Azuh’s 10 Changes I would like to see in Yugioh

Recommended Posts

Okay, there's definitely a strong case against power-level errata and I would be inclined to agree with it; except for two things.

The first being to play Yugioh by the book you have to do a lot of online-searching and digging to understand the game, including individual card rulings, as it is. Going by the literal text of the cards does not work; so what difference would power errata really make in that regard?

The second being is it really better to ban a card completely than to change its text? Butterfly Dagger - Elma is only overpowered because players found an unintended exploit in the game to create continuous loops and has thereafter been banned. If this card's function was slightly changed, say to return during the End Phase, it would be an easily unlimited card. Clearly the same cannot be said for other cards such as Pot of Greed; but for several others the possibility of a simple rule patch on a card-by-card basis would do wonders.

The fact that a problem exists does not mean that we should keep dismissing problems entering the game just because another problem already exists.

We must strive to fix the game, not let keep getting shitty in those aspects.

So I'd personally be against giving yet another reason to go check data online.

Not exactly. I'm against any card game company changing what their cards do. It might look like something harmless first, but it can get too hard to keep track of once you do it to 10 or 20 cards, and once you made the change, having the game evolve yet again and the company deciding that the retrained version now is bad, and the previously considered broken one is just right (Hint: Swords of Revealing Light), then change it again.

Might as well not write anything in the cards and tell the players to go look the effects online.

Even legit changes like the erratas that actually have taken place, are handled in a really crappy way by Konami.

I mean, they waited a year or two to update Polymerization to "Extra Deck" while they kept reprinting it. They Took over a decade to update Summoned Skull, and they reprinted it in Legendary Collection 1, Legendary Collection 3, Dark Beginning 1, Legendary Collection 4, Dark Legends, Duel Terminal 5, Retro Pack, and even their oh so important celebration Anniversary pack. All knowing that the card needed some sort of errata. Many other of their Archfiend cards that were reprinted, if not all, are all pretty worthless by nowadays overall, and it's sad that they didn't correct their own product when it mattered more, and when their product was the most popular.

Ideally, if they corrected those mistakes in a more timely manner, it's what I'd call legit. Otherwise it's crappy planning, or in the case of Butterfly Dagger, just problematic. Well, either way of errata creates problems, but not because of that we'll say "screw it, let's do it" and add more problems voluntarily.

It's more business smart to create a new replacement for people to buy, and it's more clean if you really wanna use Elma, which is pretty much the only benefit that bringing Butterfly back to the game has.
