Great Unclean One: VK
Thinking of picking up astronomy. What is YCM-kun's thoughts on astronomy? Any amateur astronomers here to give me any tips or insights?
CMRenji
I plan on becoming an Astronomer when I get older, I love it so much. I also believe in extraterrestrial life(another reason I love it), and I one day hope to help scientists explore Europa for Extraterrestrial lifeforms. Northern Sage
With the universe being as large as it is, I am positive there are some other life forms out there. Hadn't they discovered something about that recently?
Shradow
You hear about Pluto? That's messed up. Haven't they found a planet like Earth that can sustain human life, it's just 20 light years away? And with a universe that is infinite and ever-growing, if there's no intelligent life besides us out there, something's wrong. Mors Secundis
Hey, I think My insight would be well placed here, I did astronomy as a course through school. got an A, so I think I did pretty well. the only things I can say is try not to spend too much money on a really expensive telescope, because, and I know I say this harshly, you probably won't discover anything new :/ But I so, so much fun doing it and I still whip out the binoculars every now annd then just to take a Look at Ursa major, or The orion nebula(which I don't think is visible during winter, mind), Its really fun and taking it up won't go amiss when it comes to getting Jobs and all that. Other thing is you need to learn about Magnitude of stars, the name/rating system of them and all that also how to distinuguish a planet from a star. If you need any help or anything be sure to PM me alright
You hear about Pluto? That's messed up.
Pluto as in it has been able to sustain never seen before Bacterium or the fact it's not classed as a planet anymore? x3 Yeah, they found a planet called planet X, it's exo-solar though which means its not technically party od our solar system but orbits near enough for us to see it ever 20 years. what they mean by ever growing is eerything is moving away from the SDP (the super deep point OR start of everything) so actually as it grows the chance of spotting other life forms gets less and less. Cin
I wanted to do Astronomy at degree level, but the school job adviser didn't know what A Levels I would need to do. I did Physics, Chemistry and Maths at AS, hard as anything, but if you're a wizz at Maths it's not too hard. (Annoyingly that would probably rule out doing anything about Volcanoes and Earthquakes, which is a shame, because I enjoy learning about them.) Too much light pollution here for a telescope to be much use.
Legend Zero
I'm interested, but have no clue what I'm looking at when stargazing. I do plan on taking intro to Astronomy next year. Did you hear about the neutrino being faster than light? Turns out it might be wrong. DX http://www.chicagotribune.com/site/newspaper/news/sc-nw-1122-speed-of-light-20111122,0,6218959.story But if it was true, then the universe would've been expanding at the rate of neutrinos, not light, so part of our universe would've been pure darkness. Oh well.

If Neutrinos are faster than light E=mc^2 Is gonna have to be re-written therefore Changing the whole history of science its self. I really hope its right though, because I love when stuff like this happens.
J-Max
Learning to predict the future with the Stars has always fascinated me. Also used to love Stargazing as a kid (I went out the other night and laid on a Blanket outside to watch the stars. So peaceful.

Add a bit of science and you've got your predictions, mine are usually true as well.

I didn't know about the reward for disproving, though. Team YCM Research, GO! I kinda wish my high school had a astronomy club, but our school got the wood shop while the other high school got the planetarium. @.@

But I guess it worked out well for me; my school was funded for a new gym and football field. The other school got more science related stuff, I'm cool with it though because I got into body-building soon after my school was funded for it. Flinsbon
I'm currently a freshman majoring in physics with minor in astronomy. It's really interesting, but you rly do need to like math and physics cause thats like all it is. The first week of Astronomy was "This is F = Gm1m2/r^2. Most of this class will use some form of that equation." Oh and that planet 20 ly away is called Gliese 581 g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gliese_581g Btw the universe cannot be expanding and infinite. Those 2 claims are mutually exclusive. It's expanding, but not infinite.
