For the tl;dr crowd: Discuss Werewolves. DO NOT DISCUSS TWILIGHT SAGA.

Ah, the werewolf. One of the most iconic monsters in modern fantasy-fiction to date. In simplest terms a werewolf is half-man, half-wolf. Due to years of interpretation and liberties, the exact nature of the beast and how it came to be differs greatly between media. In most cases, the full moon acts as the harbinger to awake this creature from it slumber within an unfortunate soul, transforming humans from simple frail men into savage, powerful hybrids. Another interesting and common knowledge of werewolves is that they have become the go-to rival for another modern fantasy monster race: Vampires. Whether it be the in box office hits such as Underworld or Twilight Saga (the latter of which I would prefer NOT to be brought up) or in foreign media like Hellsing, this rivalry has become a more popular setting for the beast to attract attention.

IMO: Werewolves are not as common today as much as their rivals. It seems that, while also a monster in their own right, the more human-looking creatures of the night sway the hearts of today's audiences. Vampires bring about a certain charm to them, commonly displaying and balancing signs of seduction and power. Their need to feed on human blood and humanlike appearance, favors them to be the epitome of how a regular human could struggle with 'being a monster'. Not mention the ease of portraying this in today's media: false fangs, pale skin, and red contact lens. Werewolves, by contrast, lack this humanlike charm by relying on their savage tendencies. Having no internal weakness, and in most cases cognitive thought, they distance themselves from being at all relatable to humans. Only those few who can maintain human form can be connected with and be used to reflect ourselves upon. For this reason, I believe werewolves to be less common in today’s media.

On a side note, I believe another factor is the concept of Bestiality. Humans can love almost-human-in-every-way vampires, but when a human wants to love an animal hybrid creature? Behold! They magically reverted back to human form or became a very hairy, handsome man. Thanks for breaking that concept Beauty and the Beast. 'Love a person for who they are on the inside, but if you want to marry them and make babies they had better revert back into a human. Thus destroying that first line about looking past one's appearance'. However, this last segment is solely based on a lack of in-depth research into the idea.

To sum up this rant, discuss the topic of werewolves in its entirety. Their origins from medieval times, their currents powers and abilities, how and where they are portrayed, your personal opinions of them, etc. I await your 'Werewolves R kewl' replies and the inevitable 'Twilllight ruitned everytheing 4r everyong' trolls. For the rest of you, have fun.

Say, did their rivalry with vampires start with Twilight, or was it existing long before that?
I doubt natural werewolves are real, though the government could have always tried splicing wolf and human DNA...
In all seriousness, probably one of my favorite mythological creatures. I should go as one for Halloween some time.
