Number 44: Sky Pegasus

[Rank 4/LIGHT/Beast/Xyz/Effect/ATK 1800/DEF 1600]

2 Level 4 monsters
Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card, then target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; destroy it, unless your opponent pays 1000 Life Points to negate this effect.

This card is one of the reasons why I'm pissed at whoever was in charge of creating the card's IRL version with a fiery passion, and makes me seriously question why I play this game, when interesting cards like this are nerfed so badly, and in the same vein, we get broken stuff in just about every March format.

This card in the anime had a very interesting effect that let it equip itself to another Number, and granted that Number the ability to attack twice each Battle Phase.  It also had a more broken effect that is the same as this one, except the opponent had to pay 500, and when they paid any Life Points, Pegasus would burn them for the amount they paid, which would wreck with the Solemns (hence I would have no problem if they had gotten rid of that).  These anime effects made up for the guy's weak stats, which is how monsters should be designed (strong stats make up for weak effects or strong effects make up for weak stats).

Instead, they removed all of his effects but the worst one, which is utterly useless unless your opponent has less than 1000 Life Points, and even then, Blackship of Corn, Diamond Dire Wolf and Gagaga Cowboy all do this guy's job better.  The only time Sky Pegasus would help you is if you're already winning, which is sad, because that is not what should have become of him, and he is an example of what happens when you get too zealous with nerfing cards.  The only things backing him up are being a Number, which allows him to be Ranked-Up to Number C106, being LIGHT (therefore Honest) and being Beast-Type (therefore Chain Dog and Horn of the Phantom Beast).

Also, they could have made his burn-when-paying effect chain to the paying effect, so it couldn't be chained to the Solemn Bros.

I think this is the worst nerf any card has had in a while, but someone feel free to correct me. They took it from 'I could build a deck around this' to 'why would I even consider playing this?'

It suffered, but frankly some of it was deserved.

It should never have kept the double what you pay effect under any circumstances, because that was a horrible effect for it to have.

The Biggest blow was the Numbers supporting effect... I don't get why they got rid of that, especially when it was even released in Number Hunter.. It just baffled me.

But yeah, it's suffered from legendary Number treatment. They become crap mostly when they get released IRL. Which just makes me sad.

Well, not all of them. I know Judge Buster is now a contender for worst Number, Lion Heart isn't much better, but if I recall, Dragulong didn't get nerfed TOO bad compared to the other three.

OT-  Seriously though, would it have killed them to at least leave the Number effect.....?

It would have been okay if this wasn't the ONLY effect it had. I get that Rank 4s are borderline broken due to how spammable and splashable they are, but that doesn't mean "print awful Rank 4s so that people have no reason to use them". I also realize that Numbers, by their blatantly collectible nature, will always have a demand.

But Sky Pegasus was already mediocre in the anime IF the only thing it had going for it was this effect. The unused, but seen via lore, effect of equipping to Numbers gave us what we want more Numbers to have: SUPPORT for Numbers that actually helps Numbers. Something to bind the pseudo-archetype together. The anime lately has been using more S/Ts that support Numbers, which continue to be an unaddressed, but good for speculation, plothole. Numbers are from a different world. They came to the human world when Astral did, scattered as pieces of his memory. Therefore, if humans are printing the cards, why the hell do they have cards that specifically support cards that don't exist?

It could be justified by the fact the only character(s) using Number support had Barian power in some form (III, etc), and later Duels seem to imply that Barians create cards and strategies specifically to take out Numbers. But then Yuma suddenly started using Number support S/Ts...and that's annoying as hell due to the above plothole.

The burn of Sky Pegasus was too powerful in the form it had, even if it was super conditional, but there had to be some way to give it more than this random "destroy or burn 1000" and not make it OPed, especially with such pitiful stats. Even if it was something like "this card can't be destroyed once per turn" or something else to give it longevity.

The issue is not just that it was nerfed, but that it was nerfed in a way that took away it's most noticeable traits.

It's like what happened to Ra, as the god of resurecction that cannot have anything to do with reviving, and as a 0 ATK monster that no longer gets the life force of it's Tributes.

Yes it's something that pisses off fans.
