[Serious] I want to try to play YGO irl but I have my concerns.

Recommended Posts

Yeah, yeah. Only a few of you on this forum actually plays IRL. But still. I thought I would try.

My problem is not money(budget decks gogogo) or if the deck is good enough. My concern is how the playerbase acts. From what I've read, it seems rude and immature behavior is commonplace in this game. I'm also concerned about stealing. The locals I wanna go to seems decent enough but idk.

So, for anyone here who has/does play the game IRL, please tell me your experience(good or bad) and any advice would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance.

At my school, we had a Dark World player who basically had to make his own format to get his deck to work. He even made up bullshit rulings such as Neo-Spacian Grand Mole targets(it doesn't). If you showed him any rulings, he'd ignore it and say something like "I've been playing longer." or "I'm a street duelist." as if that meant anything.

My advice is don't use "I play for fun." as an excuse. You can have fun while playing by the real rules and in competition. Also, just because someone has been playing longer that doesn't make them better.

The idea of someone actually saying "I'm a street duelist" as if saying something like that would make him credible and not just sound like an idiot, or even at all in any circumstances, is one of the best things I have read.

The playerbase where I go is honestly really nice and accepting, often trying their best to make sure that everyone has a fun time more than anything. But this kind of question is not going to be answered by some people you meet online because every environment is different. What one person may experience will be a lot different from what you experience.

My suggestion would be to go to the locals after making a kind of budget deck that you like and at least sample the community out. If you don't like it, no big deal. You can always find another one sometime and no-one's forcing you to go back. If you do like it, however, then that's when the real fun begins.

Yeah, that's a good points. Locals differ from each other.

I actually plan to go to the locals to buy some stuff and to check it out. As for actually playing, well, I need to work some stuff out first.

I have almost exclusively positive things to say about my experience with the playerbase. I've made some amazing friends (and not just from the competitive clique) and had some good times. Sure, there were a handful of dicks but they are shunned as a whole and are not a majority. Don't let it hold you back. Rude and immature behaviour tends to be left behind on the internet.

That's what I'm hoping for me by playing a card game IRL; To make some friends. I like YGO a lot, but always been wary of IRL play because of the horror stories I've read.

As a player playing since the beginning and competing seriously from about 2007-2009, I can say it has generally improved from therein times. Yes, there are some crazy moments, but it's just like the news of murder stories and other mumbo jumbo. They are overemphasized over the good in the community. They are a lot more amusing, there are a lot more reasonably priced Decks, and you aren't prone to face the bs like stacking like I did back in my day. I'm siding with Liq and iHop on this one and saying go for it and see how it turns out. Have fun :)

Thanks!

And for those of you wondering, the deck I wanna make irl is Heroes. I don't think they are that expensive.

On a side note, I should probably go digging through my cards to see if I have anything I can use in the future. Think I got some more staple cards somewhere.

It's always hilarious to also see if you have the current overpriced card rn. Remove Brainwashing and Owner's Seal are going for like 7-10 a pop

You could try a weird lockdown with Necrovalley, a Malefic(Cyber End preferably), and Royal Decree.

This is Heroes here. I don't think Heroes would like Malefics
