The original thread, with Music 1-151
If you are looking at this thread then I presume you will have heard of our previous incarnation. Originally thought up by Dark, the VGMStation (clever title pun, no?) was very successful. It had 900+ replies and over 9000 thread views. Then Dark decided that owning it would be too much trouble and decided to pass it down to me. I hope that the VGMStation Mark II will be just as successful as the original!

You want music showcased here? All you have to do is post the link and a little note saying why you think it should be added (please note: for the Your Request section you should have a description with at least 3 sentences, please). It is optional but encouraged to include a suggestion of which channel your chosen piece should fit in, though your choice of channel may indeed be changed for the purposes of personal opinion or just to keep the channels balanced.
Final Battle from Super Mario Galaxy 2

Though this really should go in Warning! Challenger Approaching, I feel that this thread should get off to a strong, powerful start. And with this piece it does. Wonderfully orchestrated and masterfully composed. The intro and overture are some of the best in gaming, with dramatic trumpet fanfares and booming choirs raging in the background. What a piece to start with.

Main Theme from Professor Layton and the Unwound Future

This is one hell of a find for me. I was looking for music from the Fluffy Buff Galaxy so I went to TimmyTurnersDad's channel, home of HD versions of the Galaxy soundtrack. Upon opening it I came across this. I looking for song and then stopped and listened. This song is utterly fantastic - it sounds like it would be played in a dance hall. I thought how brilliant - what a song. It's twisting, turning, almost like a tango song. And then suddenly I heard that wonderful Jazz piano solo - oh! What an absolute masterpiece.

Town from The Legend of Zelda - Spirit Tracks

It has such a wonderful intro. After that we're treated a combination of two classic Zelda instruments - the acoustic guitar and the flute, beautiful in an upbeat, jazzy harmony. It's sadly a short theme, but it manages to seem so much longer. It's an extremely catchy piece and another fantastic song from the Zelda franchise. A pat on the back for Nintendo again.

The Goddess' Rebuke from Fire Emblem - Radiant Dawn

I must say, I spent 25 minutes listening to Shradow's stupid request spree. All of the songs on it were generic battle fluff, until suddenly, the last theme I discover turns out to be pretty good. It's not fantastic, but the magical, gentle flute hovering over the beautiful orchestral background as the Taiko drum beats in the background...it's breathtaking.

Reset (Thank You) from Okami

Absolutely beautiful. Okami has some of the greatest pieces of Video Game Music ever composed, and this is without a doubt my favourite of them all. The elegant, airy flute, swimming through beautiful major to minor harmonies. This piece has such a wonderful traditional Japanese feel to it, like of the other pieces of Okami music. It's beautifully orchestrated, and so emotional. An absolutely wonderful piece that I'm sure will bring a tear to the eye of many Okami fans out there. Here's hoping for a remix of this in Okamiden.

Ragtime Osohe from Mother 3

Twig, I'm sorry, but Fate didn't get in. But on the related video links I found this. It's a wonderfully upbeat little rag piece that really made my day. It's solo piano (OMGEARGASM) and it's Jazz. Thank you Twig.

Gerudo Valley from The Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time

This song has such a simple melody, yet it is almost addictive to listen to. It has a wonderfully Spanish feel to it and that guitar is so elegant. One of Ocarina's finest pieces and another great effort from the Zelda franchise.

Main Theme from Shenmue

This piece has a traditional Japanese feel to it and it's absolutely fantastic. It has a beautiful, sombre melody and the fiddle (I think it might be an Erhu) is wonderful to listen to. Clair knows what she's talking about.

Lunacry from Cel Damage

That drum kick at the beginning is absolutely infectious. This may not be a very original or emotional song, but it rocks your ass off with ease. Jesus, I'm humming it now. Send all complaints about it's catchiness to Clair.
Eterna Forest from Pokemon Diamond & Pearl

Click the link and nod sagely at the top voted comment "This music is so calm". And indeed it is, a melancholy piano supporting a single noble flute as it smoothly works it's way through a beautiful melody. Another fantastic Pokemon piece...no wonder they deserve their own channel.

Surfing Theme from Pokemon Gold & Silver

A tragically short theme. Out of so many Pokemon pieces over the years, this one has without a doubt one of the most beautiful melodies of all. The fact that I implementing the melody in a piece that I composing for my Music class assignment speaks volumes about it's timeless beauty and wonderful simplicity. This piece reminds me of the days when all Pokemon were the same, no natures or EVs, just good old fashioned battling - you knew that whatever wild Pokemon you caught, they'd always grow strong. A beautiful, timeless classic.

National Park from Pokemon HeartGold & SoulSilver

This is for you Dark. I won't go into detail about how wonderfully arranged it is, I'll just let you hear for yourself how wonderful Piano themes can be. And if you don't like Piano, then go to 1:16 and listen to that Guitar theme remix.

Ecruteak & Cianwood City from Pokemon Gold & Silver

I specifically chose a youtube video that was sounded more like it was recorded off of a real Game Boy for nostalgia. I think that Gold & Silver had the best music of all the Pokemon generations, and this piece has such a beautiful melody. I adore the Pokemon games and I adore the music even more - this song makes me think about how beautiful it was when I was young and I sat in my room, letting this masterpiece soak into my brain. Fantastic.

Canalave City from Pokemon Diamond, Pearl & Platinum

Another beautiful piano piece courtesy of the second most successful video game franchise on Earth. It's light, it's moving and oh so beautiful to listen to. It's melody is expressive and melancholy, the bassline powerful and harmonic - it's a truly wonderful piece and one I really wish that I had found myself. Thank you Brickfist - you're awesome.

Cinnabar Island from Pokemon HeartGold & SoulSilver

This is a remix of the melody of the original Cinnabar Island theme. Just a year after Red saved Kanto from the evil Team Rocket and became Pokemon Champion of the Kanto region, Cinnabar volcano erupted, destroying the island completely. Everyone was evacuated safely, but sadly the entire city was destroyed. Blaine had to relocate his Gym to the Seafoam Islands, the former residents of Cinnabar Island forced to find new homes and jobs. Everything was gone. This piece tells this story in a subtle, melancholy way that brings a tear to my eye even now.

Lavender Town (Original Japanese Theme) from Pokemon Red & Green (JP)

This is a piece that needs no introduction - it's the most terrifying piece of Video Game Music ever. Sleep tight, and may the Marowaks haunt your dreams.

Background Music 1 from Silver Surfer

Although it came from an almost unplayably hard game (AVGN's review of it is fantastically swearing), this proves the lengths that 8bit generation composers went to compensate for the fairly low level sound chips they had. A thundering, bluesy bassline powers through the song, building up a dramatic edge, while the entire song is a flurry of swirling notes and blazing harmonies. Fantastic.

Dark World from The Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past

Though there are only about 5 or so instruments in this song, it really sounds fantastic. It's an upbeat yet slightly dark melody, a wonderful fanfare feel and it's catchy, especially the intro. A great piece of SNES era music and another fantastic piece from the Zelda franchise.

Intro Theme from Megaman 3

It's powerful, bluesy and melancholy. I think that out of all of the various sound chips used over the years in the compostion of Video Game Music, I think the the Famicom (NES) 8bit sound chip was the greatest of them all. I spent a good fortnight or so transcribing this by ear and I must say, it was well and truly worth it. One of the 8bit generation's finest short pieces and one of the best ever from the Megaman series.

Solar Man from Megaman 10

0-Chill has his flashes of genius, and this is definitely one of them. I'm downloaded MM10 the second it came out and it's soundtrack was even better than MM9's. Along with the Wily Stage 1 theme, this one really caught my eye (or ear). It's powerful, thundering and moody, as that awesome bassline pumps it's way up to the almost alarm-like melody. Then there's that epic call and response thing with the arrpeggiated second melody and the alarm-like Square Wave. Awesome.

Main Theme from Cheetahmen II

What is it with terrible NES games and awesome soundtracks? Silver Surfer, Friday the 13th, and now this? It's not ground-breaking or original, but it's so damn catchy that I couldn't help but add it. Hopefully that stupid melody will get out of my head soon...

Cabin from Friday the 13th

Another case of terrible game, great soundtrack. This piece is damn terrifying - those ambient, creepy leads and that subtle bassline that gets under your skin - the 8bit soundchip is fantastic at getting a good "feel" out of it's music. It's definitely not a ground-breaking piece (like Cheetahmen) but it's very good at what it's supposed to do - be scary. Also "Quick, run before Jason attacks you with his giant toothbrush!"

Tal Tal Heights from The Legend of Zelda - Link's Awakening

Pretty much every theme in Zelda history either quotes the Main Theme/Overworld from the first game or is a flat-out remix of it. At the beginning this sounds like another revamp, but then it flies into a catchy little melody of it's own. Awakening is a criminally ignored game, especially for music, and this proves just how fantastic it's music can be. I urge you to listen to more Awakening stuff.
Flash in the Dark (Official Arranged Soundtrack) from Megaman 9

The original version will without a doubt be added come the next update for Tune Nostalgia, but let's focus on this. It's different, but so beautifully, refreshing different. By a long, LONG way the most emotional piece of VGM ever composed. I discovered the MM9 AST whilst looking for help on how to complete the game (bloody Wily Stage 3) and it blew me away. Sure enough, there are a couple of stinkers in there but when I clicked the link to arrangement of Flash in the Dark I wasn't expecting much. A great 8-bit piece, yes, but I was worried after what happened to Jewel Man AST and wondering if it would survive the arduous transition to a real instrument arrangement. And by God it did - it's different, but in the kind of way that makes you feel glad to be alive, like when Cadbury's release a new bar or I find out that Oatmeal & Raisin cookies are better then normal ones. It's slowed down to a far slower tempo and does that old video game music trick - instruments in one by one. It's beautiful - it's emotional, valiant and has an almost saddening edge to it. This is funeral music. And don't even get me started on the fantastic guitar solo near the end - so lovingly transcribed...it's VGM gold.

Overworld from New Super Mario Bros. 2 (Fanmade game)

It's a fantastically composed piece. Although I'm not a fan of the Synth String parts, I soon forgot them entirely - it's melody is upbeat, bluesy and utterly captivating. Although it doesn't feel completely real, it's still a fantastic piece. And also, please listen to it from about 3:00 and you'll that the melody not only becomes faster, but it's also transposed, making it sound even more beautiful. And don't forget that wonderful nod to 8bit!

Abandoned Memory (Official Arranged Soundtrack) from Megaman 10

The Megaman 9 AST is far superior in terms of consistency than the only recently released Megaman 10 AST, but my God does the MM10 AST have some great songs. Abandoned Memory (Wily Stage 1) was the best theme of Megaman 10 and like it's cousin, Flash In The Dark, really makes a great transition to real instruments. Fantastic song with a great build-up.

Wily Machine (Official Arranged Soundtrack) from Megaman 10

As soon as you open the Youtube page, go straight to 2:01 in the song, as that's when the Wily Machine song starts. It starts with the original NES intro, then it flies into a fantastic series of Jazz solos, starting with an Alto Sax, then moving onto a truly fantastic and incredibly hard to transcribe Piano solo. This piece manages to transcend several genres, with the Metal guitar, the 8bit intro, and electro beat near the end and the best of them all, fantastic, pure Jazz. One hell of a piece.

Boss Theme/Culex Battle (Mario Paint Composer) from Final Fantasy IV and Super Mario RPG - Legend of the Seven Stars

Uematsu is one of the greatest video games of all time and we have already had some of his masterworks listed at the VGMStation (Zanarkand was our first ever piece!), so it's only fitting that I should choose one of the greatest boss themes to go here too. But wait - I wasn't satisfied with the SMRPG or the DS versions, so I thought that should add this fantastic MPC remix instead.

Koopa Bros. (GXSCC Remix) from Paper Mario

This song is funky. The first thing I noticed the the catchy, thumping drums - then came the bluesy lead and the classic 12-bar Blues progression. Last but definitely not least was the slightly drowned out solo lead during the awesome 12-bar, constantly blasting out jazzy solos. Epic. Although GXSCC (the program used to make a lot of the "8-bit" remixes on Youtube) doesn't actually make proper 8bit music (it only emulates the SCC sound chip, though there is a setting on the program to make it a more Famicom-style soundfont), it still sounds great. So get listening to another funkadelic track here the VGMStation Mark II. Yeah.

Bowser Fight from Yoshi's Island

This song taunts you at the beginning with a slow tempo and a build up as the shadow of Big Bad Baby Bowser marches towards you from a distance. Then it rockets to a screaming, powerful, 3 minute rock solo. It's the VGM equivalent of a Michael Bay movie - a white knuckle thrill ride that grabs you by the neck and won't let go 'til it's over. This is a song that really deserves a second post.

Battle at the Big Bridge (Battle with Gilgamesh) from Final Fantasy Fables - Chocobo Tales

I chose this version of the song rather than the original because it sounds so much better. The crazy arpeggios at the beginning, the blazing trumpet melody, and aahing choirs, this entire piece just screams FANTASTIC BOSS THEME right into your eardrums until they explode due to overcontamination with pure awesomeness. And let's not forget: "Enough expository banter, now we fight like men, and ladies, and ladies who dress like men! For Gilgamesh... It's morphing time!"

Giygas Battle from Earthbound

It's absolutely terrifying. Originally I was saving this piece as a Halloween special but I couldn't resist posting it sooner. It's a psychotic, borderline suicide inducing mix of breathing, white noise and a melancholy vibraphone (2:30). Breathtaking. This piece is definitely the most scary piece of video game music ever composed. Kudos to the composers.

Saber's Edge from Final Fantasy XIII

Another example of how awesome piano is. This piece has such a wonderfully dramatic build, the piano belting out a discordant stream of notes as the other instrument gradually sforzando upwards. Then there is 2:04-2:20. Fantastic.

Final Battle from Mario & Luigi - Bowser's Inside Story

You can tell right from the beginning that is a boss theme - those crazy string arpeggios, the booming chords - it's very genre-savvy. It's a very well composed piece and another Mario classic in the making - great game too.

Subboss Theme from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Modern 8bit music doesn't get much better than this. Scott Pilgrim was a love letter to video game fans everywhere, with it's Zelda fanfares and constant references to games from the days of yore (AKA - 30 or so years ago). This song is over the top, powerful and head-bangingly awesome in every single way. This is for Scott Pilgrim fans everywhere - both the film and the game are fantastic.
Heat of Battle from Final Fantasy - Mystic Quest
Mystic Quest is oftentimes looked at as one of the most underrated Final Fantasy games of all time. People claimed it was too easy, and it was supposed to be. Mystic Quest's obscurity is a real shame, for not many people heard its awesome soundtrack as a result. The one tune that specifically stood out to me was this piece, not a very fast track, but driving nonetheless. The SNES guitar sounds awesome for its time, and you can hear other 8-bit tones supply the melody throughout the piece. While I was listening to this track, I kept doing double-takes. Was this really on the Super Nintendo? With its shrill guitar and classic instruments, I believe that this song deserves a place in this thread. And guess what? This was only the track that played when you battled normal enemies. Incredible.
This song also struck me as being similar to the Wily Stage 1 theme from Megaman 10.

Final Boss Riku from Kingdom Hearts - 358/2 Days
This song sounds amazing, considering the game itself was released on the DS. It commences with a mournful piano prelude, and then the orchestra kicks in, rapidly increasing the pace of the piece, and the awesomeness factor. Throughout the piece however, you can still hear the piano belting out mournful chords, keeping a sad overtone to this track. This song really has excellent, full orchestration, upholding the quality of all Kingdom Hearts music with ease. I really like how this song is tinged with sadness, and how it just explodes into a frenzy of instruments periodically. Please take a listen. ^^

The Ultimate Show from Super Paper Mario
For a cheery game like this, this seems kinda', "Dark", if you will. Come on, the combination of Dimenito, Luigi, AND the Chaos Heart for a final boss is pretty dark, and even when you defeat him the word's still gonna' end in swirly death.

Select from Spiderman / X-Men - Arcade's Revenge
This has got to be the funkiest music I have ever heard. Don't get me wrong, I think this game sucked. However, sometimes I would just stay at the Select screen and let the funk twist my brains. The bass and psudo-orchestration help contribute to the groove of this tune, and I think that this piece is made all the more epic when you consider that it was on the EFFING SNES. Magical, just magical. My head was bobbing through the entire piece, I can assure you that much. ;D
Healing from Prince of Persia
This piece reminds me of "Reset" from Okami, in the fact that it starts off soft and melts into a beautiful symphony of instruments. Everything feels so genuine. As I listen to this track, I picture myself in a beautiful meadow with rushing streams, the sun shining brightly over my head. It sounds cheesy, but that's how I feel, enlightened and awestruck. The flute is beautiful and free, and the low instruments contribute to many a climax in this piece. I think, above all, that this piece is very peaceful. This track sets a new standard for modern music, and I hope you enjoy listening to it.

I definitely like how RR and Conversion are one, they didn't belong seperate from the beginning.

Two things; one, there is no Yourequest Channel. I'd assume that you didn't want it, but you also mentioned in the opening that we could post requests for Yourequest. You may want to fix either.

Also, I suggest you remove the dates, since you opened this thread after all of those dates. And honestly, they're pretty useless nonetheless. Just a suggestion, of course.

Also, amazing timing as well. I'm just about to end my version of the thread. Don't bother with the formalities, I'll PM Opalmoon and she'll hopefully lock mine and stick this asap.

If Yourequest is still open, I need to beat Clair to the punch. =)

YOUREQUEST.

Portal: Still Alive

I've been trying to get this in for a while now. In case you've never played Portal, the idea behind it is that you are in the Lab of Aperture Science, and you were chosen for experimentation. After you make it through quite a few sadistic trials, you finally get to meet the infamous GLaDOS. A talking sequence begins, and during it, you knock out GLaDOS' 'Morality' core, thus causing her to spread toxic gas across the chamber. Once she's beaten, a wonderful ending credits song starts, sung by our dear GLaDOS herself. Or maybe it's the Companion Cube. ;D

Also, for Remix Revamp.

"You won't believe how bubbly and happy this song is. I actually went through the trouble of putting it as my ringtone. We all remember this nostalgic tune from when we first started to play SMB3, and it really is an amazing track. Sure, it loops over and over, but that's the fun of it. The actual composition of the song sounds very nice as a finished product, and I could listen to this song for hours while searching where the two Whistles are. If this doesn't bring back nostalgic memories or make you smile, I don't know what will. =P"

"For once, I didn't choose the Piano Collection song of a FF song to request. I do feel this song sounds better in its natural state, although I do love my piano tracks. The actual beat starts picking up at around 0:28, so definitely listen for at least that long if you don't like the starting beat. I definitely feel a Cowboy-esque feeling from this song, just something that'd play in a bar in an Old-West movie. The instruments in this song are well used to create a flowing sound that turned into a beautiful piece. If anything, FF7 is one of the leaders in FF music, if not gameplay."

"This is one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite games. My emotions are summarized as follows: happy that I beat the game, sad that the ending scene is put forth. The ending scene is really bittersweet: you see all the places Mario went in his adventure, but his adventure is now over. If you've played this game as extensively as I did, this song elicits such emotion from you. It brings back all the memories of this game, almost all of them being happy, with the exception of some 100-Coin Stars. Nintendo really went above and beyond on this Credits theme, or at least that's how I feel."

Usually when I request, it'll be a lot of songs at once, so don't feel overwhelmed. Eventually I'll run out of fuel, in this case meaning songs I know of. =)

Ahahaha.

I really hope I get YR again, if you decide to make it. I can request a huge variety of songs. <3

Shatter - Kinetic Harvest (General/Yourrequest)

This song is what modern video game music should strive to be. The track maintains the calm, ambient theme that Shatter revels in. Notice how long this track is. This is not just a continuous looping melody. This is a composition, a modern work of art. The beat has a nice groove, and the arpeggios towards the beginning of the piece made me cheer (mentally of course). Everything just feels so perfectly placed. It is still a very calming beat, which is odd considering that the whole piece has a driving, heavy bass undertone. If you ask me, this is what modern video game music should be. This is one of the few instances where one can say that video game compositions get better with age. I highly encourage you listen to this electronic beat-infused piece.

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest - Heat of Battle (Tune Nostalgia/Warning! Challenger Approaching!/Yourrequest)

Incredible.

Oh, I forgot to mention. If you are keeping channel owners (which you should, for reasons I stated in the PM), one person cannot be an owner of more than one channel. So I can't request five million songs and own every channel. That's no fair. That didn't really come up in the other thread, since you had people trying to get an obvious channel. Like 0-Chill with WCA. :]

"A lot of people don't like FF13 for some odd reason. I don't really play FF games, but this music is definitely some of the best I've heard from FF. The violin is obviously one of the major selling points of the song in general. If this song was played every time I battled, I'd get pumped up in an instant. You can feel a dramatic aura coming from the song, no question. Compared to other FF battle themes, this one really is high up there. For some reason, I just cannot stop coming back to this song whenever I need something to pump me up. Perfectly suitable for a battle theme, of course."

I dunno... I guess that's where it would go. I haven't made a request before... but that theme is positively awesome (even though we can't compare it to the original just yet).

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World - Anthem (General/Yourrequest)

I was recently checking out the VGM from this game, and I was completely blown away. This piece combines the old retro bleeps of the NES with modern day mixing technology to make this song my new favorite. I was completely blown away at the NES-esque beginning, which sounded like something straight from the '80's. However, one the guitars and drums kicked in, I was utterly overtaken with a happy shock. I really love how this piece manages to capture the essence of an NES track, and maintain it all the way through the song. This track is incredible, and I cannot stop listening to it. It's a pretty cool theme song, no? ;D

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days - Final Boss Riku (Warning! Challenger Approaching!/Yourrequest)
