The Game Awards are still fairly new, so I think we'll be seeing similar trends to what's been going on at the Golden Joysticks, which is a far larger awards ceremony of the year. Basically, if it goes anything like the Golden Joysticks, Witcher 3 will win, like, everything.

Only big shakeup is Undertale as it was released quite late into the year, but I do think that Ori and the Blind Forest is as deserving a winner as Undertale, which it shares a few categories with.

I don't play much when I really compare myself to most other's I've seen that do, so I can only really say I'd pick Super Mario Maker for both a similar reason as CowCow, and also because I've actually been playing it a lot despite those first 4 words I've said. So much to offer someone like me, who just wants to get in a play, as opposed to many other genres.

I consider Splatoon to be as such on a smaller scale for shooters, but I haven't actually played it.

Nintendo, unfortunately, doesn't win the GOTY awards from these sorts of things as much as it used to. Though it was hilarious since last year, Nintendo basically seemed to sponsor the whole event. Their presence there was massive. Reggie funking opened the show and basically got to make an advertising pitch. That, and most of the show, was cringeworthy, and the term "world premiere" will never be the same again. They also gave one of the biggest awards– Developer of the Year (won by Nintendo, actually)– offstage, which was dumb. The entertainment was lackluster, especially, although the Koji Kondo-Imagine Dragons thing was cool. Zelda gameplay demo was stupidly surprising. It'll be interesting to see if Nintendo does anything again this year as last year it basically acted as a counter to Sony's PlayStation experience the day after.

I do like that game journalists who are expected to play a whole lot of games do the nominating and voting rather than fan voting. Fan voting is dumb. If it were me, though, I'd also be stricter about the journalists and developers that I'm having vote on these games because it should really be made a privilege, so that they'll take the job seriously. But whatever, it's been pretty clear that they care more about attracting viewers and putting up big game "reveals" than the actual awards.

I put a lot into the rest of this post, please read it all.

Here's My Picks and What I Think is Going to Win (alongside some commentary, occasionally):

Game of the Year: Mario Maker | Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Developer of the Year: Kojima Productions (It got shut down. Kojima is almost guaranteed to win.)

Independent Game: Ori and the Blind Forest Undertale

Mobile Game: I didn't play any of these games. Fallout Shelter (I'm assuming people haven't played Downwell and people like Fallout. Also, did anyone else notice that the Nintendo game here is 3rd Party? That's crazy.)

Best Narrative: Apparently I don't like story. Life is Strange (I think this goes to either Life is Strange or Her Story.)

Best Score/Soundtrack: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (I called in helicopter support and started up Ride of the Valkyries. funking try and top that... WORDS THAT KILLLLLLL)

Best Performance: I don't have a clue.

Games for a Change: What's this category about again? I can't remember.

Best Sploosher: Splatoon (This game is the best thing to happen to this genre since the original Halo, so I'm going to be pretty disappointed when Destiny wins instead. I might be okay with Battlefront.)

Best Action-Adventure: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (To be honest, this is the MGSV vs Mario Maker year.)

Best Roleplaying Game: The fact that I don't really know is shocking to me. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (This or Fallout is only losing if Undertale shocks everything.)

Best Fighting Game: Rising Thunder (Anime fighting games aren't going to win this, sorry Guilty Gear.)

Best Family Game: Splatoon Mario Maker (I play and like Splatoon more, but no way Mario Maker loses this to anything else in the category.)

Best Sports/Racing Game: Mario Kart 8 DLC | Rocket League (If they're going to include the Taken King, then I demand Mario Kart's half-a-game DLC be included as well. Also Rocket League is fun.)

Best Multiplayer: Splatoon Rocket League (As I said, I really loved Splatoon, but Rocket League got really big.)

Best Art Direction: Ori and the Blind Forest (Why'd they even bother putting these other games in this category?)

Now for the awards that are easier to pick than your own nose, but not nearly as rewarding:

ESports Game of the Year: Ah yes, the "Which game has a bigger viewing audience?" award. I'm sure it's not League. Not at all.

Twitch Plays of the Year: Portal Stories: Mel | Twitch Plays: Dark Souls

Trending Gamer: Me Probably Markiplier (As long as it isn't Total Biscuit again.)

ESports Team of the Year: TSM! TSM! TSM! | The only one that won League worlds.

Esports Player of the Year: I didn't check who was nominated for this, but I'm just assuming they're going to give the award to Faker and I'm fairly disappointed that ZeRo wasn't nominated considering he's TSM sponsored and has only lost a single Smash 4 tournament since the game released.

Most Preordered Game: The Legend of Zelda Wii U is nominated for this, right? The Last Guardian

I'd personally like Sumail to win Esport player of the year, but he won't, in part because in this year he went from a literal nobody in the scene to be a world champion (He hadn't played a single game of competitive DOTA before this year) and a game defining set of mid-play. But I acknowledge Faker will instead because of relative playerbase sizes.

I still find Battlefront getting a nod weird given it isn't even out yet. And I hope Bloodborne wins best art direction. Also Mark Hamil for his role as the Joker because he was fantastic.

>Best Fighting Game
>Rise of the Incarnates

>A game I literally only heard of because some random 10 year old kiddies were playing it on this week's episode of Shuriken Sentai Ninninger

>A game that is SHUTTING DOWN FIVE MONTHS AFTER IT WAS RELEASED, ONE MONTH AFTER THE AIRING OF SAID EPISODE OF NINNINGER, AND LESS THAN TWO WEEKS AFTER THE RESULTS OF THE GAME AWARDS

  • 3 weeks later...

http://www.unilad.co.uk/gaming/game-of-the-year-announced-at-2015-video-game-awards/

I can't find any other link other than, urgh, Unilad. Anyway, Witcher 3 won the big one. If were expecting anything other than Wticher 3, then y'all silly.

Ori and the Blind Forest did get a win for Art Direction, which is much appreciated.

It's funny but I know Witcher is popular, yet I've never played it at all and don't even know what it looks like.

I know people were hyping Undertale, but I think Rocket League is a solid choice, really fun and interesting game.

Splatoon winning shooter makes me happy, that's pretty great.

Who's Greg Miller?

Nothing all too surprising here.

I wouldn't be surprised if the awards were skewed or bribed in some way, at this point, based on some of the results...

Which makes this response confusing. The results seems perfectly legit, what was it you thought was incorrect?

Well, for starters they probably haven't even played through a lot of the games that were nominated to the point where they can really experience all they have to offer, or at least most of it. Yes, Witcher 3 is great and deserves many of the slots, but they had many months to already lock in their vote for that, while more recent releases would not get the chance to compete against an already locked in vote. I'm more annoyed that they event included games that were close to the rewards being announced, yet the decisions were already made months ago.
