What if monsters couldn't attack the turn they were summoned?

Recommended Posts

Presumably if you go first then you can't attack on your second turn.

Why couldn't you?

I'm pretty sure it'd be a fine deal. No player can attack turn 1 or 2, and monsters summoned turn 3 can't attack either. Works fine.

I'm also sure they'd have made monsters that bypass this of course.

It'd give you time to see your opponent's swarm for a turn and be able to have a turn of your own to get rid of it without the huge Battle Damage, unlike IRL that requires you to use that instant Battle Fader or a desperate Veiler at times, to survive.

Of course, your opponent would build around keeping control and advantage.

Cards like Big Eye and Volcasaurus would kind of ditch that drawback, but the drawback only exists to prevent OTKing too stupidly.

As of Main Deck monsters, cards like Monarchs would have more use, and "Big Tusked Mammoth" would pretty much have no effect.

In MtG, summoning sickness prevents not only attacking but also abilities that require the creature to tap. There isn't really a good analogue for that in Yu-Gi-Oh. I'm not sure if that's an obstacle or not, though.

Not only does the player going first get the chance to play cards first, he can also attack first. It just gives more advantage to the player going first.

This thread doesn't exactly have a hundred posts in it. Read the previous ones?

I think the summoning sickness should only really apply to Special Summoned monsters cause they're the biggest threat. Sure, Hunders, Constellars and Verz (and to a smaller extent Madolche & Gadgets) would have a slight advantage in that they have multiple Normal Summons a turn, but they don't have enough power to OTK based purely on Normal Summons.

It would suck to go second.

Yup, because the opponent can chain basically anything you do if you go 2nd.

Nope. As far as I know, you can`t attack 1st turn if you go first. And in DN, I`ve still seen that rule apply today.

Let me acquaint you with Zumar's meaning.

Example: Player A takes the first turn and summon Thunder King Rai-Oh. He can't attack with Rai-Oh this turn.
Player B takes the second turn of the duel and summons Gene-warped Warwolf. Due to the rule, he can't attack with Gene-Warped Warwolf this turn.
Player A takes the third turn, uses a Forbidden quick-play spell and attacks Gene-Warped Warwolf.

Player A took the first turn, and his monster was the first one able to attack. This is because Player A gets the first opportunity to put a monster on the board and, therefore, can more likely have one on the board at the start of their future turn (such as the third turn of the duel).
It is just about impossible for Player B to attack on their first turn, because that would mean they summoned a monster during Player A's turn.
