Chimera looked up, seeing the shadowy figure the brothers were attacking. Was that Mephlies? Seemed to be, considering how angry the brothers were... but something didn't seem right. Would someone as... powerful... as Mephlies just reveal himself right away? If he learned anything from the Doctor, you didn't show the most powerful thing right away, you save it. Then again, maybe this thing was just messed up in the head.

"But I've always hated robots..."

Definitely messed up in the head.

"I'm not too fond of otherworldly demons, either," Chimera stated as he held up his arm.

"Dark Torrent!" Chimera switched his arm to flamethrower mode as Mephlies threw a sphere of dark energy at him, opting to leap over it.

"Burning Torrent!" He retorted as he began to unleash fire in a dense forest.

This was the best idea he had in awhile.

Ashen Forest

As Ken flew through the air, he looked to the sky.  He could almost laugh, they were fighting the equivalent of a god.

"Whoa! Ow... Don't worry... Caught ya...

Ken was caught by who he was thrown into, and was surprised to see Cynthia as they both toppled over.  He was pretty heavy, so the fact that they weren't pushed back even farther surprised him.

"Thanks for that..." Ken said through gritted teeth.  Ken watched as Cynthia whizzed past him, and joined the fray along with the rest of the team.  He shot a hand forth, trying to reach out to grab what he could not.  "NO!  Don't!  He's too strong!"  But it was too late.

Mephiles looked at his challengers, a bit amused that such a motley crew like this would dare challenge him.  It was almost comical.  As Axel's blade passed through his body, seemingly warping through and through, he laughed.

"Don't you get it fool?  You can't touch me!  You can't beat what you can't touch."

"You've got too much blood on your hands...Harvey's...Silver's...everyone in Metropolis...and wherever else your damned claws have touched..." Zane growled, before proceeding to make ice appear beneath his feet, which allowed him to skate towards the dark creature. "And this time...I'm going to send you back to hell where you belong!!"  The ice wolf skated towards him as well, wielding an icy blade that had been able to destroy one of his dark torrents.  As the wolf slashed away, the icy blade would be treated exactly as Axel's had before.  In between slashes, while the blade was nowhere inside his body, Mephiles jutted out a hand to grab the wolf's neck.  The sensation of his fur freezing his hand was something he had yet to feel, but it started to annoy him.

"Cryomancy...such a weak form of chaos...begone."  Mephiles placed a dark orb straight into Zane's stomach.  "I'll be staining my hands with your blood as well...and your friends will be next."  But before he could continue, a sharp pain was felt in his back.  The orb dissipated, and Zane was dropped back down to the ground.  Mephiles was at a loss for words as he turned around, but he saw nothing.  Instead, all he saw was a dagger sticking out of his back.

"A minor annoyance..." Mephiles winced as he plucked the dagger from his hide and tossed it to the ashy floor.

"Alright, Mephiles or whatever your called, consider this payback for whatever you did to Metropolis!"

Cynthia simply would phase through the entire demon's body.  When Mephiles turned towards her, his look had turned sour.

"That might have worked, if you weren't so adamant about using a battle cry."  Mephiles morphed his hand into a dark blade, and swung it down towards her.

"Burning Torrent!"

Mephiles' eye twitched.  Did the robot just copy the name of one of his signature attacks?!

"Cynthia!"  Ken launched himself towards the Hedgehog to swiftly pick her up and out of the way of Chimera's flamethrower.  They both returned to behind Chimera's position, where Ken had to hold back from knocking to robot upside the head...not that would do much besides piss him off.  "Maybe next time, you avoid using such a big attack while your allies are on the field?!"

The flame engulfed the black hedgehog, and grunts could be heard from inside the sweltering inferno.  The flames reached the forest, but the trees did not burn.  They remained charred and dead, not able to fuel the flames.  When the flames died down, Mephiles reemerged, almost grilled to perfection.  One of the demon's eyes was closed, and the other tried it's best to remain open.

"Worms....you're just....WORMS!"  The black hedgehog made another black orb, but this time it was ten times bigger in size.  Just then, a large explosion came from behind him, engulfing the demonic hedgehog in a wave of blue chaos energy.  "AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"  The source was from Axel's sword, which he had forgotten about in all of the commotion.

"I think that did it!"  Ken said, pumping his fist.  A look of victory sprawled across his face.  But that expression turned to disappointment as Mephiles, yet again, stood after the explosion had dispersed.  Although Mephiles stood upright, Ken could tell that the monster was in pain.  He could here the hedgehog wheezing from all the way across the battered field.  "What's the matter Mephy?  Too tired to bring out the clones today?"

Silence.  Did Ken strike a sour chord?

"That...is quite enough...I've had too much fun dawdling with the likes of you worms."  Mephiles started ascending into the air, raising a hand above his head.  A dark orb was created, and started to grow larger and larger, until it was large enough to cast a shadow upon the team, blocking out the sun from view.  There was no special name for this move, no cocky remark.  Mephiles lowered his hand, and the orb started to descend towards the team.

Ken looked up in horror.

"You gotta be kidding me..."  Ken said ruggedly.  He couldn't tell, but his knees were shaking...how were they going to get themselves out of this one?  What would Silver do in this situation?!  At that moment, something rang in his head...a memory.  It was a silly memory...a spider in his bed.  Ken was so afraid that he wouldn't sleep...he whined and cried for Silver to do something about it, but he refused.

"You must stand up to your fears Ken...be it a small spider, or a giant meteor, stand your ground.  Be like the mountain we live on, and be immovable...swat the obstacle out of your way...I know you can do it.  I believe in you."

"Damnit..." a tear rolled down Ken's face, "Even on the other side, you're right."  Ken could now feel his body.  He regained his composure.  He breathed deeply, in and out, slowly.  His fist clenched harder.  He pointed to the giant dark orb that headed straight their way.

"GET THE HELL OUT OF MY BED YOU DAMN SPIDER!!!!!!!!!!"  Ken jumped into the air, smashing the ground as he launched himself.  He prepared a kick, which created a strong current of air to cover his entire leg.  The wave of air collided with the orb, and Ken could feel the pressure eat away at his body, but he kept pushing.  Eventually he was forced back to Mobius.  He looked at his team with a fire in his eyes.  "Are you going to help me or not?!"  Again, Ken launched himself into the sky, using the same kick as before, and colliding with the orb.

In a place, no one knows not where...it could feel something....something on the other side...something filled with hate...something filled with anger...it would fuel that hate....it would fuel that anger...

Out of nowhere, the emerald in Axel's hand turned a sickly black, that which mimicked Mephiles' aura.

Zane seemed like he had the upper hand in this against Mephiles...he felt like he was actually doing something. However, it was brought to a crippling halt...when Mephiles grabbed a hold of his neck. "G-Gahh!!" he choked out, staring straight at Mephiles' cold dead eyes, knowing the air around him was doing the best it could to freeze him.

"Cryomancy...such a weak form of chaos...begone."

Zane growled, a weak one from the choke as he stared down Mephiles, only watching him preparing an orb of dark energy at his stomach. However, the arctic wolf counted his lucky stars as Alex's dagger hit its mark on Mephiles' back, causing him to be dropped. He gasped for air, before quickly dashing back away from the creature, and at a good time too...

"Burning Torrent!"

From out of nowhere, Chimera's assault of fire went straight towards Mephiles, engulfing the dark hedgehog. Zane was surprised that this worked, seeing the dark hedgehog being grilled to absolute perfection...but only saw him looking almost unphased by this...and as if things couldn't have gotten any worse...

"That...is quite enough...I've had too much fun dawdling with the likes of you worms."

Mephiles rose into the air, before calling forth a orb of dark energy that blocked out the sun. Zane gulped as he watched as Mephiles only lowered his hand, watching the orb making its descent.

Zane quickly deactivated the multi-tool, before putting it away. This was completely insane!! This wasn't going to even be possible to stop. He backed away some, clenching his fists. W-What the hell do we do? That...that isn't going to be easy to even stop! he thought, really thinking of finding a way back on the carrier. After all...something huge...beat it with something huge. However, before he could suggest this, Ken rushed forward...

"Are you going to help me or not?!"

Either this hedgehog was completely crazy...or just not one to give up. Regardless of which it was, the eyes he gave the group were that of determination...and as he watched the hedgehog launch himself towards this death orb, Zane was reminded of something...something he was told at a young age by his father...

"When adversity comes crashing towards you like an avalanche...don't take it laying down! We're wolves, son, so strike back at whatever it is with everything you've got!!"

Zane's fists clenched once more, before he shook his head. "Tch...how could I forget that? Man...I feel like an idiot..." he mumbled with a small chuckle...

-BGM-

With a newfound drive, Zane looked up at the dark orb, seeing where Ken was kicking at it every time he was launched. He looked back at the others, before smirking. "Ken's got the right idea."

Zane quickly began to skate away, getting to a better vantage of the orb. He climbed up a tree and stood on its limbs, looking right at the orb as it continued to make it's descent. "Wolves don't back down...we strike back at adversity with everything..." he spoke, as his hands began to channel the air around him. His hands seemed to pull the moisture from the air into a icy cloud that each hand had.

"We strike back...WITH EVERYTHING WE GOT!!!" Zane howled out, before bringing his hands together, watching as a large beam of cold energy made contact with the orb. Once it made contact, it seemed to be at least trying to start a frosting process on the orb.

Axel's gaze narrowed as he watched Mephiles's exchange with the other freedom fighters. Hastily warping away from the wall of flames that swept across the forest floor, the white hedgehog reappeared next to his comrades just in time to witness Mephiles prepare his next attack. "That...is quite enough...I've had too much fun dawdling with the likes of you worms." It's words were followed a massive orb of chaos energy that proceeded to block out the sun with it's monumental size before binging its slow descent towards the earth to crush the heroes.

"Are you going to help me or not?!"

"Ken's got the right idea. Wolves don't back down...we strike back at adversity with everything... We strike back...WITH EVERYTHING WE GOT!!!"

Zane and his brother were the first to meet the challenge; lashing out at the seemingly impossibly large orb of energy with everything they had. Though before Axel could step forward to join his comrades, his attention was suddenly drawn to the chaos emerald in his left hand. Without warning, the artifact had turned a sickly black hue that seemed to radiate in the air around the gem. "What?!" Just as the words escaped his lips, the white hedgehog's gaze grew distant.

iU8EggM.png

Suddenly, Axel found himself standing atop what would have appeared to be water, had the liquid not been the same sickly dark color that the chaos emerald had adopted. "What is this place?" Axel wondered aloud as he peered around his new surroundings. The entire area seemed to void of any identifiable features aside for... his brother?!

"Ken," Axel's eyes widened in shock as they settled on his brother's form standing a few yards ahead of him on the black body of water. Though he received no response at all... Taking a step towards his twin, Axel was forced to shield his eyes as a blinding light began to shine audaciously from somewhere behind Ken. From the light, stepped four other familiar figures... "Chimera, Zane..." Axel named his comrades as he struggled to make out their appearance through the blinding light. "Cynthia... and Alex?" Forced to take a step backwards from the intense light, the young prodigy could just barely register that the other freedom fighters seemed to walking towards whatever was the source of the brutal illumination.

"Guys, wait..." He called after them as tried to move forward, only to stumbled backwards again as the light seemed intensify. "Guys!" He pleaded with a hint of desperation as he was now forced to completely turn his back to the light to avoid being blinded. Glancing downwards towards his feet, Axel was then met with the sight of Silver's chaos emerald as it floated just bellow the surface of the black liquid.

Desperate for a way to escape the horrible light, Axel wasted no time in reaching down into the water and grabbing the emerald. Though upon breaking the surface, it felt as if his arm was grabbed by something bellow. Panicking, Axel grit is teeth before being forcibly pulled down into the murky depths.

"I see..." Back in the real world, Axel broke from his trance. Lifting his gaze from the black emerald, the white hedgehog released his grip on the artifact, only to have it begin floating at his side. Black chaos energy had begun to gather around Axel's form. Twisting and contorting the air around him and causing nearby debris to begin slowly rising above the ground. "So that's how it is," Axel's voice became a low growl that echoed with a slight distortion.

Staring up at the black sphere that still slowly fell towards him despite Ken and Zane's efforts, Axel tilted his head back and began to cackle madly. His laugh filled the air as he extended both arms to his side and began gathering the new energy that now seemed to be pouring from both the chaos emerald and Mephiles the dark himself. Had it always been there? This power?! No. He would have sensed it earlier... there was only one explanation.

"The emerald has deemed me worthy of its true power!" His words a heralded a wave of dim red light that begun spread itself outwards in a sphere with Axel in it's epicenter. It washed itself hungrily over the surrounding area. Bathing the dead forest, as well as all the other heroes in it's red hue, the light stretched itself outwards until meeting Mephile's attack before suddenly receding back towards it's source at a rapid pace.

"Chaos..." Axel growled has stacked his palms in front of his face and allowed the red light to condense itself into a sphere of pure negative chaos energy. The others would have to fend for themselves... with this new power he would finally be able to claim is revenge!

With blue color of his eyes now red with this new power, Axel's face twisted into a grin filled with bloodlust before vanishing in a sudden flash of crimson. Reappearing directly behind Mephiles, the white hedgehog thrusted the sphere into the creature's back without warning, causing the gathered energy to erupt in a violent explosion of blood red energy directly above the sphere that threatened those bellow... "BLAST!"

Chimera noticed one thing as his flames engulfing the demon of darkness. The forest did not burn. That meant he wouldn't set anything on fire, which also meant he wouldn't hurt the 'team'. This meant...

"Chimera, no!" a quiet, same part of his processor called out to him. However, a much louder, much more insane part screamed in response to the quiet voice.

"Chimera, YES!!!" it screamed as Chimera raised his flame arm. "AND NOW WE BURN EVERYTHING!!!" he stated with a insane, yet happy cackle. However, Mephlies had other plans. With a hand raised over his head, he created a ball of energy, which he he threw out the team. Ken had jumped to the sky to try to kick it back, while Zane had fired an ice beam to try to fire it back. Chimera was about to give his own addition to the cause... Before his processors began to scream out warnings.

He looked over to Axel, where a large amount of negative chaos energy was gathering. Was... Axel... Oh yeah, yeah, he was tapping into the negative energies. Ooooooooh joy.

"The emerald has deemed me worthy of its true power!" Axel cackled, to which Chimera just stared.

"What are you on...?" he asked, before realizing the attack the hedgehog was creating. Chaos Blast? Shadow of Shadow or not, that was dangerous. He quickly threw up his Black Shield. He wanted nothing to do with that!

Not that anyone could tell but Alex had a smile on her face, not only did she successfully attack mephiles sight but she also saved Zane from getting blown away. She remained invisible and grabbed the knife mephiles had thrown away. "Better not waste these..." she muttered as she reappeared by the others to see Chimera burning everything in sight. "Hmph... No class..." she muttered to herself. If your gonna go pyromaniac, at least produce a controlled fire.

Mephiles emerged from the fire, unscathed but exhausted all the same. "That...is quite enough...I've had too much fun dawdling with the likes of you worms." he rose high into the air and then generated an enormous orb of darkness that he proceeded to launch. "Oh great... How are we supposed to stop that?" Alex's question was answered as seemingly everyone started to try and stop the orb. "Tch... Well... How am "I" supposed to stop this?" she rephrased her question.

Only a second later, she could here maniacal laughter, not from mephiles, not from chimera, but from Axel? She turned her head to see him using... Red energy? "Wait... Axel? What are you..." before she could finish her question, Axel teleported away. Alex looked to the sky and saw that he was behind Mephiles.

"Chaos..." whatever he was doing, Chimera was putting up a shield to hide from it. Alex took a page from chimera's book... And hid behind him. "Sorry, but your probably the safest thing to hide behind right now..." she told Chimera. "BLAST!" Alex braced herself for whatever Axel was doing.

"That might have worked, if you weren't so adamant about using a battle cry." Cynthia was surprised to see her fist phase right through the dark hedgehog. A dark blade was immediately swung at her, luckily she was able to block it with her already morphed arm.

 "Burning Torrent!"

"Cynthia!" Cynthia was shocked by Ken pushing her out of the way, only to see a huge fume of fire get launched over her and straight into Mephiles. Cynthia returned back with Ken to see the culprit of the fire, Chimera. "Maybe next time, you avoid using such a big attack while your allies are on the field?!" Ken exclaimed.

"Yeah, some of us prefer to get out of this without getting roasted alive!" Cynthia added. She looked on to see that the dark hedgehog was far from done and was in fact charging an enormous attack. "Oh goody..."

Not a second later, Cynthia heard a creepy laugh coming from Mr. Gloom, Axel, of all people. Red energy was also coursing through him, not the usual blue. He teleported away, and appeared in the air behind Mephiles. "Chaos..." That didn't sound good. "Uhhhh... Ken? May want to get behind me..." As she said this, she morphed both her arms nto more shield-like forms and braced herself. "Whatever your doing "edgehog", you better hope it doesn't hurt us!" She called to Axel.

"BLAST!"

Ashen Forest

Mephiles' eyes glimmered with joy as the ball was sent hurtling towards his opponents, there would be no hope in stopping it...they were too powerless to stop it.  He could almost grin if he had possessed a mouth.  No matter how hard the worms struggled against the orb, their efforts would prove futile.

"Chaos..."

Mephiles heard the cry from far away, and he could sense an energy much like that of his own...this was a dark type of chaos...but who would be so eager to use it down there?  Who was capable of obtaining that power that wasn't Sonic the Hedgehog?  He hesitated...looking to his left and right, trying to anticipate where the attack would come from.

"BLAST!"

It was too late, the attack was coming from behind him.  He had no time to react.  All he could do was turn over his left shoulder to see the oncoming attack.  A large wave of red washed over him, and he could feel the pain running through his body.  This attack was too vast to dodge.

"Why....you...little..." Mephiles forced out, struggling to talk as the wave of energy pushed against every inch of his body, almost vaporizing the shadowy surface of his skin.  Meanwhile, the energy wave started heading for the black sphere.  Upon making contact with it, a dark purple aura could be seen where the two sources of energy met.  The black sphere was being pushed even more powerfully towards the heroes.  Ken realized the sudden change in pressure, but failed to realize what was happening behind the sphere that blotted out the sun.  The only other person who was helping him hold back the giant orb was Zane, who was using all he could to try and freeze the orb solid, but the pace at which it was freezing was way to slow compared to how rapidly the orb was approaching.

"Damnit....what are the others..."  Ken took a quick glance behind him to see Chimera encompassed in a black diamond, while Cynthia shifted her arms into a shield.  "It's no use....I guess I'll have to do it then..."  Behind grit teeth, Ken gave a mighty roar.

"INHIBITOR OF HOPE!  RELEASE!  HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAUUUUUUUUUUGH!!!!"  Ken could feel the power within his body, and focused all of that power into his leg.  He could feel the immense pressure, and pain, that always came with unlocking a new inhibitor, but it was all he could think of.  It was as if he could feel the bones of his leg start to shatter apart, or at least that's what he felt was happening inside of it.  He managed to get a kick off across the orb, which sent it reeling backwards.  It gave him enough time to find the spot that Zane had started to freeze.  He aimed for the spot, and hit it with a roundhouse kick directly into the center of the frozen spot.  "GET OUTTA HERE, DAMNIT!"  The part of the orb he had kicked suddenly started to fracture, and eventually, the cracking rippled across the entirety of the sphere.  As the cracks met each other as they swept across the radius of the sphere, it exploded into a shimmering rain of purple energy, sweeping Ken away to Mobius in the process.  Ken landed with a loud thud between Cynthia and Chimera, breathing heavily.  "Worst...game...of kickball...ever..." he said with a worn out smile on his face.

As he rose, he saw Mephiles in the air, with a strange figure he couldn't recognize behind him...or at least a figure he didn't want to recognize as his own brother.  The aura Axel was giving off...it was intense and filled with murderous blood lust.  Whoever that was, it wasn't his brother.  Ken slowly, and shakily, rose of the ground.  He took a step, and then another.  The next one, he put all his remaining leg strength into a jump that propelled him towards Axel.  He cocked his fist back and mustered some strength to punch Axel square in the jaw.  As he passed his brother after landing a successful hit, he smiled.

bgm

"Snap out of it bro...this isn't how he'd wanna see you..."  Ken's eyes shut as he plummeted back towards the ground, this time unconscious.

Mephiles stared at Axel for a while.  He was dumbfounded that this creature had been able to harness the capabilities of negative chaos energy.

"Heh...I guess I underestimated you...but your numbers are thinning.  You surely can't outlast me..."  And then there was a pain he hadn't noticed before that struck him in that instant. A pain that crept up his left side.  He looked to it to see that his left arm and leg had both vanished.  As a matter of fact, his the whole left half of his body was now gone.  Casualties of the chaos blast.  He was all right now, but he definitely wasn't alright.  He struggled to breath as he shadows from the forest floor slowly moved their way towards his body.  If he could, he surely would be sweating bullets right about now.  He was trying to regenerate his body as fast as he could.  Now was the time to strike.

"Chaos...BLAST!"

Zane's ears perked up at hearing this shout and declaration of an attack, before seeing that Axel was behind Mephiles and unleashing a large red wave washing over and enveloping him. However...besides the lightshow, he was having trouble now. Because of Axel's little stunt, he was the only one trying to push the orb of dark energy back (aside from Ken). But no matter what he did...it seemed to continue to fall...

DAMNIT!! Zane thought, his teeth grinding against themselves as the arctic wolf continued to put his everything into this attack. "I ain't going down...IT ISN'T ENDING HERE!!!" he shouted, adding more energy to this icy beam as it struck at the orb...

"INHIBITOR OF HOPE!  RELEASE!  HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAUUUUUUUUUUGH!!!!"

The wolf's ears perked up again as he saw Ken unleashing another inhibitor, before smirking. Now that was something they definitely needed. He watched the hedgehog leap up and kick off it and noticed what he was going for. The freezing spot he had been working on. "Heh..send it packin' Ken!!!" Zane shouted with a grin, before watching the white hedgehog do just that.

"GET OUTTA HERE, DAMNIT!"

Within moments, the orb exploded in a shimmering rain of purple energy as Zane lowered his hands slowly. He could feel that this whole ordeal was a lot more taxing than the first times he fought with the group. He huffed slowly, trying his best to catch his breath. His eyes slowly looked over at the figure that was behind Mephiles...it was Axel...or was it?

W-What in the...? Zane thought, looking at this figure with an overwhelming energy. However, it was only seconds before Ken reached him and punched Axel in the face...before passing out unconscious. But...Zane was surprised and even terrified that this was even happening. What caused this...this sudden transformation?

"Heh...I guess I underestimated you...but your numbers are thinning.  You surely can't outlast me..."

Zane looked over at Mephiles, seeing him for what he had become due to the Chaos Blast. This was it...an opportunity to stop him here and now. C-C'mon...just a little bit more energy...we're stopping this now! he thought, jumping from the tree branch and slamming his palms on the ground. The instant he did that, around Mephiles would become cold. An icy whirlwind would seem to emerge from the ground where the shadow creature stood...until...

"Y-Your reign...o-of terror ends here...so I'm going to have...t-to ask that you..." Zane huffed with a piercing glare as suddenly the icy whirlwind stopped and Mephiles would soon be encased in ice. "F-Freeze...h-heh...Harvey...p-p-probably would've liked that..." He huffed greater now, as he dropped to a knee, doing his best to catch his breath. It was obvious he used up a lot of energy...but then again...all the heroes of old did too. They gave 100%...sometimes even more.

Cynthia braced herself from the coming orb of energy as it was sped up by Axel's attack on mephiles.

"INHIBITOR OF HOPE!  RELEASE!  HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAUUUUUUUUUUGH!!!!"

Cynthia looked from behind her makeshift shield to see Ken unleash some kind of power and shattering the enormous dark orb. "Ok... Kinda glad he wasn't going all out on that race now..." She mumbled to herself. She unmorphed her arms and looked up to see Mephiles in a sorry state from Axel's attack.

"Y-Your reign...o-of terror ends here...so I'm going to have...t-to ask that you..." Cynthia caught a glimpse of Zane as he created a whirlwind of ice around the dark hedgehog. "F-Freeze...h-heh...Harvey...p-p-probably would've liked that..." She didn't know what he meant by that, but he just gave Cynthia an opportunity to end this. With Mephiles freezing solid, Cynthia took out her Extreme Gear and hopped on it. "Thanks for the ice Wolfy, now... Time to finish this creep!" Cynthia took off at high speeds and morphed her fist for one big swing.

Axel floated in the air behind Mephiles with a mad grin plastered across his face, as the young prodigy began to gather energy in his right hand in preparation for another Chaos Blast. Though he had noticed that the others had managed to destroy the orb that he had knowingly pushed down towards them with his last attack, Axel's dim red eyes failed to observe the shower of purple snow that had begun to rain down on the forest, or even check on the state of the his allies. "This next one..." The white hedgehog spoke in a low growl, as the red energy in his hand began to violently vibrate.

iU8EggM.png

Meanwhile, Axel's true self found himself slowly sinking deeper and deeper into the black liquid that he had been pulled down into. Unable to move upwards, he watched helplessly as the silver light of the chaos emerald lit the path of his decent into the murky depths. Though he felt no fear. On the contrary, the white hedgehog found sanctuary in the darkness... rid of the horrid light that had swallowed up the other freedom fighters, Axel finally felt at rest.

"You've always known that you were different..." A voice suddenly broke the silence that he had grown so used to. A voice that was all too familiar. "Silver knew it. Ken knows it. Chimera's technology must have sensed by now... And the other three? They're simply too blind to see the truth... but we can open their eyes now!" Axel's brow furrowed in confusion at the sound of his own voice from somewhere down bellow, only to have shock wash over his expression upon seeing himself standing at the bottom of the black ocean that had swallowed him. "Because now the emerald has acknowledged it as well..."

Only barely illuminated by the light of the emerald, the doppelgänger stared up towards Axel with a bright red eyes that shown through pitch black sclera as it continued to speak in an amused tone. "This power, it suits you." It continued as Axel slowly continued to drift closer and closer. Extending it's hand out towards Axel as if beckoning him closer, the doppelgänger's lips curled into a grin that reveled a mouth full of monstrously sharp teeth before continuing. "Let's show them... let's show this whole planet our true potential!

Silently, Axel began to reach forward to grab the imposter's hand. His picture of the outside world began to grow even more distant with every inch he moved closer, and in this moment his mind seemed to be taken by a lovely fog. This was what he wanted. Power. The power to destroy everything that threatened what he needed to protect...

Just as he was mere centimeters from grasping hands with the imposter, a sudden flurry of movement caused Axel to abruptly halt his advance. In an instant, Ken had appeared from behind the other Axel, bursting right through the double's face with his fist cocked backwards. Before Axel could react, Ken swung the fist into the side of his face at full force. Sending the young prodigy reeling back towards the surface of the black water. Glancing downwards through his pained expression, Axel's mannaged to catch a glimpse of his doppelgänger just before breaking through the water's surface. The creature's expression had shifted to a knowing smirk...

"Snap out of it bro...this isn't how he'd wanna see you..."

It was like being awoken from a daydream. Watching Ken's smile fade with his consciences before plummeting down towards the earth, Axel's grin melted away to an expression of disbelief. Steam billowed from the scuff that was left from his twin's fist, and as Axel's red eyes followed his twins decent they widened in panic.

"Heh...I guess I underestimated you...but your numbers are thinning.  You surely can't outlast me..." Mephiles wheezed but was soon interrupted by a bone chilling attack from Zane. Only concerned with his twin, Axel called upon the black emerald's power yet again. "Chaos control!" His growl brought time to a grinding halt, and allowed him time to fall down after his brother. Diving past frozen a Cynthia as she charged towards Mephiles on her board to attack the creature whilst it was vulnerable, Axel hastily scooped his twin out of the air before loosing his grasp on time.

Having been stirred yet again by Zane's last attack, the purple snow fluttered around the forest floor as Axel landed, suddenly appearing behind Zane, Alex, and Chimera with his head hung low. His aura of negative chaos energy and killer intent continued to hungrily twist and contort in the presence of the three new entities, but Axel himself remained completely stationary. Within moments, the black energy receded back into the chaos emerald, which seemed to hungrily inhale the darkness from Axel, as well as the shadows that had attempted to move up towards Mephiles before regaining it's original color an falling into Ken's lap.

"..."

Axel stared down at his twin whilst he held the other hedgehog somberly in his arms. Still unsure what to make of all that had just happened, he kept his back to the others whilst checking Ken's condition.

Chimera was in his shield, waiting for it. It was a Chaos Blast, the effects would be devastating, more than likely engulfing this whole area, especially with it being powered by an emerald steeped in darkness. He waited, and waited... but it didn't happen. Looking up, he saw Axel was cradling an injured Ken and the others where attempting to finish off this... Mephlies. Something was wrong. He could tell that much. Like, how that Chaos Blast didn't do jack. Was he overestimating Axel? At this rate, he was even worse than being a shadow....

The robot quickly morphed his arm into a gun, taking aim. Without a word, he fired, determined to strike a bullet through Mephlies' brain.

Alex was unsure of what happened, first there was a giant orb of darkness heading towards them, now its apparently snowing purple while mephiles is extremely injured. Chimera, Zane, and Cynthia charged forward to finish off mephiles, but Ken and Axel... Ken was falling from the air and Axel was floating there, still crackling with that red energy. Suddenly, Alex felt another shift, like when Axel caught her after they fell from that cliff. One second, Axel and Ken were in the air, the next, Axel was standing there holding Ken, he was extremely silent.

It wasn't like her to care for others, but after all that's happened, Alex couldn't continue the lone cat act. "A-axel? Are you... Ok? Is Ken... Ok?" she asked, trying to get a few words out of Axel.

Ashen Forest

Mephiles clung to consciousness, as he desperately tried to reform himself.  With his good half, however, he was able to hear the cries of the ones that so desperately fought against him.

"Y-Your reign...o-of terror ends here...so I'm going to have...t-to ask that you...F-Freeze...h-heh...Harvey...p-p-probably would've liked that..."

From beneath him,  an icy blast erupted from the earth, encasing him in a freezing wind that was unlike anything he had ever felt.  He snickered, as frost began to envelop his entire body.  He could feel his limbs become stiff, and unable to move themselves.

"I'll give you a compliment, runt!  You're attacks chill me to the bone much more than those pathetic wolves in the arctic did!  I'll give you credit for that, but in the end, your struggle will prove futile, just like those damned wolves before you!"  The shadows were slowly creeping back up to him, and he could feel the energy surge back into his body.  In the blink of an eye, however, the shadows that he so desperately desired were transposed back into the emerald that Axel possessed.  A strain could be seen in Mephiles' eye, as he knew his last attempt to reform his body was now failing.

"Thanks for the ice Wolfy, now... Time to finish this creep!"

"N-no!  STAY BACK!"  The desperation in Mephiles' voice was now clear.  As her fist made direct contact with his chest, a large cracking sound could be heard.  He couldn't breathe, his chest was basically frozen solid by this point, and thanks to his girl, was on the verge of shattering in an instant.  As he transfixed his gaze one last time at the Mobians who gathered together in front of them, he uttered out one last cry.  "THIS ISN'T OVER YOU WORMS!  NOT BY A LONG SHO-" Chimera's bullet pierced Mephiles' forehead.  In the next second, Mephiles' body collapsed, bursting into a rain of purple and icy blue powder.  The shadow had seen the light, and was forced back.

Outside A Certain City

He tried to sense the inhabitants of this large city...it was crazy to think he'd miss it during his escapades.  However, he was unable to determine how many living beings were in it at all...if there were any in the first place.  It seemed that there was some sort of barrier surrounding the building.  A mystical barrier that he was unable to sense pass.  His brow furrowed with anger...who could have devised such a magic that would block the senses of a god!

It all rushed back to him, the original Mephiles.  The pain, the sight of those worms looking at him as if they were triumphant.  It was followed by rage.  Mephiles' fist clashed against the a boulder, chiseling off tiny bits of rock from it.

"How..." he stated, inhaling as deeply as he could, "How could they have grown so strong since then!  I refuse to believe it..."  Mephiles stood upright, a look of concern in his eyes.  "I refuse..."  In his mind, he wondered if he should have reported the news to Gwynn...but they were so close to obtaining more power that it would prove futile in the long run.  Mephiles' looked to a large building in the distance, eyeing it with intensity.

"Soon brother..."

Ashen Forest

Ken slowly opened his eyes, yawning in the process.

"Man...I really got to stop passing out so often..."  He looked up to see his brother staring back at him.  Ken jumped a bit in shock, but then smiled like a goof.  He brought his fist to his brother chin, and gently swiped it past.  "Now that's the dreary brother I know and love...glad to have you back Axel."  Ken saw that the emerald was in between his legs, and was a bit surprised by that too.  Axel was a maniac when it came to chaos, but it was good to see that his brother hadn't lost touch with his emotions.

Putting a hand on Axel's shoulder, Ken rose to his feet, albeit a bit shakily.  He stuck out his hands as the snowy substance around him began to fall.  He stuck out his tongue to see if he could catch a snowflake.  Upon taking further inspection, he noticed Mephiles was nowhere to be found.  It took him some time, but he finally put two and two together to figure out that he was basically eating Mephiles snow.  He took a couple of spit takes to try and get the taste of hate and darkness out of his mouth, all the while he laughed in the process.

"Well...I can barely stand...how's about we rest here for the night?"

Later that night

With the entire effort of the group, and a little pyromania from the robot, the group was all huddled in front of a small fire.  Sleeping bags had been dropped from the Light Piercer above, even one for Chimera.  Ken peered at Chimera, confused, until he finally spoke up.

"Do you even need one of those??"

"I'll give you a compliment, runt! You're attacks chill me to the bone much more than those pathetic wolves in the arctic did! I'll give you credit for that, but in the end, your struggle will prove futile, just like those damned wolves before you!"

Zane looked at Mephiles and the words he spoke almost chilled the wolf to the bone. His fists began to clench tightly, but he couldn't outright go over towards Mephiles and beat the hell out of him. "What?! What...WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO!?" he shouted, hoping to get some answers...but...

"Thanks for the ice Wolfy, now... Time to finish this creep!"

"W-Wait a minute!!" the arctic wolf didn't expect Cynthia to already be on the ball on this. Before he could get any answers, the hedgehog's fist made contact and the frozen prison was shattered. He watched Mephiles squirm and try his best to reform...and Zane wanted nothing more to pry all the answers he wanted from this creature's mind...however:

"THIS ISN'T OVER YOU WORMS!  NOT BY A LONG SHO-"

Mephiles was loud, but then silence after the sounds of Chimera sending a bullet directly to his forehead. Before the group, this creature began to fade away and with it...Zane's hopes to figure out what he meant. But right now...Ken woke up and suggested that they rest here. It was probably for the best...especially when not everyone was in working order and in need of some good old rest. But Zane...Zane wouldn't be able to sleep.

While the others were all huddled by the fire, Zane stood a ways away from the group, looking up at the moon that shone above over the treetops. His arms crossed over his chest, his fists clenching tightly as the words Mephiles spoke before he faded continued to linger in his mind.

Those pathetic wolves... Your struggle will prove futile... Just like...those damned wolves...

Zane looked away from the moon, closing his eyes. Damnit... he thought, feeling a cross between defeat and anger now. Damnit... He wanted nothing more than this very moment to find this creature from the deepest pit of hell and send him back there to where he belonged. Of course...hearing those words only made Zane fear the very worst.

"Damnit..." Zane growled out, clenching his fists tighter, before turning around and slamming his fist into the tree near him. Of course it didn't do any damage, but it was something he could at least hit that wasn't a friendly. He wanted to cry right now...he wanted to just drop everything, return to the Light Piercer and cry his eyes out. From his perspective...Mephiles admitted to the young arctic wolf that he HAD murdered his family...his friends...

Zane slowly turned around to have his back face the tree, having him lean against it as he slowly slumped down, now sitting at the base of the tree. His knees were up against his chest, his head resting on his arms. I have to get stronger...stronger for them... he thought, trying to fight back tears.

Cynthia had a huge smile on her face as her fist made contact with mephiles, almost shattering his already weakened form. She went a good distance before hopping off her extreme gear, just to make sure she didn't get hit by a counter attack.

"THIS ISN'T OVER YOU WORMS!  NOT BY A LONG SHO-"

Before he could even finish his monologue, a laser bolt found its way through mephiles' head. "Looks over to me Snowflake..." Cynthia said as mephiles shattered into a flurry of purple ice. She made her way back to find that everyone was at least alright, save for Zane and Ken, who were exhausted from the fight.

"Well...I can barely stand...how's about we rest here for the night?" Ken said to everyone. It was a good idea, after dealing with that murderous hedgehog, everyone needed a bit of rest. "Heh, yeah... Sounds good Ken..:"

Later that night...

Cynthia was lying on her back looking at the sky. After that little skirmish, it was nice to get some R&R. A thought came back into Cynthia's head from a while ago on the Light Piercer. "Oh yeah... Yo, Ken... You wanted a bit of a look at my ability right?" She asked, sitting up. She pulled off her gloves and proceeded to morph her arms. "I don't know how or why... But I'm somehow able to harden parts of my body. I can shift the size of my limbs and they even become as durable and hard as steel, see..." She said putting her hand in the fire, she brought it out after a few seconds. "Weird for a hedgehog to have something like that right?"

The entity that they were battling faded into nothingness from the rest of the group's efforts. Though it was only a mere copy, this was still a victory. Still deathly silent as he gazed down at his brother, Axel heard Alex's voice.

"A-axel? Are you... Ok? Is Ken... Ok?"

"..." He remained stationary for a moment, before turning slightly to meet the thief's gaze. All the light had completely fled Axel's left eye, leaving it a dark blue that seemed all but empty. His right eye however, was that of monster. With  black sclera and a bright red iris that mirrored his doppelgänger's... He stared into Alex's face for a moment with an expression void of any mobian emotion as the blackness in his sclera began to drain down into his tear duct and his right eye's color changed to match the left. A remnant of the darkness that had spilled from the emerald that would remain with the young prodigy.

Unable to find the right words to say to Alex. Axel slowly turned his back to the group as he continued to watch over his brother.  "Now that's the dreary brother I know and love...glad to have you back Axel." He watched as Ken's fist gently brushed against his chin, causing his eyes to narrow slightly and a small smile to form at the side of his mouth. The idiot was ok...

Whilst his brother brought himself to feet and addressed the others, Axel stood alone at the edge of the group. Watching from a far, the hedgehog's smile soon faded at the image of the entity that had reached out to him only a moments ago. It had also been smiling...

"Oh yeah... Yo, Ken... You wanted a bit of a look at my ability right?" Cynthia's voice prompted Axel to look up from the fire. Watching as she rolled up her sleeves to demonstrate her power, Axel took the time to observe the girl's aura. "I don't know how or why... But I'm somehow able to harden parts of my body. I can shift the size of my limbs and they even become as durable and hard as steel, see..." It was a lot like his brother's; free flowing and unfocused like the wind. Though if Ken was a hurricane, she was closer to Jet stream... Meandering in a single direction, rather than simply obnoxiously swirling around the area due to his lack of control. "Weird for a hedgehog to have something like that right?"

"You're a passive chaos force user like the wolf and cat. Regardless of the fact that you're completely oblivious to it; you hold a connection to the chaos force." Addressed Cynthia before returning his gaze to the fire. "Though you lack the ability to truly draw on it's power, you're able to use that connection to evoke a unique ability within yourself akin to a mutation..." He paused for a moment and glanced off into the woods upon sensing a sudden surge of emotion form Zane. "In a sense, what you have is a primitive form of chaos control."

Alex felt a chill go down her spine when she looked face to face with Axel. His right eye looked monstrous and he had such a blank expression, it was almost like he was staring right into her soul. A bit later his eye seemed to change back to normal, but the creepiness of the situation remained.

Ken woke up a second later and it all seemed alright now. "Well...I can barely stand...how's about we rest here for the night?" Resting sounded good to Alex, she needed some time to think.

That Night...

Alex was laying on a tree banch a few feet away from the campsite, she couldn't get that look of Axel's out of her head. What exactly went on during that fight with Mephiles? In any case, the tree that Alex was laying in shook, knocking her out of her thoughts. She looked down to see Zane slumped down against the tree.

Something was obviously eating at him. "Hey... You alright down there Mr. Freeze?" she said trying to lighten him up a bit.

Chimera said nothing as he watched the shadows melt away. This... Mephlies was a real threat. That wasn't a defeated villain, that was a retreating villain. He should know, he was made by one of the most famous retreating villains in the multiverse. Maybe the other is where Eggman got the inspiration for his morphing arm...

"Well...I can barely stand...how's about we rest here for the night?"   Ken's voice brought Chimera back to reality, and he nodded in response. It seemed the organics would need a rest after all. Meanwhile, Chimera would need to run a diagnosis on himself... being afraid of a Chaos Blast that never came... ridiculous! His family would be laughing at him if they could see him now.

They had gathered wood, and using some intense, beautiful fire, Chimera had managed to make a fire the small group huddled around, minus Zane, who was emotionally traumatized from the battle. The 'Light Piercer' (Ugh, he hated that name) dropped sleeping bags for the organics... and surprisingly one for himself. He looked down at it before looking back up at the ship, tilting his head. Reef should have known...

"Do you even need one of those??" Ken asked curiously.

"No, I do not 'sleep' like you organics," Chimera stated as he folded his arms. "I do enter a standby state where my memories are backed up and my nanites perform minor repairs on my systems. However, I will not enter it tonight... tonight, I will keep watch. We are in a hostile environment...," He stood up, walking a short distance away before powering up his scanners, keeping watch for the scary things that go bump in the night... besides himself, of course.

His gaze eventually turned towards Zane. He had just learned he lost everything. He was gone for some time, and now his family was gone, his home destroyed, and now he was stuck with a group of strangers that he had to trust and hope they could save the world.

It was funny how the robot could relate...

Ken nodded.

"Just means your special!  Like me!  There isn't anything weird about that...and you're the only one that I've been able to meet fist for fist...you're truly incredible Cynthia."  Ken scratched his cheek, realizing what he said might have been a bit super corny.  He smiled and continued.  "It's an amazing ability...and with more control over it, who knows what you'll be able to do."  He clenched his fist...maybe she could become stronger than he ever could...but he wouldn't let it happen so easily!

Robots were weird...

Just across the way, inside the forest where Zane and Alex resided, a rustling could be heard in the bushes nearby...but if they checked, they would see nothing.  The constant noise of twigs snapping and strange brushing sounds would be heard all over...and the feeling of eyes that were burning into the back of their heads would be felt as well.  They were being watched...but by what?

"Hey... You alright down there Mr. Freeze?"

Zane's ears perked up a bit, before looking up and noticing that Alex was sitting on one of the tree's branches. He hadn't even noticed the cat was even in the tree. Huh...a cat in a tree...wow, Zane must've been really out of it. Not noticing Alex was in the tree or even chuckling or snickering at the fact that she would literally be a cat in a tree. He didn't even really smile or laugh at the little nickname that was thrown at him.

"Alex...s-sorry...didn't notice you were there." he simply said, nodding. "Yeah, I-I'll be fine. D-Don't worry about me..." With that, Zane simply gave a thumbs up towards the cat.

Was he telling the truth about him being alright? At this point, not even he knew. Zane was just filled with a mixture of negative feelings right now that he couldn't exactly think straight. But he did know one thing right now...his fur was standing on end, as he could feel something. Something or someone was watching them. It almost felt like whatever this individual's gaze was of that of a burning prod in the back of his head.

At this point, Zane jumped up to his feet and looked around. Where? Where? he thought, looking around the area he and Alex stood. "Hey! I know your there...come on out!"

Axel scoffed loudly at his brother's near infinite pool of vomit inducing positive sentiments. Though his attention was soon stolen by a sudden drop in the temperature in the immediate area. Even whilst they were sitting around the fire, the three mobians would suddenly feel a chill run down their spines.

The low hum of energy could be heard, as Axel's gaze suddenly began to glow bright blue. Something was wrong. Though it was subtle, there was definitely an imbalance in the Chaos Force that he'd never experienced before...

Without a word, the young prodigy shot Chimera a look to alert the robot of the disturbance, before glancing around the camp area. Suddenly, Axel leaped to his feet, his glowing gaze trained on the brush behind Ken. "There's no hiding from these eyes..." Axel called out into the forest before hastily extending his hand and firing off a small bolt of energy just over Ken's shoulder.

The attack flew into a nearby bush before exploding. Only reveal nothing but scorched earth and upturned roots that were only barely visible from the small cloud of ash that had been disturbed.

With the presence he had thought he sensed now nowhere to be found, Axel felt rather odd. Had he just imagined it? He lowered his hand slowly before wearily glancing around the forest. Maybe the events that had happened earlier had left his senses damaged... No. He was sure that something was there!

That would explain much, not much finesse when you can morph part of your body into a weapon.

But I appreciate the compliment, most people back at Metropolis saw me as a bit of a weirdo because of my powers... It's nice to know someone appreciates them..."

Suddenly Cynthia felt a chill go down her spine. "Brrr... Anyone else feel that?" She looked around to see what caused that but there was nothing. Axel shot a bit of energy into the bushes but there didn't seem to be anyone there. "Anyone else get the feeling... We're being watched?"

"Hey! I know you're there...come on out!"

"Kekekeke..."  A laughing could be heard in the distance, twigs repeated to snap.  "Go away, stupid face!"  Just then, something pushed Zane from behind with enough to force him to stumble a bit.  "Kekekekekeke!"  Soon, rocks small rocks were thrown from every direction, pelting both Zane and Alex.

"No one's supposed to be here...leave now!" another voice emanated from the woods, this time it was deeper.

IsOSufc.png

"There's no hiding from these eyes..."

"Pretty impressive pair you got there then..." a mature sounding male voice came from the direction Axel had blasted.  A white figure nonchalantly strolled out of the forest with his hands up...but the strange thing was...you could see through him.  He had no defining features besides a white outline, and cold, dead eyes.  They could see the leaves rustling behind him due to the night breeze.  "Now...if you'd kindly leave, and not disturb us...it would be much appreciated-"

The ghastly figure stopped in his tracks.  Upon looking at the two hedgehogs who sat side by side, his eyes were wide as the Mobian Sea.

"Ax....Ken?...It...It can't be..."

The figure then materialized completely, showing a white hedgehog who looked rather tired.

Being a robot had its disadvantages. You weren't truly organic, nor did you completely emulate them, no matter how advanced your programming was. You couldn't 'feel' the eyes staring at you, or the sinking feeling in your gut that something was wrong. He did see that Axel shot him a look, and that Ken and he were being pelted by rocks.

"Unknown entities attempting to drive us away. Readings inconsistent... probability of being the spirits of the deceased 87.46 percent. Permission to purge?" Chimera asked as he morphed his arm into a blaster, his other arm readying the water cannon as his shoulders lifted up to reveal missiles. Chimera knew there was a afterlife, and ghosts... Hang Castle taught him that much.

"Ax....Ken?...It...It can't be..."  Chimera did his best to identify the hedgehog ghost. It looked close to Silver... but no, it didn't match his database...

"Attempting to identify," Chimera droned. After a few seconds, he called out. "It's no use," He took a step forwards. "Identify yourself at once, or suffer the consequences,"
