Diet high in protein as bad as smoking?

I don't know if any of you guys go to the gym, bulk, diet, etc. (since I barely roam around sections other than Graphics) but the telegraph posted this topic about diets that have high protein. To save them criticism I'll post the NHS link instead since it's a bit more "respectful" (?)

http://www.nhs.uk/news/2014/03March/Pages/high-protein-diet-may-be-harmful-for-middle-aged.aspx

In general, I think what they're trying to say is that human nature has this thing for different consumption in different ages. From infancy till before middle age, there should be a high protein intake. Middle age should be seen as the years of hard work and activity. If anyone knows anything about nutrition it is that carbs are essential for activity (basic year 3 science) and thus meaning that middle aged humans should be active.

Sadly, jobs have changed overtime and many of the current jobs have a low form of activity or no activity at all.

I'd go on and say more but I'll leave the rest for you.

BREAKING NEWS:

Scientists in America have discovered that breathing in natural air can increase your risk of getting various diseases due to the percentages of certain natural gases in the atmosphere, and that it would be better for everyones health and you'd live longer if you didn't breath so much...

I mean seriously, there's a story like this every week how this perfectly normal thing is actually bad for you, or this could increase your chances of cancer. Yeah probably; if you were a moron and ate in truely ridiculous excess proportions. A lot of this is just pointless stories, and tbh I would not be remotely surprised if it came out that these scientists doing the scare-mongering recommended those concerned to change your diets to eat these foods that, just by sheer coincidence, are made by a company we have shares in/spouses working for. Not saying that's definitely what it is, I'm not a conspiracist, just a cynic who wouldn't be remotely surprised if it was.

Here's an idea: How about we all just live normal regular lives, and (within reason) do and eat whatever the hell we all want?

We're all slowly dying anyway and it sounds better than being dictated to and made to live in fear of every little thing.

Who said dying was the problem, Mr.Cool-guy? It's a very philosophical idea to be discussing, that's why people enjoy reading these articles and trying to connect the ideas of nature to why this is occurring. I didn't post this so you'd all be like, "OH YES NOW I WILL STOP EATING ANIMAL PROTEIN TO LIVE 435834598 YEARS!!!111!!!!ONE!1!!!".

Stop being so stupid and so superficial. This topic wasn't to discuss nor to promote you to eat less protein. This topic was to bring about why this is occurring and the nature of life.

This just shows that you're better off juggling with your Yu-Gi-Oh cards and enjoying nothing but that. Go ahead and live a life of superficiality. Obviously none of you can actually discuss philosophical matters and natural trends. All you want to do is just live without pondering.

The thought of some prepubescent kid sitting in his room juggling yugioh cards is fucking hilarious.

Try not to make a sweeping generalization off of...
One bad example. It makes you look rash and overemotional (not a virtuous sensitivity as much as volatile).

Obviously a lot more contemporary jobs are sedentary, and the way that technology evolves to cater to the hedonism that is laziness is an additional detriment. Devices that further this catering are desktops, elevators, cars, et cetera. But I think that tablets and these handheld devices that act as more mobile computers than laptops contribute very much to this. Rather than even having to travel to one's desktop, the social network-obsessed individual (most of us in the obsession) can stay on their sofa and do anything they like from there. Not to mention that more companies are participating in the selling point of social networking, which attracts even those who would never before use these devices for very long.

Jobs, of course, are worsening as well. Have you ever heard of people who used to work at a corporation building but, through social networks and other socializing programs, can do their work from home? People are not being encouraged for a healthy lifestyle because the immediate reward that sloth offers is irresistible to the materialistic, American society that very heavily influences the rest of the globe.

Just a quick thought. I have no time to continue, unfortunately.

Dude wtf? Touchy?

Even if that wasn't your point you were trying to make, discussions go off on tangents, and given the discussion is diet related I voiced my opinion because these constant food and health stories that this relates to irritate me. Just because it wasn't all deep and in agreement with you and no-one else did post no need for a meltdown.

Tbh YGO is the least of my interests. I enjoy a lot of stuff, and that includes working out, since you mentioned the protein shakes in your OP as something relating to this story as well, and that's something I wouldn't go near for me anyway. But I just want to do whatever is least stressful and most enjoyable in life as I want, so I dismiss this sort of story that like I said appears constantly. What's the problem with that? Yeah I dramatized my post a bit for laughs, but seriously, chill out. If you were expecting a tidal wave of posts in support of anything on YCM, really dude, wrong forum.

Really Night? Really? I do hope that's not aimed at me. <_<

Yes a lot of scientists do a lot of good stuff, obviously. But Qi has shown us that a lot of them do waste their time on some rubbish. This is isn't entirely the latter, but it's really not worth the coverage it's been getting on Sky News all day.

Ps: I imagine juggling YGO cards would be bloody tricky.

Nahh m8, in regards to this debate I'm a mutual third party.

The notion of someone actually juggling yugoh cards just seems so hilariously moronic.

It's not really helping that we have technology nowadays to do stuff (considering that we live in an age where using electronics is almost like breathing/natural body functions). As such, we don't move around a lot, hence less calories are burned.

Combine that with usual eating habits, and well the pounds (or kilograms for everyone outside the USA) will pack on. Given that lots of people eat red meat (i.e. hamburger, steak, etc.), it adds up. Might explain why America has a high obesity rate though (I'm not one of those people at risk though, mind you).
