pkmn in the OP too

Though it won't give strategies and stuff (I don't think anyways) Though the good stuff in terms of card gaining aside from getting singles is getting the Advanced lv. Decks <3. If you you don't want to learn to play vie, the CD, you can upload Cockatrice which is an online mtg simulator that you can make decks and play against others. There of course is also a mtg club in the forums if you feel up to joining (if you haven't already). El Majishan
@Burn: Reason I left out pokemon is because I the only people who play in my area are usually around 8-12....to young of a crowd for me to get all nerdy with. @Pluto: thanks for your input. Extended, Modern and legacy seems to be the most pocket friendly formats though I heard legacy is just as bad as YGO's traditional format.
burnpsy
Fair enough. In any case, you mentioned you were looking for the main MtG format? That would be Standard. Though I'd go for Modern if you want to hang on to your money.
El Majishan
Standard is the usual tournament format? Or is Modern just as supported tournament wise.
burnpsy
Standard is the main. Modern is really, really new, so the popularity is only now starting to form, though it's being hyped.
shelds9
For as long as I've played YGO, MTG is taking up most of my time nowadays. If you are someone who likes creativity, setup, and complexity, MTG if you. There are way more Top Decks to make and way more card choices. I like strategy/setup games, so MTG is good for that. There are many different things that happen in MTG, which makes it IMO more fun in-duels. It also has many different ways to play, and many different formats to test skills. I personally prefer MTG ATM. Yugioh is for people who like casual battling and winning. There is less creativity in Yugioh, less setup/strategy, and most people just use proven-to-win Decks, and there are not many. Yugioh provides less of a thrill for me. Magic the Gathering is just more... creative is the best word I can think of...

Just to mention one of the reasons, it is enough to look at the ratio of power. MTG: Life= 20 Usual Attack = 1, 2, or 3 and keeps allowing slightly stronger monsters with time if the Deck is well build. YGO: LIfe= 8000 Usual ATK= 2000, 2500, 3000, even 4000 sometimes, having the ability to easily clear full fields and drop multiple monsters upon turn 1. YGO can bring out more than a player's set LP worth in power while MTG, at least I haven't seen it so stupidly easy to do. I saw a super RED/BLUE 15/15 boss once, and I had a 70 creature once.... in a 5 way game... after like, 1 1/2 hours.
byak
It's all about preference. If you want a fast paced game, pick ygo, if not, pick magic.
burnpsy
It honestly doesn't take too long to hit for >20 in MtG. I can drop a 11/11 Flying Haste guy or a 11/3 Trample Haste guy on turn 2 if the setup's right... It's just that people go for more sturdy decks. It's not that MtG is slower or anything.
