I feel like discussing an old rule the TCG and OCG had.

Wasn't there some reason a maximum was set? Or was it just to stop people from trying to build card towers?

I only heard of one time this caused a problem. Somebody made an 80 card deck but only played with 40. After he got deck checked and received the game 1 lost he was able to complete his deck however he wanted from those 80 cards and continue playing. Imagine going 6 rounds knowing what all the top players were running and basically allowed to modify your deck at the cost of game 1.

That and it would probably take forever to check 50 noobs decks at 96 cards.

@nate:

if they implemented a minimum 50 card deck? why?

Larger decks in games with larger hand limits = ok. But not in my 6 card max UGO's!

That makes sense' date=' but MtG has 7 as its limit with 60+ size decks. The difference is almost unnoticeable.

(although PKMN's hand size limit of [b']58[/b] sorta helps your point)

i dont see hand difference as being a problem. the reason pokemon gets away with 60 is that you can draw and search a lot. like, a LOT. so maybe with 50-60 card decks, it would be legal to run things like a pot of greed at 1, or something similar perhaps.

It's honestly a huge hassle to duel against. I once dueled a guy who had a deck about (no exaggeration here) 2 feet high. Shuffling his deck before the duel started was the worst thing ever. Then' date=' on his turn (since he won the dice roll) he activated RoTA. I was really damn mad after he got the card he wanted and I spent about two minutes shuffling the pile of cards. It was only when I finished shuffling that I realized the card he searched for was Elemental Hero Stratos, and I'd have to do it again. To top it off, he ditched Malicious with Grepher and sent something to drop off Necro Gardna.

So like, 10 minutes into the duel, and it was still this guy's first turn.

Maybe I don't quite understand the rules behind deck checking, but that strategy doesn't seem sound. They'd make an 80 card deck, present the 80 card deck at the registration or w/e, and then when they went into the duel they'd only go in with 40 or something? Wouldn't being deck checked auto-put-him-back at 80? And if he entered with 40, why wouldn't he just get deck checked twice in a row? Maybe a combination with the way you're phrasing it or the way the rule works or something... but it seems that strategy could easily be patched up.
