So, we have 72 cards for each color. That's a loooooot. While we can technically stick to real-life MTG's philosophies, we can make some of our own spins I believe. IMO, for the first set, cards should be around common/uncomon level of complexity/power, with some being rare-level.

Hmm, I just started working on my own set of MTG cards, I have about 30 cards done and plenty more to do. I'll compile them and post them later if your interested.

Remember that by not designing for a Limited environment, it is much trickier to use design intelligently. Cards should still roughly be split into normal ratios of commons/uncommons/rares/Mythics, but cards shouldn't be redundant nor useless.

Well, no reason why we couldn't, though we'd have to figure out the new ratios of each rarity. Remember our set numbers are way different from regular ones.

It's possibly we can design the next sets after Alpha in a Limited style: each block makes for an almost 180-card cube format in itself.

Or said in other words...what general design rules are we following at designing this base set?
How would you design a base set?
What are we dealing with ATM?

Probably pretty low, with some oddballs around. We need a starting point, so we can't go too crazy.

But judging those how close are these to the intended power level we want?

Well, they're strong, big bombs, that's for sure. Not sure how those specific ones would fare, we should start from the "commons" first, just get some ideas down and develop them as it goes.

 

So, are we gonna have a keyword for Alpha or not? We might nab some IRL one or make one ourselves.

There's a lot of interesting designs here. In general, probably too oddball, but there's plenty of ways to refine and condense these designs.
