Odin, Father of the Aesir

Recommended Posts

Wasn't the original name "Polar God Sacred Emperor Odin"?

This card is awesome. Vanadis made it so much easier to bring out. 4000 ATK is awesome, immunity to S/Ts lets for some sick combos with Dark Hole and just relative safety from opposing S/Ts. Nordic Beasts make it pretty easy to bring out the Synchro requirements "just add Vanadis".

Every time I or my opponent has dropped this, there has been a BTH waiting. Without exception.

*Still prefers the Name "Polar Star Saint God Odin"*

Well, from the name "Kyokushinseitei Odin", I suppose a very bad translator could mishear "saint" from "seitei". But even I can piece out "sacred emperor" so that must have been a seriously s***ty subber...

Why is the title not "Odin, Padre de los Aesir"

Anyways, the frequency of this thing being summoned mainly depends on the amount of Vanadis one is running. Now Vanadis is certainly not a card to run 3 of, so logically this card doesn't show up that often. Additionally, every competitive deck has an out to this card, because every competitive deck can either easily summon Brionac, or play Caius, or play Bottomless Trap Hole. On top of that, in order to summon Odin, you have to use up a large portion of your resources. This involves devoting your Normal Summon to Odin, and really, I find that in order to make the most out of your plays in Nordics, your Normal Summon/Set and what you already have on the field both need to produce their own result, instead of in this case where you're blending in Vanadis to your field for one synchro instead of making a Level 7 and keeping materials out for another Level 7 or just Setting a monster. Conserving your Normal Summon/Set lets you continue your chain of plusses while summoning Odin leads to a dead end. Nonetheless, this dead end could be beneficial to you, since you might need to summon Odin to make a giant push or win the game, but summoning a pair of Level 7's or making a Level 7 and setting a monster is much better.

Honestly, if I were tight on extra deck space, I'd take out Odin for something more important, since you can summon Thor much easier, and Thor gets over Catastor/rapes Treeborn and faceup recruiters. Having 500 more ATK doesn't matter too much, because there aren't any good monsters that are in that gap anyway.

I think I only ever summoned Loki once, and just for the hell of it. I use it for Odin, obviously, or Thor if I really want Thor but don't have Guldfaxe. Considering Guld and Vanadis are both level 4 (although Vanadis can be level 3 if I really wanted it to be), I'm not forced to make weird plays to get the right level combination.

If you're summoning Black Rose while using your normal summon you're doing it wrong.

You're right! Clearly me using Vanadis means I always use a Normal Summon when I'm desperate enough to nuke the field, and every instance that I did need a Normal Summon to Synch for 7, I'm using Black Rose Dragon wrong. Instead of merely not having a Defense Position Tanngnjostr at that exact moment.
