I am interested in what YCM thinks about this situation. My thoughts are simple. As a person who is vastly more non-white than white, I have the following things to say

1) Diversity for Diversity's sake isn't the correct approach

2) There IS a problem with "white washing" in that non-whites are given a 10th Amendment that everything not racially taken belongs to them. ie. By and Large, non-whites can only play "non-white roles" (yes exceptions like Finn do exist)

3) This is NOT the fault of the Oscars...SAY WHAT?

Looking at it logically, the Oscars have a selection to choose from, something griping, something impact, usually something that shows a human's raise and fall or vice versa. Now I'm not sure that there's too many non-white actors who played that part this year. The problem is not with the Oscars which have their arms tied, but rather hollywood directors which 10th in Whites in any and all roles they can otherwise find.

That being said, should David Oyelowo from Selma have gotten a nomination? Yeah. But the bigger problem lies with the base not the top.

Just my two cents, yes someone is gonna called me an ignorant model minority, but w/e discuss.

Diversity for Diversity's sake does make a difference in media when an opinion on a film changes completely from one person to the next. If everyone deciding the oscar nominations is white, then it's entirely possible that they have a hard time viewing a film from a mindset of someone who might not be white. And so they nominate the actors, actresses, directors and films that their opinions consider highly of– and if you think about who those nominations bring in to the academy, it follows that they'll share the same opinions on other films as the establishment already does. It's basically the same argument you can have for why certain types of films always get snubbed– except this is more easily remedied by knowing exactly the people to bring into the academy to allow for that diversity in nomination.

And it isn't exactly that the Oscar's have their arms tied. Yes, there's definitely an issue with diversity in hiring and stuff like that, but there was more than just the guy from Selma that got snubbed this year. Michael B Jordan for Best Actor and Ryan Coogler for Director for Creed, Mya Taylor for best Supperting Actress in Tangerine, Samuel L Jackson in Hateful Eight, and virtually anyone for Chi-Raq or Straight Outta Compton– the latter of which was the most obvious snub. There were definitely opportunities for at least one nomination here, especially with two open spots in the Best Picture category.

So it's a little more complicated than just "diversity for diversity's sake"
