Over a hundred years ago, the world ended.

Stories are passed down from generation to generation, telling of how the world came to be as it is now. "A Great Cataclysm," they say. "God, in all his wrath, ravaged the land with tribulation after tribulation until only those he deemed worthy remained." Few remain who know the truth of those dark days, if they still live today. It wasn't long after those days before man began to crawl from its steel shells; seeking whatever life was left for them on this world.

However, they were not alone. The land had changed since they had hid underground. Titans, beings who appear as great and mighty humans capable of strange and mystical powers, had claimed part of the land as their own. Exiles, distorted and changed humans cast away because of their appearance and nature, hid in the great deserts and stole for their survival. And the Mechs; soulless, metallic monsters that crawled from the metal pits of the Old World to carry out a mission long abandoned.

The Humans made a place for themselves in this world; using the tools and pieces of the Old World that they could find to rebuild what they had lost. The Titans who lived under a sovereign banner, did not take lightly to this. They saw the humans as a sin and a blight; using the tools that they claim brought about the end of the world once before. The Titans declared war on the humans; a bloody and ruthless war that saw no end for decades, hoping to save the world from an end they claim will come once more.

Over a hundred years ago, the world had changed. And it will change once more.

Ashes is a multi-genre RP that takes place in a world of my own devising. This RP will be mainly focused on story, with a strong influence by the characters who take part in it. This RP allows for up to 3 main groups of characters to participate, offering different sides and points of view to its story. However, I will be mainly looking for a smaller cast of dedicated players to carry through a plot to its hopeful end. If you are interested, please read the "Background and Factions" tab, and read any of the other aspects to the setting at your own leisure. If this RP interests you, please state so below.

[spoiler= Background and Factions]

The RP takes place on the ruins of the island nation Asgard. Over a hundred years ago, Asgard existed as a small but very prosperous country with a very gifted population in the ways of science and technology. It wasn't until one day, archaeologists stumbled upon ancient ruins buried beneath their island's mountains. In those ruins, they discovered a special crystal that resonates with an ancient power. Using these crystals, that nation made great strides in science and technology. However, it wasn't long until this nation was plunged into a great war before everything was brought to an abrupt end.

Since the Cataclysm, humanity sought to reclaim its position in the world and rebuild the old world to its former glory, using great technologies and tools found in the many deep bunkers scattered throughout the islands. These humans gathered under one flag and renamed themselves the Asgard Rebirth Coalition. However, they weren't alone. A race of seemingly "Super Humans" who became known as Titans had built their own nation on the northern-most island. Calling themselves the Da'at Mechadash, the Titans lived a rustic lifestyle built upon older technologies and techniques more akin to the first century. Da'at Mechadash is lead by a single Titan with a vision of rebuilding the world as a new utopia; cleansed of the sins of its past. This Titan saw the Coalition and its technology as a blight on the world that will bring about another Cataclysm, and did not hesitate in declaring war. Finally, a third race of... creatures, as many call them, exists. Exiles with freakish features who bare similar, yet weaker, powers compared to the Titans stand tossed aside by either nation; forced to fight for their own survival on the most barren islands. These Exiles, thrown aside as impure abominations, the Exiles live as outcasts among the traitors and criminals who have fled either nation, seeking refuge from the war.

In the ruins of Asgard, humans, titans, and exiles alike find their living based upon the ancient crystals found by the Old World; the Affinity Crystals. These Crystals act as cornerstones for the human's technology, and the Titan's power. And with smaller stones accepted as currency (known as "Shards") Affinity Crystals have become a very important aspect of the new world; a world scattered with dangerous creatures and fearsome weapons of the Old World. An Old World whose long forgotten sins begin to bear new consequences...

[spoiler=Plot]

The war between the humans and Titans has been waging for decades, with no end in sight. However, when what looked like a star falling from the sky landed on their islands, the bunkers, scattered and buried, activated; and the technology recovered from their depths began to react. A voice spoke from the heavens of a great and terrible prophecy; one of a great power that may bring another Cataclysm to come. This fallen "Star" is seen as a key to this great power, with both nations vying for it and its contents. However, what neither realize is how the sins of the Old World and what it had discovered soon rise to the surface, bringing with them the possibility of long-awaited peace or great destruction.

As dark secrets are unveiled in the face of a promise of great power, one's true colours begin to show with the future of humanity and the world at great risk. It's up to those few individuals who find themselves at the right place at the wrong time to discover these secrets, and ultimately make the right decision.

[spoiler=Affinity Crystals and Technology]

A major component of this RP are the Affinity Crystals. What can only be described as "Solid Energy", these crystals are created by an ancient magic that runs deep within the roots of the planet known as Arcana. Affinity Crystals replicate the energy they are created with, with stronger crystals being harder to create and far less stable. However, Affinity Crystals only resonate with Arcana. Because of this, humans (who are not Arcane creatures) are unable to use the crystals on their own, but by resonating different crystals with each other are able to generate a weaker level of their power. However, Titans and Exiles, who are Arcane creatures, are able to more fully realize the power of the crystals themselves.

Because of these crystals, technology has leaped far into the future. As such, compact generators, energy weaponry, hover technology, and many other sci-fi wonders have been made possible by the incredible power of the Affinity Crystals. Using this technology, Humans are able to augment themselves to increase their strength and physical ability to points that even come close to rivaling the might of the Titans.

However, because this technology is all mostly powered by Affinity Crystals, Titans are unable to use them. Because of their Arcane nature, Titans are able to resonate with the crystals and unlock a greater power within them. But, the technology that these crystals reside within is only built to handle a much smaller degree of their power. When a Titan uses advanced technology that uses these crystals, the energy they unlock overloads and ultimately destroys these tools. Exiles, while Arcane, do not possess power as strong as Titans, and are able to safely use these technologies at the cost of a shorter shelf-life.

[spoiler=Races]

This RP offers three playable races: Humans, Titans, and Exiles.

Humans are fairly self-explanatory, however Augmentations should be explained. Humans have access to advanced technology, and augmentations can be used to specialize and improve a specific person to their wants and needs. These augmentations may include strength and agility boosts, resistances to different environments, or even temporary tools such as stealth or force-barriers. Humans have access to high-technology gear and augmentations.

Exiles are commonly referred to as "Freaks" or "Mutants", baring unnatural features for a human and even physiques that are seen as freakish. An Exile may bare whatever unique feature its player desires; however these features cannot include extra limbs or non-human limbs such as wings or tails. These features also cannot offer any significant advantage such as night-vision or any super/extra-human abilities. Exiles have access to both augmenations and arcane abilities, but cannot use either to a degree as well as either humans or titans. Exiles have access to everything, but not to as well as either race with their respective gear or abilities.

Titans are super-human, magical beings. Bearing incredible statures that average around 7-9 feet tall and outlandish hair and eye colours, Titans are a sight to behold. Titans are capable of physical feats that outclass Exiles and Humans, but not to an unbelievable degree (think of an average Titan as a very well-trained Olympic athlete, with a stronger Titan being incredibly strong for a human). Titans are also magical beings, capable of using Arcane energies. These energies manifest themselves as single-use spells such as a fire-ball or a teleport, but cannot be used as passive always-on abilities or lingering buffs. Titans are incapable of using Augmentations or advanced technology, but are able to use Arcane Weaponry; swords or other weapons imbued with Affinity Crystals to add additional strengths or abilities.

[spoiler=Locations and Map]

This RP takes place on the Island Nation of Asgard and its 3 main islands. Asgard is an island-nation roughly the size of our real-world United Kingdom.

FpovbdB.png

[spoiler=Legend]

Island of Thor: Claimed territory of the Asgard Rebirth Coalition; Thor is the biggest of the three islands with rolling hills and wide plains. While scattered with many large ruins from the cities of old, Thor holds the biggest space for the most fertile farmlands out of the three islands. Points of interest include the expansive hills and ruins, as well as Varyn Lake; largest lake in the land. Warning: all travelers are cautioned to avoid the quarantined area due to high risk of mutilation and death.

Significant Locations:

A - Varyn County - A well-sized, lake-side town positioned east of the capital. Varyn has been a calm, peaceful town at the edge of the Coalition population. While historically the town has had a strained relationship with the capital, the population there has enjoyed a scenic location often visited by travelers and vacationers alike.

B - Sanctuary - Capital city of the republic, Sanctuary stands as the largest and most fortified of the three settlements on Thor. High-tech and near-impenetrable, the high walls of Sanctuary protect its population. Being granted residence in Sanctuary is often very difficult for most people, due to its limited space (large walls are difficult and costly to expand); however, it may be evident that some people are treated better than others...

C - Upalas - Upalas is the smallest of the three settlements on Thor; known for its agricultural community. Upalas provides food to the entirety of the Republic, and sits at the edge of its territory. Due to its position at the edge of Coalition territory, its small size, and its large agricultural industry; Upalas has been the target of many raids over its history; but despite the bandits, they always manage to produce more than enough for the rest of the republic.

Island of Loki: Loki is the second largest of the islands. Known for the tallest and largest mountain ranges in the country, The Loki Valley is the most arid and possibly inhospitable (except for the Quarantined Zone) land in the country. This island is home to the Outcasts; scattered with many nomadic tribes and camps. Loki is known for many of the largest bunkers in the country, but the people who inhabit the island calmly leave these bunkers alone out of both fear, and reverence. Points of interest include Mt. Vulcan on the northern tip of the island. While these islands are home to a few dormant volcanoes, Vulcan stands as the tallest and oldest.

Significant Location:

D - Last Haven - The only permanent settlement in all of Loki is not of a large size, or in a well-built state. Haven was built at the foot of the Western Range, between two peaks. While The Outcasts have no central leadership of any kind, this village is home to one of the most regarded members of their community. Beyond the range is a large lake that outsiders and insiders alike are forbidden to enter, due to its proximity to large structure from before the cataclysm. Many have gone there to never return...

Island of Odin: Home to Da'at Mechadash; Odin is a lush environment of thick forests and winding rivers. Points of interest include the tall mountains and deep valleys; home of the "Valley of the Fathers"; the biggest forest left out of the three islands, and preserved by the Titans due to both its age, and that it apparently survived the cataclysm hundreds of years before. Only specific members of Da'at Mechadash are granted access into this valley, due to its spiritual and natural significance.

Significant Locations:

E - Safed - At the edge of a large delta is the city of Safed; the only public city in all of Odin. Despite its focus on farming and hunting, Safed's large size is due to the exclusivity of Hebron, and the general avoidance of Tiberias. Because of this, Safed is the only publicly available city for both Titans and some Exiles.

F - Tiberias - Tiberias stands as more of a military establishment than a city. Tiberias is the main prison-location for captive Exiles and Humans, known to be a "hell hole" of a town. The Sovereignty lacked a prison large enough to contain so many prisoners and slaves, and gave them their town; but because of its high walls and heavy military presence, Tiberias is more of a prison than a city. Prisoners are often forced into labor deep with in its mines or within its agricultural sector; of which almost none of the food is granted to them. Captives who are chosen to be sent to Hebron are either being chosen as a slave for a noble, or being sent to their inevitable deaths in the Colosseum.

G - Hebron - Holy city of Da'at Mechadash, Hebron was built at the foot of the largest mountain range on Odin in a small valley. Heavily fortified and very well built, Hebron is home to nobles, generals, high-ranking officials, and the leader of the nation itself. Besides its rich and distinguished community, Hebron also holds the large Colosseum where certain captives and slaves are forced to fight either captured foes or each other for the entertainment of those who attend.

Island of Tyr: While not large of enough to be classified among the three major islands in the country, Tyr is held with significance for its mystery and intrigue. Placed in the center between the three islands, Tyr is a rocky plateau known to be impossible to approach and land on. All that anybody knows about the island are the large, pristine structures observed on its surface from a distance. Any information given about the island in any records preserved in the old bunkers are only references containing only its name, and hint at great importance within the higher-ranks of the Old World.

Non-elemental Arcana is possible; it takes the form of crystalline constructs that can erupt into energy (Affinity Crystals with no base enchantment, basically). A Skill is something your character is good at, something that they really know what to do. This could be hand-to-hand combat, mechanics, hacking, etc.

Characters may not start with high-tech equipment or accessories, or Arcane equipment or accessories. Abilities will be balanced accordingly during the application process. They may be strong, however do not go overboard and keep abilities within reason. If your character does not have particular training or access to anything significant, do not give them skills or abilities outside of what they could normally do.

Remember: Humans cannot use Arcane abilities or weapons, and Titans cannot use Augmentations or high-tech equipment. Exiles can use both ability types, but not to the same degree as either major race. Exiles can also use any weapon/equipment.

So how will it work if everyone is a different race and we don't really have much people for three sides of the story?

The main party will work in an out-of-faction group, so to speak. How people come together as different races in this group depends on their backstories and personalities. The nations themselves are not entirely exclusive to single races; as Da'at Mechadesh has some Exiles living as middle/lower-class citizens and humans as slaves, how the Outcasts are basically people of any race (outlaws and such) but is mostly Exiles; and how the Coalition is mostly humans with Exiles and Titans as middle/lower-class citizens.

If there isn't really many players, the main party is the most important for the story's progression with the other two being optional for if we get enough people.

Very interested, few questions though.

How long can the Exiled or Titans use tech before blowing it up?

Is it possible for Arcane creatures to specialise in certain types, e.g. a pyromancer?

How do the Arcane creatures learn these abilities, or is it instinctive?

Are Exiled and Titans allowed the Coalition's military forces, and are Exiled allow join the Titans' military?

1. Titans cannot use tech at all. Exiled can use tech, but they have a shorter shelf-life (said shelf-life will be negligible in the face of the RP, though)

2. Yes

3. Combination of learning and practicing, and instinctive. Someone isn't so much born with a type of magic, but is able to learn a type of magic. It's not very easy to learn a certain type, however, so nobody can just switch to a different type on the fly unless they really know how to use it.

4. Yes to both, but cultural stigmas will always exist and it will be rare to see either races in any significant ranks outside of their respective militaries.

Also just a note, I will have the OOC fully up at some point today hopefully.

Accepting applications now. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Name: Hanna Van Rosenvelt
Age: 19
Gender: Female

Appearance: Portrait_Image_RP_16.png
Hanna stands at 5'3 and possesses a fit build. She also possesses emerald green eyes and slightly blonde hair. The length of her hair extends all the way to her lower back. She wears a tank top, a short skirt, a pair of earrings and black knee-high boots. She also carries around a small bag to carry around her belongings.
Personality: Seemingly emotionless, Hanna believes in pursuing whatever interests that may benefit her. She does not really care about other people because of this, even if it means putting down someone's life without hesitation. However she is not someone who favours violence or brute force, preferring knowledge utilizing her wits instead. She is also usually quiet unless she has something to say.
Biography: Originally from the Coalition, Hanna was largely neglected by her parents and she had trouble making friends as a child, mostly because of her introverted personality. As such she was often very lonely and she grew used to it over time. This has taught her to stick to her well-being first over that of others and maneuver around when dealing with others to create possible opportunities for her in the long run. Hanna left the Coalition to parts unknown after exiting her teen years, driven by a pursuit for knowledge.

Reserving a space for my dude.

[spoiler=Hyr]

Name: Hyr Johnson

Age: 28

Gender: Male

Race: Exile

[spoiler=Appearance]

Hyr is 5'5" with a deceptively slim frame. Like all exiles, he possess a number of deformities- he was born with his left eye socket empty, one shoulder higher then the other and both his index fingers short and withered. His head is bald and his eyes a watery blue, with a scraggly brown mustache. He wears leather boots, plain cotton pants and fur vest. For combat, he keeps an old leather breastplate and pants.

[spoiler=Personality]

A few things got Hyr through life. Perhaps the biggest two are his own stubbornness and lack of morals. No matter the circumstance, Hyr will do anything and everything to ensure he gets closer to his goals. Torture, theft, murder... All mean little to him. All the same, if he feels that confessing to a crime or reporting the actions of another criminal will bring him closer to his destination, Hyr will do it on the spot. When Hyr feels the need to make friends with someone, he does so in a silent, dogged way. He simply doesn't leave them alone, constantly sticking around them at all possible times and trying to help as much as possible. Despite the effort he goes to to make friends, he doesn't get too attached to someone as he fears he'll have to leave them behind. Hyr is pretty hard to make angry, and doesn't show it visibly if he does become angered. He'll simply wait until the next time he is needed by the person who annoyed him and refuse the help, whether the person simply needs some money or is hanging off a cliff.

[spoiler=Biography]

Born in one of the many camps on Loki, Hyr's life started out typically enough, learning from his parents about affinity crystals, technolgy, how to survive on Loki Island and other things. This all changed when a their group came across a lost human among the wasteland. A former member of the military, the man called Darragh was exiled from Thor for killing a fellow soldier over an argument about how he treated his prisoners. Of course, he never told Hyr and his family that, pretending to be an innocent framed for murder. He and Hyr became fast friends, and he often told Hyr about the wondrous technology of his homeland, proudly showing off his own two mechanical eyes. Hyr was awestruck by these tales and longed to see more of these wonders.

When Hyr was eighteen, four years after Darragh had joined up with their group, his father died of illness and his mother decided to take him to Last Haven for Burial. On the way, they were attacked by Titan warriors who had been shipwrecked on their way to raid Upalas. None but Darragh and Hyr survived, and the Titans fled into the dark. Enraged at the lost of their friends and family, Hyr and Darragh discovered one Titan who had been knocked out over the course of the battle. For the first time in years, Darragh used the skills that had made his prisoners beg for mercy- and Hyr was a most willing apprentice.

From the tortured Titan, they found where the others had made camp and launched a night raid, just the two of them. Many of the Titans had their throats slit, but one awoke before he could be killed and struck Darragh down. Finishing off the lone warrior, Hyr took one of Darragh's artificial eyes, now heavily damaged and left, unsure of where to go.

For six years, Hyr wandered Loki, thieving from other nomads, perfecting what Darragh taught him and occasionally doing good. One time, however, he ended up on the wrong side of a powerful tribe leader, who tried to chase him down. Looking for refuge, and remembering all Darragh said, Hyr stole a boat and began to sail north, for Thor.

Accessory 2: "Work" Gloves

[spoiler= Garoth Bringham]

Name: Garoth Bringham
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Race: Human

Appearance:
Garoth stands at 5 feet, 9 inches with a modest build. Garoth has a handsome, yet almost kiddish face with bright green eyes, and long, auburn hair that's worn in a blown-back style. Garoth's right arm is replaced with a modified synthetic replica. The arm-portion is made to be identical in appearance to his other arm, save the dark-gray color and shine. The hand part of the arm has been modified with a bulkier fist, and made of a tougher metal than the more flexible synthetic "skin". Garoth wears a similar glove on his other hand.
Personality:
Garoth is as kind and generous as he is naive. Having grown up with most of his childhood in Sanctuary, Garoth has a very limited experience dealing with other people outside of some business related situations; and has developed a poor sense of social ques in a lot of areas. Nonetheless, he does genuinely look out for people when he can. Garoth can also be very forward at times, and very blunt. When it comes to sensitive situations, Garoth completely lacks what others may call a "delicate touch". Garoth can also act without thinking things through oftentimes, relying too much on trail-and-error in order to solve problems than to think things through to find the best solution.
Biography:
Garoth's biological parents lived in the Varyn County where his father worked as a fisherman in the lake. When Garoth was only a baby, both his parents died in a boat-accident while out in the water; he himself getting out with only one arm. Search and Rescue were only able to find Garoth in the floating wreackage, and when the news spread to his extended family, he was adopted by his uncle and brought to live behind the walls in Sanctuary. There, Garoth took to his uncle's work and began working as mechanic working to restore broken pieces of equipment recovered from bunkers. In this line of work, he learned skills in both mechanics, and metal-work for creating new parts and pieces. Living with his uncle had been great for Garoth, teaching him to grow up as a man, as well as receiving his new arm and some helpful augmentations. Having grown up behind the walls of Sanctuary, Garoth is mostly oblivious to any tensions that exist between races and factions, other than the very bare-bones basics of what is going on.

[spoiler=Equipment]
Head: Nothing
Armor: Plated Leather Armor
Main Weapon: Reinforced Gloves - Working gloves fixed with metal plates and insulating material for use in a work environment where chance of injury is high. Great for punching.
Sub Weapon: Reinforced Gloves
Alt Weapon: Nothing
Accessory 1: Nothing
Accessory 2: Nothing
Inventory:
  • 75 Shards

[spoiler=Abilities and Skills]
  • Strength Buffer - Tech - As nanites buff and edit Garoth's musculature, his existing muscles are made stronger and more dense to the level of a well-trained athlete.
  • Insulation Shield - Tech - A dermal augmentation that increases Garoth's resistance to harsh temperatures. Protects against burns and frostbite.
  • Sensory Upgrade - Tech - Improves Garoth's senses of sight and hearing slightly. Includes built-in protection against loud sounds and transition contact-lenses for bright lights.
  • Overcharge - Tech - Allows Garoth to "overclock" a 30% boost to a single physical aspects of himself (his strength, for instance) at the cost of physical strain and the rest of his body.
  • Mechanics - Skill - Garoth is skilled in the makings and workings of several common technologies and is comfortable with many designs found in bunkers.
  • Scrapper - Skill - Garoth has some experience in basic hand-to-hand combat techniques.

This sounds quite lovely, any recommendations for my app? (Like a faction that is lacking people, or etc.)

Right now the cast will be limited to a main group unless there's a big influx of apps. The main group will mostly be people not significantly loyal to any faction (to the point of being in a military organization or anything); beyond that your character's ideals/opinions are up to you.

Finished Hyr. May do a second character.

Sounds good! Your character is accepted; my only suggestion being that you could be a little more liberal with the physical description if you would like (things more inhuman are accepted, just so long as extra limbs/wings/tails/etc. aren't included). Right now it's fine, but if there's more you would like to do feel free.

Also, I would like to get a skype group set up sometime soon, so if anyone here who's applied does not have me on Skype be sure to hit me up.
