Number 66: Master Key Beetle

2 Level 4 DARK Monsters

Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card to target 1 other card you control; while this card is face-up on the field, that target cannot be destroyed by card effects. If this card would be destroyed, you can send 1 of those targets to the Graveyard instead.

2500, protection from effects, can turn whatever it targets into a protection card, this thing is just absolutely amazing. It's also great for keeping certain pieces you want to use over and over on the board, for the next turn.

So, remember when people thought of non-generic numbers as impossible?

Black Mist and Heaven's Strings? Or just in general?

OT- Amazing card. Bonus points for being the Number that broke the Over 100 Number/Chaos Xyz chain in the anime. Nice stats, great effect, decent art, 2 Level 4 DARK monsters isn't too hard to pull off. Love it. Look foward to the TCG release.

I'd say that Hootcake means in general, but yeah the fact that Black Mist and Heaven's Strings became generic IRL overshadow'd the fact that they had specific materials in the anime.

OT: Amazing card, shame thay'll get a rarity bump in TCG though, then again I wouldn't mind if it got a rarity bump though.

And then came #8…

And yes, awesome art, good effect.

Yeah, the anime had Number 96 require DARK Materials, which would have been ridiculous to require in RL, and Number 40 also required DARKs, which would also have been kind of pointless in RL, since it's not nearly as powerful in the OCG/TCG.

However, Number 8 WOULD have been broken if it was generic, considering how absurdly easy it is to make a Rank 4, and one that steals Xyz effects, their ATK, and makes them 0 is just ridiculous. So making it specific to Heraldic Beasts was a good move, especially since Heraldics have that Spell Card that makes an instant Rank 4 if you have 2 Heraldics in Grave.

Fran Ken was the next non-generic with requiring DARKs, but that makes sense because the thing's a 4500 with 2 Materials.

And this needing DARKs really doesn't hurt too much, considering how solid its effect is.

As far as I see it, Master Key Beetle would require you to not only be running DARK Level 4s that can be spammed, but actually have some sort of card you want to preserve from card effect destruction. Things like Safe Zone are obvious, as protecting Safe Zone keeps a monster safe from battle, targeting, and effects. And if Key Beetle is protected by Zone, the fact you can send the targeted card to the Grave to keep Beetle alive becomes irrelevent, as Beetle itself can't die.

In that sense, Key Beetle + Safe Zone is the most obvious combo.

Maybe Field Spells or Continuous Cards will also be something to maintain, but it's harder to consider which ones would really benefit from being bonded to Key Beetle's life in exchange for being indestructible. Monsters are another resource, and where Beetle really can shine with its effect...but only if it's a monster whose effect will help protect Beetle itself, and is unlikely to be destroyed by battle.

Beetle just isn't a generic weapon. Evilswarm has better options to most threats. Beetle is a more defensive creature, protecting your resources.
