United Kingdom

Organized Chaos

Now I know, this may sound like I'm doing this just because I am English but what do you guys think of the United Kingdom ? The only 2 reasons I'm really bringing this up is because of both the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics happening this year which is a bit interesting. So yeah, discuss.

The amount of people I've spoken to that think Ireland is part of Britain, that Britain is a separate country in itself, that the UK includes France (I still don't even get this one), among other misconceptions. I swear, most Americans know nothing about the UK.

Personally I'd say I love the UK, bar the weather and cities. Simply put I'm not a fan of rain or overly crowded places.

The rural scenery is one to be admired though.

I'm English (specifically. I prefer English but I wouldn't punch you in the face for calling me British and lumping me in with the Welsh and the Scotch and the Northern Irish. I'm only very passionate about that whole rivalry thing when it comes to the small matter of beating them up at rugby :D)

Had only passing interest in the Jubilee. I like the queen and having a monarchy mainly because its what I know and I see no reason to get rid, especially given American's alternative of Presidency. But I wasn't massively into it, just "Yes, very well done ma'am. Very good." Did we really need this much fuss? Well, I guess we did, its a good news story which makes a change.

Have absolutely no interest in the Olympics whatsoever, other than the potential increase in revenue/workload at work (the hotel I work for has great access to London). Just couldn't give a monkeys.

Yes I complain about the weather. Yes it has some crappy areas of its major cities (but I lived in [s]stab city[/s] Nottingham for best part of two years, and it was beautiful and lively in the majority of areas as long as you stayed out of one or two places). But its a good place to live. I'm able to live comfortably and my recent holiday to Rutland Water was just the best.

Except for when it rained. Bloody typical.

As a Londoner an' all, I gotta stick my face round 'ere, eh, guv.

Fish & chips, an obsession with curry, three hundred companies trying to cash in on the Olympics, rain, tea, football, rain, an influx of gay comedians for no reason, ohgod david cameron, the queen, pippa middletons arse, oh and rain /thread

I'm not really fused either way except when the weather gets too hot. I like the snow (when we rarely get it) and I find rain soothing (provided I'm not out in it). I admit I do love the rural Scottish scenery if it wasn't so far where I live in England I would move up there. (I like having family around) where I am the rural scenery is mainly farms and very flat.

A real international relations man here. Small minded? Are you insane??

I just didn't know some of the people were from there, but I didn't care in the first place anyways.

I'm not small minded, I just don't realize.

Or maybe I am small minded.

Or you're indifferent and he's anglo-centric.

The UK isn't a country.
[/quote]
Technically the UK is a country, just a country consisting of four different countries. Given the rather idiotic uses of terms that got applied to the British Isles, I really don't blame people who screw them up when it's even done by people who live there.

A country made up of 4 countries? This logic, it is flawless!

In their defense, it probably had to do with technicalities regarding entering the EU and citizenship.
