D.A.s "Staunch Control" Format

Recommended Posts

The idea of this format is to put OTKing to a stand still. It does this by preventing you from attacking if you perform actions and forces you to commit more to the board than you would otherwise not bother with. I do realize that due to just how slow this format is that Alt-win/Burn decks would have an unfair advantage and are therefore banned.

The Rules:

 1. You cannot attack if you have Summoned or Set a monster outside the Battle Phase unless a mandatory effect has forced you too.
 2. You cannot attack if you have activated a card outside the Battle Phase unless it's a mandatory effect.
 3. You can attack if all you have done is set a Spell/Trap card &/or played an Equip Spell Card/card the specifically involves the Battle Phase (Example: Spellbook of Power) outside the Battle Phase.
 4. There is no Main Phase 2.
 5. This http://forum.yugiohcardmaker.net/topic/299882-new-start-and-new-ending-phase-for-yugioh/ is in effect (this is subject to change and is merely something I want to try out)

Banned Decks:

 • Exodia
 • Final Countdown
 • Burn Deck
 • Time Eater Deck of any kind
 • Mill
 • Self Destruct Button

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

What exactly would be defined as a Burn deck in this format? Decks like Chain Burn that focus on exclusively damaging opponents while stalling? Or stuff like Minefield Golem Burn.dek where burn damage is incorporated but also works alongside other elements?

Besides that, I honestly like this idea quite a lot. I feel it is genuinely balanced although it could also be very monotonous and slow at points. But still, a very good idea.

Decks that use burn for the vast majority if not the entirety of beating you down. So Chain Burn, Electrum OTK, and Blaze Phoenix. Stuff along those lines. If you just happen to have a card that deals burn damage like Gagaga Cowboy or Volca then that's fine. Just as long as the main focus isn't burn damage.

But I could just keep a Moprhtronic Datatron on the board and as long as I had enough Book of Moons/Mirror Forces/D Prisons/Theratening Roars etc. I could just keep it out and burn for game. You'd have to do a bit more about this sort of thing plus limit/ban things like D Prison, Mirror Force and Sakuretsu.

I don't have any plans on limiting/banning stuff outside of whats already limited/banned.

& also, if your going to do that specifically then you would get a lose for trolling.

"Burn deck" is such a large term. My suggestion would be to just add another rule: all Effect Damage is reduced to 0 during resolution. Clears out all the strictly burn cards while keeping many cards still "playable". (Volcasaurus can still blow stuff up, Gagaga Cowboy can still use his ATK effect, etc.)

I'll think about it.

Changed the name to "Staunch Control".

Staunch because Chance sujested it and then I looked the word up.
staunch
/stônCH/

Adjective
 1. Loyal and committed in attitude: "a staunch supporter of the antinuclear lobby"; "a staunch Catholic".
 2. (of a wall) Of strong or firm construction.

Synonyms
loyal - faithful - stanch - firm - steadfast - trusty
Then I added control. Because control is what makes you win in this format. (Cough Tiaramisu)

So Basically

Staunch because you have to commit to your field and trust in it that it wont die. And control because you have to make sure they cant get around your plays.

Thus "Staunch Control".

Ban Mermails and Self-Destruct Button decks.

Mermails no.Self-Destruction Button yes.

This is not a format where you & your opponent can otk. It a format where you have either a devote completely to attacking or devote completely to setting up. Thus making Decks like mermails lose their explosive power.
