Dark: Jesus wasn't born on Christmas. The date was chosen during the Christianization because it was already widely used for celebration. It's a Pagan holiday for worshipping the sun god.

So basically, they took that date to get more followers and make it easier for Pagans to convert.

 

Christianity =/= automatically Catholicism, btw.;)

Catholicism is a sub-category of Christianity but there are many other groups too.

 

And not believing into something doesn't leave you out of gaining knowledge about something.

First of all, you clearly didn't even read my post, or if you did, you most certainly didn't comprehend me. I specifically said that you DO NOT have my respect in regards to your religious beliefs, but also that this circumstance is unavoidable due to the ridiculous nature of religion AS VIEWED FROM THE OUTSIDE. That's it. No harm done. I still respect you as a human being, you may very well be a smart/caring person, we can still be friends, etc. etc.

 

I don't know what that last sentence about preaching but not understanding had to do with anything.

I do not hold your religious beliefs in esteem. I find little or no sense of worth or excellence in them. I do not respect your religious beliefs.

 

What you're confusing with respect is another concept: toleration. I fully tolerate and accept your beliefs. Respect comes into this because I respect your right as an individual to not be ridiculed (for ridicule's sake itself, rather than an actual attempt at 'conversion', so to speak) or discriminated against because of your beliefs.

 

How can I respect you as a person without respecting your religious beliefs? Your religious beliefs, though perhaps very formative of many aspects of your life, are in themselves only one aspect of your life. I can appreciate your qualities, some or many of which might even be a result of your religious beliefs (generosity, etc.), without having to appreciate your beliefs in themselves.

 

And of course, your mere status as a human being is a rather big deal. You are an example of the most advanced species nature/God/etc. has managed to produce on this planet. I think that's pretty important.

 

Also, I need to draw the distinction between an athiest communicating with theists and a theist communicating with athiests. Religion is, in and of itself, inherently illogical. You have to make a leap of faith. Athiests are those who do not make this leap. As a theist, you can relate to us through perhaps any sense of uncertainty you have had in the past, etc. You can respect us for our logic, while still believing that you are quite correct and that we should make that leap. I, an athiest, think you're nuts.

 

To put it metaphorically, lack of belief is a cliff. You jump off the cliff. That's religion. From your perspective, you have flown up into the air and now reside on a cloud. You think I should jump off the cliff too. You were where I was. You know where I stand. From my perspective, you just committed suicide.

And you're completely wrong about athiests not having websites. (Athiestamerica, firstchurchofathiestforums, etc.) Admittedly there are far fewer, and to be honest I don't know what they could possibly have to talk about. ;)
