Swift Hippo Dynatherium

You can Special Summon this card (from your hand). When you do: Your opponent can target 1 Level 4 monster in either player's Graveyard; your opponent Special Summons that target to their side of the field. You can only Special Summon "Swift Hippo Dynatherium" once per turn this way.

At first glance, this card looks mediocre. It's a -1 SS from the hand that may result in your opponent grabbing a valuable combo piece from the Graveyard. It's stats are totally average, to boot.

But let's take a closer look at the card.

  • Yes, it's a -1, but if you're using this you probably don't actually care. It's like One Day of Peace in its -1, except it's a less powerful form of + for the opponent unless they're running R4/Synchrocentric. This is more real this format, but think of it as a general choice, not a specific format one, akin to Fiendish/Breakthrough/Veiler in that they're all choices with different niches of the same basic niche.
  • Extremely potent T1, meaning you can set up however you need in a similar sense to Kagetokage/Photon Thrasher. The pros on Kagetokage and Thrasher is the freedom of dropping it, and the pro it has on Kagetokage as well is its ability to dodge Maxx "C" until after it's SSd, provided they don't drop it preemptively. In which case they probably -1'd themselves in fear and you have 1 less Maxx "C" to worry about later.
  • It's a WIND Beast, making it both Lightning Chidori fodder that's easy to drop and all around Diamond Dire Wolf fodder.

So, taking these factors into account, what 1 deck would really appreciate what it has to offer? Heraldic Beasts.

Anything your opponent revives from your Grave is either gonna be inconsequential or Leo, 9/10. From their grave, doesn't really matter most times. Lightning Chidori is a card. You might restock your opponent's deck (or your own if they revive from you), but you're forcing them to dead draw most likely, while clearing another card from the field. If you don't want to Chidori, you can easily just make an Xyz instead to beat over it/remove it in other ways (See: Dire Wolf, 50, 101 if they revive a combo piece in atk, Exciton Knight because remember that it's a -1 if they revive, Papilloperative if you must). The SS is also an effect that targets the monster in the grave, so if you have, say, Call of the Haunted when they target your monster, you can proceed to not care what they targetted.

Hint, it's not going to be Leo unless your opponent is a box of rocks.

The cons it has is that it's not searchable like Kagetokage, meaning you'd be trading in powerful King of the Feral Imps plays for a much more versatile card that supports the deck more, and that it is probably only marginally better as a topdeck than Kagetokage and much worse of one than Thrasher, provided you don't have a mon. It's definitely better than Thrasher in Heraldics, though, and this is mostly theory.

If this is shit, then everyone who played that one lvl 3 dino in Wind-Ups during the hand loop format are idiots.

It's not even a hippo, it's a rhino. And Dynatherium is the name of an extinct species of elephant. Wtf Konami?!

I don't see a horn on there, don't know how it's a rhino :/

OT: Eh, the card is kinda risky IMO. I wouldn't use it, but hey, since when am I the expert on optimal plays in Yugioh? Lol

Obv it's an elephant with a tiny trunk.

And the people that used it in Wind-Up Loop were the OCG Players that didn't have shark. In the bad loop-up build.

And everyone in TCG pre-Shark.

Then Shark came out and Gila was outclassed. But even then, people used it before because it was the most consistent way to pull it off by my memory.

I never really considered this card bad, just gimmicky. Although, I like the insight you supplied the OP with, Black. That aside, wouldn't you consider Chidori to be more of a better end of the trade-off, in the whole exchanging of Feral? I mean, Feral is a beater, yes, but Chidora also potentially wrecks the opponent's field.

It's wearing Kamina's glasses. It CLEARLY kicked logic to the curb because it became the impossible.

Shark was released at the same time as Zenmaity in the TCG.

Wind-Up Loop in the OCG was terrible. It was still worse than regular wind-ups TCG side, but people didn't realize HOW good wind-ups were until the next format.

So yeah, Gilasaurus has never been relevant in modern Yugioh, if ever. If this wasn't WIND (or LIGHT), I'd say it was pretty insanely awful, too.

You already run 2-3 Chidori in Heraldics, so it's not really a trade-off, just opens an extra slot or two for more options.

You actually could, literally, just run straight up 3 Chidoris because it opens up said space.
I mean, why not? If it's an open space in the Extra Deck for anything; Just run multiples of the cool guys =D

Expanding on a point in the OP with more dynatherie-oh.

As I said, when your opponent revives something, you will be able to create an answer to it. But given this card's level and attribute, it creates a bit of a mind game for the opponent in the gamestate, and if you summon this before revealing what else you have in hand to combo with, it's even more potent. (Side Note: You won't always want to drop it first, because of the fact that you can use it later to keep the opp from outplaying whatever you NS in certain situations)

Summon the monster in ATK? Number 101 simply devours it and they lose that card for the future.

Summon the monster in DEF? Lightning Chidori doesn't give a fuck and you dead draw.

Summon a combo piece that doesn't give a fuck if it gets Chidori'd? Just remove it with Dire Wolf/50/battle.

So then your opponent won't summon a monster of consequence unless they have an answer to your turn in their backrow. Unless you're in a bad position, this gives you a chance to play around that answer they have, allowing you to recoil from whatever answer they have.

It honestly seems like a decent card to measure a gamestate (still talking mostly HB atm), because you'll most likely have more plays after your first Xyz of the turn, via this and either an NS'd monster or Heraldry Reborn/Call/whatever.

Ironically, this card seems the absolute worst v. Heraldic Beasts, because Leo's going to pay off for them no matter HOW you remove it bar banishing, which R4 can't do. Or other cards like Leo.

Oh, and it's not like this card HAS to be used for an Xyz. If you have something that can produce an answer on board/something like Advanced Heraldry Art, this card just aids in swift OTKs because it's a "free"-to-drop 1600 beater. And a decent beater pre-Xyz as well, depending on what they revive, if anything.

Another benefit it has in Heraldic Beasts, is that it goes well with the variants that can main Chain Dog, allowing for 3 material options or more Xyz Monsters without worrying about using your Normal Summon much of the time.

I like it when a card can be analyzed with that much detail just from it's Level, Type, and Attribute, despite the effect looking too dangerous for usefulness in plain sight.

It's funny, though... This card's second effect gives the opponent the option of using it or not.
So given the fact that the player using This card has already thought all the results through, in the event they choose to revive something- They could just not do it. I mean, in an obscure case, but still.

But why wouldn't you use a free revive?

Depending on if you're in Japan, this is named either after Beluchitherium or Deinotherium. This could pass for either of them, but neither them nor this look like or. Are even related to hippos. Yet another casualty of trying to shove a pun into as many card names as possible.

The problem with this card is it's very much an early-game card. Knowing my luck, I will topdeck this in a late-game situation and lose because a single 1600 monster is not useful. And. I say this as someone who opens with 2 Malicious in hand like 50% of games I play with that deck. This has a lot to offer for Heraldic Beasts, but not a lot of other decks really want this. It's not as ohgodwhy as Silent Wobbegong, but it's mediocre to the same extent as Steven Seagal's acting.

Okay, an extinct elephant card that is supposed to be a hippo but looks like a hornless rhino in a suit of armor. ???

It's an okay card though, but I think some opponents could misuse it.

EDIT: If you look at the card closely you can see it has a trunk so I think it's supposed to be the extinct elephant thing.

It's an interesting Gilasaurus copy nonetheless. But looking at its stats being WIND and can allow your opponent to summon weak monsters...I guess it's time I shall make an official Gusto deck. Pirika is on the way as well so why not? It is a mediocre setup for some Synchros and tributes.
