Genetic Disorders

So lately I've been discovering some new friends and people I know have some genetic disorders. My friend has Aspergers, his sister has Down Syndrome, and my other friend has triplet brothers who all have autism. It is interesting how they are personally and how they deal with those experiences. Do you know someone who has a genetic disorder, or basically is medically conditioned/treated?

My brother has been diagnosed with mitochondrial myopathy and has array of other problems, one of them being severe GI problems, which has forced our hands and he has had to get a feeding tube. I don't think anyone can really understand how unique and yet normal, people with these kinds of conditions are. They aren't invalids, they aren't incapable. I am astounded every day by what people do with the hand they are given.

Personally, I had a hole in my heart for 14 years(went undiscovered for like 13 years), and I was incredibly sick. Just last year I got it patched up and now I am, more or less, good as new. I just wish that every medical condition could be so easily solved.

I have quite a few, but they're only mild. xD The main things that've affected me are Mild Aspergers and Chronic Insomnia, the later being fricking awful, but I dont really think it's a genetic thing. My family has a history of bad sleeping, but my Insomnia's quite a bit worse than anyone else in my family's had.

I've also had trouble with my Circulation recently, and discovered that I've got mild Pectus Excavatum - or a concaved chest - which we think might have something to do with(Knocked heart askew or something like that). Nothing quite as badass as a hole though. xD

My grandad had quite a horrible Genetic disease that did multiple things such as kill off one of his lungs, make his bones incredibly brittle and prone to breakage and ultimately made it impossible to walk or eat for the last 2-3 years of his life. And yet he still didn't miss a single day of work for 30 years, continuing his work until he was forced to leave due to being crippled. Luckily, my side of the family seems to have avoided it, but my cousin seems to have a minor version that we're a bit worried about.

(O_o) Everyone has or knows of people who have these conditions, are they really common? I don't really have like this and neither does anyone in my extended family.

Mental ones are surprisingly common and well hidden. We didn't know I had Aspergers until I was about 14; after having moved schools multiple times due to things linked to the disorder.

Aspergers occurs in 1 out of 100 people, so it's actually quite common. It's often just rather mild though. Personally, I only really struggle with about half of the things serious Asperger sufferers do.

Unless you've got a perfect family, there are likely to be some. They'll just be undiagnosed or very subtle. Diabetes and stuff count, heart disease can be linked, common things like that.

Well, I have high functioning aspergers so I felt like I should post.

But anyway, I know a guy who has Aspergers, which basically just makes it hard for him to read social cues and follow conversations.

Not in everyone, but that's one of the general things in that most people with ASD suck at talking to people.

It's different for everyone though. I dont really -suck- at talking to people, I just struggle taking hints, am a really bad judge of character and often say the wrong thing at the wrong time. There's also the annoying habit of standing too close to someone without realising. >_> It isn't good.

I can't credibly speak as to whether homosexuality is genetic or not. I'd look into it if I thought it to be a matter of any importance whatsoever, but I don't. What I do know, however, is that it's no disorder. Conversely, reinforcing negative stigma towards homosexuals for being homosexual demonstrates a lack of empathy for fellow human beings, the defining chracteristic of narcissistic personality disorder.

To play the obligatory skeptic card, Asperger's is also one of those things that people claim a lot to excuse poor social behavior. |:

As for me, I don't have anything, but one of my cousins has Wilson's, which is caused by too much copper building up in the body's tissues. It causes mild mental problems and spasms, but otherwise she's a really sweet girl. She's gonna do well in life. :'3

I have it diagnosed though, so yeah :/

Either way, I'm gonna say that while some things that come with Genetic 'Disorders' are annoying/harmful, sometimes they can have their upsides...

sometimes.
