Their mainly useful because they help to introduce western culture to animes and some, mainly bad ones, provide a few laughs. If 4Kids has any use it is this. To laugh at how badly they kill bad animes, this doesn't apply to the good ones, example One Piece. In the end they are only useful to get western kids to start watching them. After you find a few that you like, then you can move on to the subs. I only really watch dubs because I find it funny to see the changes they make to them. I hate having to read subtitles so I definitely won't go for the original japanese market of anime's or video games. The dubs aren't bad, but you have to remember, most of them are for the younger audiences. The rest you can usually find late at night on adult swim and they aren't hacked apart TOO badly. I prefer subs and manga though. they did kill one piece except funimation rescued it yay!
