Yugioh: Archenemy

Recommended Posts

In similar vein to boss duels, however much more accessible to anyone and has a much wider range of cards, I present Yugioh's equivalent of Archenemy, a Magic format where 3 players take on 1 player who has access to extremely powerful cards and an increased life total.

Changed (basic) rules:

  • The archenemy can be challenged by up to 5 players.
  • The archenemy gains 4000 extra life points for each of their challengers.
  • When a challenger is defeated, they may pass all cards they control to another player if possible.
  • The archenemy wins if all the challengers are defeated.
  • The challengers win if the archenemy is defeated.
  • During the archenemy's draw phase, they draw 1 card for each remaining challenger.
  • The archenemy does not have a hand size limit.
  • The archenemy can have up to 6 cards with the same name in their deck, however their deck must consist of at least 100 cards.
  • The archenemy can have up to 30 cards in their extra deck.
  • The archenemy can control up to 23 cards, 10 spells and traps, 10 monsters and a field spell, as well as 2 pendulum monsters.

Archenemy mode adds special cards called "Enemy Cards" to the game. Only the Archenemy may have these cards in their deck, and only 1 copy of each. The archenemy may have up to 5 enemy cards in their deck. Enemy cards have a red frame (Proxies coming soon, don't worry :p)

Additionally, the Challengers may choose to take on a harder archenemy, if they choose to do so, these rules are also added:

  • At the start of each Challenger's turn, they take 100 damage for each card in their hand.
  • Each challenger may only control up to 3 monsters and 3 spell or trap cards.
  • Challengers may not pass cards when they are defeated.
  • At the start of the Archenemy's turn, they may choose a player and they choose 1 card they control, and give control of it to the Archenemy.

The challengers all take their turns before the Archenemy. Assuming 5 challengers are challenging the archenemy, the turn order would be all 5 challengers, then the Archenemy.

Regarding specific cards:

Cards like Timeeater, Parallel World, and such that skip a player's phases now skip the phases of ALL players in the game. If the archenemy is told to choose a player, they may choose from any of their challengers.

This was just a fun idea I came up with after having a ton of fun with Archenemy in Magic, thoughts?

As a boss duel host, I think this would be a fun addition to casual formats in yugioh. And I'd enjoy making enemy cards for it, perhaps new archetypes meant for this format specifically.

I can help you with the enemy cards, if you'd like.
