VictorSempra
Well that's outright untrue. I know I'm of sound mind, but I could just one day feel like killing someone. Also, and this may not be the best analogy but I can only use this one because I've never seen a real murderer over a long period of time, but I've seen plenty of fictional characters who kill lots of people and not thought they were crazy, just that they enjoyed killing. And as with anything, you don't need a reason to enjoy something, you just do. Doesn't make you insane or anything. Using fiction is REALLY bad argument feed. It's about the worst thing you could use, really.

If you felt like, and actually WENT THROUGH WITH, killing someone then you aren't of sound mind. Sure, you could feel like killing someone, but if you're of sound mind you will keep yourself from going through with it. If you enjoy killing, then yes, you are crazy I think. Because you lack the moral and logical part of your mind that tells you not to kill people and enjoy it.
Shradow
Well, like I said, I haven't watched any documentaries or anything on real murderers, but if I did I'm sure I could find plenty who simply kill for the sake of it. And now we're getting into matters of perspective. Just because something isn't morally okay to a lot of people doesn't make you insane for doing it. Example, things like the mistreating of women in middle east countries and stuff (which does include killing, sometimes). To us it seems like a horrible thing, but I wouldn't consider them insane for doing it, it's simply part of their culture. One could say someone was not of sound mind for not killing people. It's all about what's really "normal" and what's not.

However, where this took place, the moral is that it is wrong to kill people without just cause. And most places agree it isn't moral to just go up and murder someone because you feel like it. Shradow
Fair enough. But we can't say for sure if they're mentally okay or not just because they went against our morals. Also, I would like to point out my arguments here in no way mean that I condone or partake in murder.
Tentacruel
Woah woah woah. Morality? That's a whole different ball park. Mental illness implies something you're born with. Something biological. I'd completely agree that what these girls did was evil. But that doesn't make them literately insane.

Shradow
Maybe to them it's not fictional, people believe in some way out there stuff. I mean, should we say that everyone who kills someone for the sake of religion is insane? If someone killed someone else for the sake of God or some other religious figure, I'd consider them doing it for a fictional character.

宇佐見 蓮子@C94
There was a case extremely similar to this in 2004, the Sasebo Slashing. Have a read for yourself: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sasebo_slashing Both times the perp were fans of horror games (creepypastas?), and they were both 12 year olds. Of course, Japan did the sensible thing and only jailed her for 9 years instead of 64. Anyway, I'm intrigued by this 'Slender Man made me do it' motive. The way I see it, they could mean: A. Some dickwad pretending to be Slender Man online talked them into doing it B. They planned the alibi all along to plead insanity C. They believed that Slender Man was going to kidnap their friend so they 'saved' her by stabbing her. Which may not sound realistic, but it makes a damn good plot for a game. Also, I would like to point out my arguments here in no way mean that I condone or partake in murder. Well I agree yeah. I just think that it really seems like they have some kind of issue, from what I know on the subject. I can't see another reason for trying to kill someone like that without a mental illness. Of course I don't think they should be let off for it at all. Woah woah woah. Morality? That's a whole different ball park. Mental illness implies something you're born with. Something biological. I'd completely agree that what these girls did was evil. But that doesn't make them literately insane. It's not though, as I said one example of mental illness is lack of moral thinking. Which they could've been born with. Morality is a state of mind after all. And evil is another tricky subject that I don't want to go into since it's even more a matter of perspective. Shradow
I can't see another reason for trying to kill someone like that without a mental illness. Well, if they really believe in Slederman, then I'd consider this no different from any other sort of religious killing or something similar. And I doubt everyone who's killed for the sake of religion or some higher power they believed in is mentally ill.
LordCowCowCowCowCowCowCowCow
Just going to say. Honestly. I think everyone has some level of mental illness. It depends on how extreme it is and how well you deal with it that matters.

VictorSempra
If everyone is mentally ill, then no one is. ... I like the Incredibles. Severity is still an issue. You can't put someone like me (Asperger's, low-level autism), on the same level as say someone who rocks in a corner with a straight-jacket on, wondering why their nostrils whisper sexy things to them. LordCowCowCowCowCowCowCowCow
If everyone is mentally ill, then no one is. ... I like the Incredibles. Not true. Because everyone has different manifestations of the illness and severity. Basically, I believe everyone has certain issues, anger, addiction, etc. Sometimes it's more extreme and sometimes these issues manifest in different ways. Such as hallucinations and delusions. Edit: This is also why I don't think insanity is a viable excuse except in certain extreme cases.

宇佐見 蓮子@C94
....I feel like my theories are being ignored here. Uuu... How cruel. Well, at least the victim survived. Maybe her testimonies will be crucial for solving the case. And I hope that they figure out what the motive was so when other cases like this pop up, we know how to deal with it. Ren✧
Alright, here is how I see it. These girls could very well be mentally ill, like I said, that article does not provide sufficient information to deduce one way or another if they are or not. At the same time, they could have just killed because of the lack of stigma that America has placed on killing. We see it in cartoons, on TV shows, in video games, and even on the news. People die and often enough, we don't see the backlash, the effects, or the impact. Instead, we say 'how sad' and move on, because we believe it is not our problem. This could very well have led these children to kill their friend as they have been fed this their entire lives. At the same time, they could be suffering from cyber bullying/harassment(not really sure what else to call) with someone impersonating slenderman online(credit to Toyo, didn't think of this before) and they were told to kill their friend after receiving a threat or something of that matter. At the same time, they could both be sociopaths, people that do not feel emotions, including remorse, which would lead them to kill without worrying about it or feeling any negative emotions as an aftermath. If this is the case, it is more likely than only one of them is a sociopath and the other is a follower that 'worships' and imitates the other. Surprisingly enough, this happens a lot with murderers. The key to figuring out one way or another would be to see if one of the girls shows sign of what was once called the Homicidal Triad(not sure what it is called now), but they include setting fires, wetting the bed, and cruelty to animals. If they are exhibiting these signs, then yes, one of the girls could very well be a sociopath or suffer from another mental illness. But as I have said, excessively at this point, we do not know enough to be arguing one point or another. However, in my honest opinion, these girls knew what they were doing and more than likely will regret what they have done(if they don't, another sign of a sociopath). But everyone that is arguing that these girls should get a shorter sentence, I really just don't understand. They have ruined their victim's life. She suffered nineteen stab wounds, and it seems was betrayed and mutilated by girls she called friends. Her life is screwed up FOREVER! Those other two deserve the same time, like I said. Lock'em up. Throw away the key.
Just Crouton
They probably didn't like the girl for whatever reason (kids never need a reason to hate someone,) planned the attack, and made up the Slenderman stuff to get an insanity plea. ... Or, they're just nuts. I understand people who kill people, Enlighten us, David Rossi. EDIT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLKj8OsVAPI Nevermind, they're nuts. Cin
Young children have such easily influenced minds. This whole thing is crazy, but it makes me wonder who thought it was a good idea to expose young children to Slenderman. (Saying that Goat Simulator seems to have a Slenderman themed thing in it, and Minecraft's Enderman is very close to that in design also). Very sad that this was against their own friend.
