Did they just name it the opposite of what it was originally named?

It makes no sense.
Marauding Captain was Gagagigo's friend, until Gagagigo was brainwhashed and turned into Giga Gagagigo, and then Gogiga Gagagigo.

If anything, it'd be "Memory of a Comrade.

OT:
Sounds interesting.
I can't say it even replaces Dimensional Prison, since you still take damage and Xyz monsters attacking will come back without ammo.

It is a +1, though the cost is hefty and stealing an Xyz Monster will usually be pointless.

There really isn't a cost associated with it if your opponent is attacking directly, and it can also serve to keep a monster you need on the field for a turn. In a slower format, this card is the balls. Which reminds me... Great for Chance Format.

The wiki says:
This card's name in Kanji is written as "好敵手の記憶", which means "Memory of a Rival"; however, the Kana is written as "とものきおく", which means "Memory of an Adversary", implying the complicated relationships that the characters in this card's artwork have with each other.
And to make things more complicated, the wiki lists the card's translated name as "Memory of a Friend".

Given the context of the card, "rival" would probably have been a better choice, since rival implies both "friend" and "adversary". But I'm sure Konami knows best.
That last bit was sarcasm.
