[Mercenary of the Black Chain] Fiendish Chain/"with Chain" Trap searcher

When this card is Normal Summoned: You can add 1 "Shadow Spell", "Chain" Continuous Trap Card or "with Chain" Normal Trap Card from your Deck to your hand. Once per turn: You can target 1 face-up "Shadow Spell" or "Chain" Trap Card you control, and 1 Spell/Trap Card your opponent controls; destroy those targets.

Yet another card that follows the "Myrmeleo formula" of searching for backrow. Except that this one is designed to take advantage from ROTA, Recurring Nightmare, Masked Chameleon/Druid Dru, and has a more convenient ATK. Its best targets are "Fiendish Chain" and "Blast with Chain".

This + Blast with Chain = +1 play, and that's intentional.

I admit the card feels a bit too strong but, really, the power creep is so formidable right now that I think it can handle it just fine. I would say it is not that different to the Bear+Tenki engine.

And yeah, that's Black Rock Shooter in the artwork, but the card and effect are meant to be Realistic. I looked for an image that was not related to any character or series but I couldn't find anything as awesome as BRS.

Thoughts?

EDIT:

11/11/14: Now it can search for "Shadow Spell" for a bit more of versatility and a bit of flavor (Shadow Spell has chains in its artwork).

Konami has released some questionable support before, but I think this just tops them all not only in strange choice, but in how useful it actually is. I don't think it's actually that bad because the Chain cards weren't any sort of meta beside Fiendish. In fact, mostly what I see this doing is being a side deck card or one of those tech cards like how lower tier decks love to play the Hands. The Bear/Tenki Engine is better because you can use it right away, but the combos with this engine are more versatile, especially with Blast With Chain, because MST isn't as much of a problem cause then at the very least you get a +0 and there is much more disruption. It actually would be interesting to see more of these "Chain" monsters and maybe more Chain cards, being able to use them to cause even more interaction and explosiveness. It sounds a little powerful on paper, but banishing a Special Summoned monster vs. making an Effect Monster a sitting duck until an MST arrives seems much more fair if you ask me. Overall, a nice card that brings some interesting thinking process and would probably be a decent tech or side choice.

Thanks for your comment. Making more "Black Chain" monsters that support Chain traps is a neat idea (they wouldn't be that different to the Traptrix archetype) but I'm not feeling like making an archetype around this card anytime soon.

More Chain Traps would be neat as well, but I can't think of anything right now, Fiendish/Blast are already good enough in my opinion, and I kind of want to leave that task to Konami, who may randomly make new Chain Traps in the future that fall in this card's searching range.

Also bump.

I uhh.. think you pretty much say everything I would have said in your OP xD
It could be worse; you could have made it Set the Chain Trap Card again rather than the more specific Scrap Dragon-like effect.

Part of me wanted to have Shadow Spell work with it too. Though it IS a bit too strong. The only thing I'd be able to suggest would be making the search not a +1, but you did that on purpose. Also, I'm not too connected to the metagame this season. I know Shadolls well, I somewhat know Quills, and I know Necloths exist but have no idea how they work out specifically. Maybe the game has really gotten to this degree?

The other synergy pieces like Masked Chameleon and whatnot are just nice things. No complaints there.

I was thinking about it, and the Merc+Blast combo is actually a +2 considering that you first search the Trap for a +1, and then you pop it for the second +1. But still, I think the metagame can handle it.

Searching for Shadow Spell is a nice idea, since the artwork even has bluish chains and would fit this card's name and artwork, but the thing is that I don't know how to include it in the searching effect without making the card text too convoluted. Although I guess could simply add "Shadow Spell" specifically in the first effect.

And yeah, I would say things got quite ugly in the metagame: Shaddolls and Burning Abyss float upon destruction, and unless you destroy their Pendulum Spells you won't be able to stop Qliphorts. I suppose this Merc+Blast combo would have a chance vs. Qlips since you can pop their Pendulum Spells, but I don't think it would be that effective against the other 2 archetypes.

Thanks for your comment.
